Matt1: Happy New Year!

Rush: TYSM!

Matt1: Hope it has started on the right foot!

Rush: How was your first week of the year?

Rush: Yes…so far so good!

Matt1: Starting a “new”

Rush: That’s good.

Matt1: First full week

Matt1: Tourists have cleared out quite a bit

Rush: Yes..back to our routines…

Rush: It’s always fun to start our our New Chan Year.

Matt1: I love our Chan January’s

Rush: Tonight’s movie is our official start, and it seems like such a short time ago that we last watched it!

Rush: Me too!

Matt1: I know….this past year flew by

Rush: It sure did!

Rush: We had a nice warm day in my area today..felt nice.

Rush: it gets cold at night begause the air is dry here.

Rush: low humidity.

Matt1: We’re in a cold snap here

Matt1: Barley made it to 60 with lows in the 40’s

Rush: When one thinks of Florida, it is not often thought of as cold!

Matt1: Went for a bike ride Sunday, 20+ mph winds and 51…..froze my butt off

Rush: Yes. We can get pretty low, too.

Rush: I can imagine!

Matt1: Here in St. Pete, that’s cold, but by Friday we’ll be vack to 80’s

Rush: Going against the wind made the winds over 40 mph.

Rush: Now THAT is Florida!

Rush: 80s in winter.

Matt1: Tail winds are real fun, head winds are challenging.….cross winds are scary, lol

Matt1: Low humidity in winterm but winds kick up…..Tornadoe touched down in Deland on Sunday…..not too far from Hounder

Rush: When I was a kid, I would ride my bike up to my friend’s house. During santanna winse…and they gust at 40-50 mph, it was really tough going! But, going home was FUN!

Rush: The air, because I was going with the wind, felt still around me!

Matt1: lol, I bet

Rush: Funny feeling.

Matt1: We’ve gone out in between rain during tropical storms….wild ride

Rush: AND, it was mostly down hill!

hounder has joined this room

Matt1: Down hill with tail wind? Perfect!

Rush: WOW! THAT would be an ADVENTURE at times!

Matt1: Hello Hounder!

Rush: Hello, Hounder!

Rush: That’s the one we are watching.

Cdirus: Got it. Thanks

Rush: Back in the day of “scoops.”

Rush: Matt, on the first Monday of February, I will be out of town. could you possibly take over that evening?

hounder: and news was news not opinions

Matt1: Please remind me, but I think I’m in town, but not 100%

Rush: Yes, Hounder.

Rush: They blew up the car…

Rush: TYSM, Hounder!

Rush: It’s an adventure.

hounder: good thought matt. rush may need to make sure he can stay with us before he signs. 🙂

Rush: Our friend, Cy Kendall!

Rush: We see him in “The Chinese Cat.”

Rush: At, the man driving who works for the hornet looks like Lt. Macy in “CC at the Circus.”

Rush: The man with the Irish accent.

Rush: This is the origin of the Green Hornet.

Rush: “Better than 200”!!!

Rush: The gas gun.

Rush: Does anyone recall newspaper hawkers who would shout out the headlines?

Rush: I do from my early childhood.

hounder: sorry no rush. but i do remember milk delivered to the house

Rush: That counts, Hounder!

Rush: )

Nothere has joined this room

Rush: NT!

marcycloud: me too, at my grandmas.

hounder: hi nt. happy nw year

Rush: TYSM, NT!

Nothere: It’s the roaring 2o’s again.

hounder: the car makes the hornet sound

Rush: Yes.

Rush: This must be the Tunnel of Terror…

Nothere: Back when Kato was just the driver. Cours you hire Bruce Lee to play a part. It automatically becomes the lead her.

Nothere: hero even.

Cdirus: boom!

Rush: Chapter Two: “Can Hornet’s Swim?”

Matt1: Great start of series

Rush: Yes!

Rush: (Delayed Applause…)

hounder: ummmm shouldn’t there have been a door on the airlock?

Matt1: <clap-clap?

Rush: This was a good series, it seems, from the good start we just watched!

Rush: There was a door…I thought!

Matt1: Always love the 1st ever episodes

Nothere: <Yeaah>

Rush: It will be interesting to see how they escape.

Rush: Yes, matt!

Rush: Now…5 1/2 minutes till showtime!

Nothere: Or will they. Spolers The Green Hornet is rather explosion proof:)

Rush: “Behind That Curtain”

Matt1: Cued!

hounder: i like that the serials had to have lots of cliffhangers

Dona has joined this room

Rush: It is side two to the “Monte Carlo” disc.

Dona: Hello everyone!

marcycloud: cued here too…

Godwinshelley2 has joined this room

Rush: Side Two of the “CC in Monte Carlo” disc.

Rush: GS!

Matt1: Hello GS!

Godwinshelley2: I’m cued – no 20th Century start

Rush: WELCOME…Happy New Year!

Nothere: Well Hounder depending on how many episodes 11 to 14 cliffhangers.

Rush: 3 1/2 minutes…

hounder: hi gs. happy new year

Nothere: Happy New Godwin Year.

Rush: 3 minutes to go…

Nothere: <GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES>

Rush: (Starting…)

Dona: Hi GS

Godwinshelley2: Hi everyone

Rush: TWO MINUTES….

Godwinshelley2: Mondays are busy

Rush: Pause at the title…

Rush: Yes, GS!

Nothere: Mondays are hated by Garfield.

Rush: I hear you, there!

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Rush: 90 seconds to go…

Godwinshelley2: Not into the swing yet after the holidays

Rush: Check that…

Rush: 60 seconds…

Rush: On track…

hounder: mondays are hated by lots of folks.

Rush: Sorry…

Rush: 50 seconds…

Rush: 40 seconds…

hounder: rush, are ou going to teach in iowa?

Rush: 30 seconds…

Rush: I hope to, yes.

Rush: 25…

Rush: 20…

Rush: 15…

Rush: 10…

Rush: 5…

Rush: GO!!!

Matt1<GONG>

Rush: Organ music…

Godwinshelley2: Bad theater organ music

Rush: Harkening to the silent films…

Nothere: Gilbert Emory is here. We are in for uhm not sure:)

Rush: “London”

Rush: 10:30 a.m.

Godwinshelley2: Unlike last week’s film with almost no establishing shots – this one is FILLED with them

Rush: Exaggerated acting…

Rush: Yes, GS!

Godwinshelley2: It still moves better than the Lugosi Dracula – the pacing seems to drag worse with that one.

Nothere: We can’t be in London. Charlie Chan in London isn’t for years yet. I know shut up Bunny.

Rush: That’s right, GS.

Rush: It does get slow at times.

Matt1: Col Beeeeeeetham

Rush: NT: 🙂

Rush: Matt: 🙂

Rush: That guy needs a sock on the jaw…

Godwinshelley2: With the slow lingering shots – I can really see the fabrics of the clothing and furniture

Rush: A pub from the era…

Rush: “Hansom” cabs.

Rush: They abound in the Holmes tales.

Rush: A “friend” of ours fro two other Cc films…

Godwinshelley2: I guess I still don’t understand the significance of changing the shoes – and I’ve only seen this film over a dozen times

Rush: YES!

Godwinshelley2: This print is so clear I do enjoy the textures of things

Nothere: Arrest that man immediately. Smoking near a building.

Rush: I think he’s trying to frame Col. Beetham with those slippers.

Rush: Yes, NT!

Rush: Are you with us, MC?

Godwinshelley2: Ah thank you Rush

Rush: You are welcome….

Godwinshelley2: So this film was Pre-Market Crash.

Rush: Yes.

Godwinshelley2: Things were still looking good as far as money

Rush: That happened at the end of 1929.

Rush: Our “word of the week” was “Bob.”

Rush: As in her hair style.

Nothere: So who is gonna tell em. Or should we let the crash come as a surprise?

Rush: A trend of that time going back to about 1920.

Godwinshelley2: I don’t really see the attraction for that woman. But then I don’t understand Sam Spade’s attraction to Bridget in the Maltese Falcon.

Rush: Aw..let them ejoy themselves, NT!

Nothere: She’ a flapper God. Just look at that haircut.

Rush: Agreed, NT.

hounder: you owe himmore than that girl

Godwinshelley2: The Blondie comic strip started with Blondie being a gold-digging flapper.

Rush: I mean…GS.

Rush: About the Sam Spade angle.

Nothere: And Dag’s rich family didn’t like her.

Rush: I watched “The Big Sleep” yesterday, speaking of Bogart.

Rush: One of my favorites.

Godwinshelley2: The bookstore scene is so wonderful

Rush: Yes!

Rush: BOTH bookstore scenes.

Nothere: That’s the ine with him acting odd in the bookastore.

Rush: Note the shadow.

Rush: On the front of the couch.

Rush: Sound boom, I think.

Godwinshelley2: Yes – it reminds me of the scene in Bladerunner at the theater where Harrison Ford pretends to be a “safety inspector” to talk to the snake lady. The same kind of humor in his act

Rush: AH!

Nothere: I would have to agree Rush.

Rush: I saw it move earlier.

Rush: She won’t even look at him!

Nothere: Course the two on the floor to the right are the couch legs, and those are prtty long.

Godwinshelley2: See all the textures on the wall paper and the chair

Rush: I think he gets the “message.”

Rush: “You’ve been a BOUNDER, sir!”

Godwinshelley2: Oh no – they ALMOST had some action – but first – sit down and wait

Rush: It’s going to be a looonnng wait.

Rush: Note the slipper in his hand.

Cdirus: looking for cinderella?

marcycloud: lol

Rush: Sort of…

Godwinshelley2: This would be a terrible radio production at this pace

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Nothere: “Bounder? My dear Rush, I am at the very least a Cad. Next you’ll be daming me with faint praise and calling me a Scoundrel.”

hounder: can he say anything but no sir?

Rush: Yes, mam.

Dona: LOL

Nothere: <Tincan>

Matt1: <tin can>

Godwinshelley2: Tonight’s action packed thriller is brought to you by Valium

Rush: TYSM, NT and Matt…

Rush: Cue heart attack…

Nothere: Quick everyone stare across the room at each other dramatically.

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Dona: This is the one with that horrible some that the maid sings

Godwinshelley2: this would have been a much different film if they sailed to Indiana

Godwinshelley2: Yes Dona

Rush: Yes, GS!

hounder: yup dona

Rush: Yes, Dona…coming up….

Rush: Stylich hat of the era.

Godwinshelley2: UGH – not that is about the worst hat in the whole series

Dona: not a great hat

Rush: (stylish)

hounder: did you really think sir george would change his mind and welsome the bounder with open arms?

Rush: Odd-looking today, yes.

Cdirus: definately the ugliest!

Godwinshelley2: That guy cleans up good

Rush: AH! Our watchman has moved up…

Matt1: snazzy

Cdirus: Was the guy (not the bobby) in another Chan film?

Rush: He was whistling that pub song we heard earlier.

Godwinshelley2: Did he share the cigar because he got the Sir Frederick Bruce name of the cop in charge

Dona: He was in London

Dona: the horse guy

Cdirus: The groom?

Dona: yes

Rush: I think he was trying to make the cop think highly of him.

Rush: Bobby, I should say…

Dona: at least that is what I recall

Cdirus: Thought so

Rush: Sir Frederick is the one who comes up with the sayings that were probably meant for Chan.

Godwinshelley2: Maybe you shouldn’t keep a smoking cigar next to a flammable slipper that is evidence

Rush: Spin the globe…

Cdirus: You could run this at 2x speed and still understand it

Rush: Transition to India…

Godwinshelley2: Product placement for the globe company

Rush: Yes, CD!

hounder: walk softly go far.

Rush: Here comes that serenade…

Nothere: Quick interrogate that elephant. He’ll rember a lot.

Cdirus: Hit the mute button dona!

hounder: this must have been filmed near the transition to talkies. everyone is ennounciating very clearly.

Nothere: Rita Heyworth you aren’t lady.

Cdirus: Is this the puka puka song? or whatever it was?

Rush: He won’t.

Godwinshelley2: pundi pundi

Rush: Coming up….

Dona: i did

Rush: Who REALLY runs that house?

Nothere: Donna knows what shes doing.

Rush: And, his wife would allow her husband to have that woman as a servant?

hounder: ouki pundi. annoying

Nothere: Dude stare, kiss her, or drink. We got a movie to get too.

Rush: Talk about turning a blind eye…

Rush: “Thank you so much.”

Godwinshelley2: Theres Karloff

Rush: Karloff.

Rush: Yes.

Godwinshelley2: He looks quite dapper in the turban

Rush: Yes.

Nothere: Tea? It’s 4 o clock alreay.

Rush: Tea time.

Nothere: So John is the murderer.

Rush: The only thing John is killing is TIME…

Godwinshelley2: caravasary

Godwinshelley2: that is a word I never knew before

Rush: Tonight we start our 21st year.

Rush: More than 1,000 chats have come and gone…

Godwinshelley2: Congratulations

Rush: Here’s your song….

Dona: were movies of this time slow moving like this?

Rush: To ALL of us…

Godwinshelley2: My husband started screaming when the singing started

Cdirus: yea for Rush (not the song)

Godwinshelley2: He has calmed down now

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Rush: Turn up the sound, GS!

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Nothere: Happy Caravasary. The traditional gift is a caravan. I’ll contact the Bedouins. But don’t expect anything big.

Rush: I agree with her.

Rush: hands over my ears, too.

Matt1: Yep

hounder: that would be a hard song to learn to sing

Matt1: Painful

Rush: NT: 🙂

Godwinshelley2: Again she must have some hidden charms – Eve just leaves me cold

Rush: She though her day was bad…

Nothere: Maybe she’s rich?

Rush: That letter just SEALED it!!!

Rush: Nice hiding job.

Dona: yay she is leaving

Rush: Asleep holding his glass.

Rush: Yes, Dona…blessed silence.

Rush: before the coming spat.

Rush: BUSTED!

hounder: the scales have fallen from her eyes

Rush: Finally!

Rush: She should run to the nearest police.

Rush: The old: “I did it for YOU.”

Nothere: O.k. guys silent era is over. Lets see some non over the top reactions.

Godwinshelley2: Well she killed her uncle when she secretly wed – not like she is trying to protect him from the information

Rush: Right.

Rush: I think that this goes far beyond “for better of worse.”

Matt1: and then some

Rush: “Cheapened”?

Rush: He was involved in MURDER!

Rush: We are beyond the “chepened” stage!

Godwinshelley2: Did anyone see the opinion piece in the WSJ in December that mentioned Charlie Chan? https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.wsj.com%2Fspeakeasy%2F2011%2F12%2F19%2Fif-sherlock-holmes-can-come-back-why-not-charlie-chan%2F%3Fmod%3DWSJBlog%26fbclid%3DIwAR1pkAdIdCDL2CuvagXkHNDhPh80Bcw7MjdjxGzi5QcoViXkWFsrJSq6yNs&h=AT3QPvjh1c7iMx_S9AYdSC5Jsg-HV_s-8RHDPEcX4e1eb1y2-JvicDDpt_VYNXbNBBeo9fs2SCAx7NjoixPMJBdlFd3ZMfUSYSrR_WYC_tL68009ZT9J5kQpY4O8wMGp_cCBxiFxJy7qkJZZHvS_VGVlM2qay9LH3h1zEny_JP42YN1PfQ

Nothere: Well what can I tell you Rush nobody’ perfect. Some people leave the top off the toothpaste. Some ae involved in murder.

Godwinshelley2: I need to find a better link

hounder: break that door down and i’ll crown you with a cast iron skillet

Rush: “Well, yes, I said that, but….”

Nothere: Nope God I didn’t see that.

Godwinshelley2: Can’t seem to get it to copy

hounder: didn’t see it

Godwinshelley2https://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/12/19/if-sherlock-holmes-can-come-back-why-not-charlie-chan/

Godwinshelley2: There that is

Nothere: Fine ‘ll take you to the desert. Just stop whining at me.

Rush: Nice, GS!

Rush: YSM.

Godwinshelley2: Nice to see Chan is still mentioned and NOT by us.

hounder: got to go. will e back if i can

Rush: I’ll save it for later.

Nothere: Thanks Gs

Godwinshelley2: By Hounder

Nothere: Bye Hounder

Rush: okay, Hounder!

marcycloud: Thanks GS, Ill read later!

Dona: bye hounder

Rush: Come back if you can…long movie tonight.

Matt1: Take care, Hounder

Nothere: So Donna how’s this singing?

Rush: I would like to know where these scenes were shot.

Rush: I would guess in the Mojave Desert east of L.A.

Godwinshelley2: IMDB says Death Valley and Furnace Creek

marcycloud: thats what i thought. not far from me…

Rush: AH! Thank you, GS!

Godwinshelley2: I was checking IMDB to see if it mentioned anything about the “music”

Rush: I should know that you can find just about anything!

Godwinshelley2: well the internet does make things simpler (and more complicated at the same time)

Rush: The letter…

Rush: Yes, that’s true, GS!

Nothere: What do you mean God? My tech addiction is under control. I only tweet 14 hours a day.

Rush: So, that would be the Mojave Desert.

Rush: Near Death Valley.

Rush: He’s got the “shakes.”

Rush: Noted.

Rush: Cue the singing…

Rush: Right on time to REALLY rattle him.

Dona: AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Rush: (Camel sounds)

Nothere: <Wolf howls>

Nothere: <cat>

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Rush: This film was made 90 YEARS AGO…

Rush: Looks like Eve’s Hair has been cut a bit more…

Dona: WOW

Rush: 1929

Matt1: Amazing

Rush: nearly 91…as the movie was shot sometime during that year.

Nothere: Well folks this is where I leave you. So if you find a man Behind That Curtain. It’s not me. Because I’m Nothere.

Rush: Okay, NT…

Rush: Take care…see you next week!

Matt1: Take care, NT

Rush: Our film will be: “Eran Trece.”

Rush: Thank you for being here tonight.

Godwinshelley2: Night NT

Nothere has left this room

Rush: Coleman lantern in the background.

Rush: Watch the horses scatter during the coming flyover…

Rush: I just realized that this film was made only two years after Lindbergh’s famous flight to Paris from new York.

Rush: She would not have listened to her heart back then.

Rush: Also, she was already married by then!

Godwinshelley2: That explains the “flyer’s hat” look of her earlier chapeau

Rush: Well…they TRIED to scatter…!

Godwinshelley2: Good thing they had the horses tied up

Rush: Yes!

Godwinshelley2: Trust in Allah – AND tie up your horse.

Rush: maybe they learned after the FIRST shooting of that scene!

Cdirus: Had to pay the wrangler overtime?

Godwinshelley2: I didn’t realize that Pith Helmets were lined in Cork – that could hold water and slowly evaporate to keep the head cool

Godwinshelley2: One current review of this film says “The movie giveth little, taketh away 91 minutes from life.”

Rush: Interesting, GS.

Dona: lol

marcycloud: lol

Rush: GS: 🙂

Rush: “I order obeyment.”

Rush: Nice Karloff moments.

Godwinshelley2: yes

Rush: Two years before “Frankenstein.”

Rush: Use sign language.

Godwinshelley2: He does do an excellent job with that bit of silent acting

Dona: he looks so young

Rush: Yes.

Godwinshelley2: I think he was in his 30s

Rush: That would seem right, GS.

Rush: The Inspector knows what’s going on.

Dona: yes he seems to

Godwinshelley2: Whoops I guess he was 42

Rush: That would not be a good idea…riding off alone.

Godwinshelley2https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/funny-review-headline-for-a-1929-clunker-talkie-called-behind-that-curtain.209690/?fbclid=IwAR3XtoegyuuKadPgzIY27KHM8ur-MLhBuis5a8pazxq64zTvOIsucbU80tw

Godwinshelley2: Nice link to the review of this film. VERY INTERESTING discussion and comments about the transition to sound – so read the comments

Rush: Thank you, again, GS!

Rush: More for later…

Dona: Thank you GS

Godwinshelley2: It would be interesting to see films back then that were done both silent and talking.

Rush: These scenes come off as very “authentic.”

Rush: Call to prayer across the way…

Rush: Before the advent of loud speakers.

Rush: “San Francisco.”

hounder: I’m back. the launch was way ciool!!

Dona: Moving all around the globe

Rush: Yes?

Godwinshelley2: Nice shots

Rush: I am sort of jealous, Hounder!

Rush: Actually shot aboard a ferry.

hounder: easy to see the big orange spot. the tail got longer as it got higher, then it winked out.

Godwinshelley2: Is that the Embarcadero

Rush: NICE, Hounder.

Dona: I forgot that was tonight. Not that I could see it tonight

Dona: from here

Rush: We see an occasional launch fro Vandenberg AFB in northern CA.

Godwinshelley2: We get weird aircraft from Dover Air Base near us some times.

Rush: HM.

Rush: Her “customers” are waiting…

hounder: lol. you’re jealous of me, and i’m jealous of my step son. he actually got to see an apollo launch from the cape.

Godwinshelley2: Even if he committed a crime. IF he isn’t in England, could they pull him back?

Rush: WOW, Hounder!

Rush: Historic!

Rush: Probably, GS, through extradition.

hounder: depends on whether there was an extradition order. but wasn’t india somehow a british ruled place at the time?

Dona: Yes i would believe anything he promised

Godwinshelley2: in the 20s in the US – you could just cross into another state

Rush: Yes.

Rush: Nice running scene.

Godwinshelley2: Seems like he could find lots of places that wouldn’t send him back – maybe France

Rush: Location shots.

hounder: his dad was working at the control room in huntsville al. for a nasa contractor

Dona: runs pretty good in those heels

Godwinshelley2: Wow Hounder

Rush: Charlie Chan…

Godwinshelley2: Chan

Matt1: The original

Rush: E.L. park.

Rush: The father of Bo Ling, who appears as the Chans’ Number One Daughter in “The Black camel,” and as Lee’s telephone girlfriend in “CC in Shanghai.”

Dona: Rush was this the very first CC movie made?

hounder: lol. i know chuck worked for bendix but took me 20 years to find out he worked on the guidance system and was one of the on site trouble shooters for electrical systems during launches.

Matt1: Interesting

Godwinshelley2: There was at least one silent film – lost

Rush: Took a nickle in those days.

Dona: what is that book she is looking at. i haven’t seen a book like that in 20 years

Dona: LOL

hounder: time check?

Rush: GS, I know you have been at this corner!

Dona: Thanks GS

Rush: So have I.

Rush: Sir Frederick with Charlie Chan.

Rush: We see why Warner Oland was eventually chosen to play Charlie Chan.

Rush: 1:19:20

Rush: “Hotsey-Totsey, Mr. Chan!”

Rush: Mr. Park looked the part, but his acting was not what Oland could offer!

hounder: and you don’t thinkthe meeting of fear and love will be ummmm volitile?

Rush: “Fear and love make their own destiny.”

Rush: The big show…

Rush: Yes, Hounder!

Rush: VERY much so!

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Rush: Karloff’s spoken lines.

Rush: “The desert gives, and the desert takes away…”

Rush: This is similar to the scenes in the Keye Luke Mr. Wong movie.

Rush: He waxes sentimental…

Rush: See who’s in the background?

Rush: Another Chan actor.

Rush: Later played Dr. Cream.

Godwinshelley2: That’s what I get for being distracted for a moment – who was it Rush

Rush: Eric has the nervous twitch…

Rush: Cue audience booing…

Rush: And cat-calls…

Cdirus: play some good chase music

Godwinshelley2: That’s the most action in the whole film – and the shooting is almost too hard to see

Rush: Charlie Chan took care of business…

Rush: Yes, GS!…and CD!

Rush: See now why the slippers came into play, GS?

Godwinshelley2: I see – but it was a LONG TIME coming to that

Rush: YES!

Rush: About 80 minutes!

Rush: Next week: “Eran Trece.”

Rush: Cue the can…

Matt1: <tin can>

Rush: TYSM, Matt…

Godwinshelley2: The journey is over

Rush: “…and the journey is over…”
