A humble “thank you so much” to all of our members and guests for your patience, and now, please enjoy…

A sincere Thank You!

P.S. Thanks for the pictures you sent me. They were wonderful and it makes me very, very happy for you and Mrs. Glick!
Re: Re: Our new Message Board format Name: Rush Glick Date Posted: Apr 23, 04 – 11:01 AM Email: email@example.com
Thank you, everyone, for the kind words!
About two months ago, something started to go wrong with our old Message Board, as well as the Monthly Poll, both hosted by Freewebware. First, whenever quotation marks were used, slashes (///) appeared in their place in the posted text. Then, I found that it was not possible any longer to edit or delete posts. Fortunately, we received nothing offensive during that time, but, some of you may have noted a person who placed a “learn-about-your-family-tree” message on our board.
A couple of days ago, Virginia mentioned a problem she was having with our humble Board. Yours Truly tested it, and all seemed no worse than before. However, yesterday, when trying to access “same” the result was an error message. This happened throughout the entire day, so, last evening I decided that enough was enough, and, I suppose that this is further proof of the adage of one getting what one pays (or doesn’t pay) for!
Bravenet seems to be a reliable host for our new Board, and, for a modest yearly fee, it is my hope that they will continue to be so. The main concern is that we continue to have our “quiet forum” available to both ourselves and our guests.
Again, thank you, everyone (and, thank you, Gary for the kind added thoughts)…

“Top Ten, No, Make That Seven, Reasons I Like Rush’s New Message Board”:
7. If Rush likes it, I like it. He’s the guy who makes it happen.
6. Old board; needed new coat paint.
5. Picture is fun, makes it impossible to forget which board you’re on.
4. Old board; too many splinters.
3. Former format too hard to read because of composition. New board cleaner layout.
2. Old board; a knothole right by urinals in men’s room.
And the Number One reason I Like the New Board:
1. New board works MUCH QUICKER!
Our Monday evening Chat/Film Viewing: “THE CHINESE RING” Name: Rush Glick Date Posted: Apr 25, 04 – 10:56 PM Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Our movie for our Monday chat/film viewing is “THE CHINESE RING,” starring Roland Winters in his first appearance as Charlie Chan, a role he was given following the passing of Sidney Toler. If I may, I would like to admit that I feel this film to be a very delightful entry in both the Monogram Chans and the Charlie Chan seies proper. Given the chance, this picture offers a number of memorable moments.
We begin, as per our custom, with arrivals and greetings, at 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Thirty minutes later (8:30), we begin rolling our personal copies of “THE CHINESE RING” (VHS or DVD), and, in this way, we are able to view this film TOGETHER.
If you do not have a copy of tonights movie, please join us anyway, as you WILL be included in our ongoing discussion which always meanders in and out of our movie as our evening together progresses!
Our Chat Room is located RIGHT HERE at our Charlie Chan Family Home (the House on Punchbowl Hill! Please use any of the “Chat Room” links to enter.
Hopefully, we will see you this evening for another night of fun discussion…

DVD’s available from where? Name: John Smyth Date Posted: Apr 27, 04 – 12:24 PM Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Does anyone know of a website where I can purchase the complete collection of Charlie Chan Movies on DVD?
I’m sure these would be transfers, but I’m looking for decent quality ones. Any help would be appreciated
Re: DVD’s available from where? Name: Rush Glick Date Posted: Apr 27, 04 – 4:38 PM Email: email@example.com
If you take a look at our “Charlie Chan Links” at this site, and then scroll down that page to “Charlie Chan Movies,” you will find a number of sources who would have Chan on DVD. The best deal that I have foiund thus far comes courtesy of Old Time Radio U.K. (http://oldtimeradiouk.playntradeonline.com) where you can purchase the ENTIRE Charlie Chan series (minus the “lost” films, of course, but “Eran Trece,” the Spanish language version of the lost “Charlie Chan carries On” and the pre-series “Behind That Curtain” are included) for only $140! This comes to just $3.33 per movie, and the postage – from England – is FREE! There are 42 films compiled three to a disk on 14 disks.
I have found the quality to be very good, overall, easily matching, at least, and in a number of cases, surpassing the quality of Charlie chan movies that I have purchased from other dealers. There have been a couple of flaws, including the darkness of “Shadows Over Chinatown” and a couple of instances of audio difficulties, but these I discount due to the very reasonable price of the set.
I hope that this has been of some help to you, john. if you have any questions regarding what I have said, I will be very happy to answer as best I can. We are not trying to promote an particular seller or sellers here a the Charlie Chan family Home. Rather, out goal is to allow as many persons as possible the opportunity to collect, and thus watch, Charlie chan movies at reasonable prices.

Hi Rush and Aunti Ling,
Thanks so much for the information about OldTimeradio. I ordered a CC set from them last night. I am thrilled and looking so forward to watching CC. It’s been a long time waiting for Rob. I have given up since he stopped his 5.00 Website and one can’t e-mail him or get in touch. From the Mystery Board came information that he was still selling movies in February. Ebay has taken him off the site. I don’t know if Rob is giving up and just walking away or whether he will honor many of us out there still waiting. It’s such a mess. Thanks for the information regarding Charlie. I have waited 30 years for these movies. YES, to the CCMB!! Fondly, Karen V.
Re: DVD’s available from where? Name: Aunt Ling aka Kelly Hecht Date Posted: Apr 28, 04 – 11:46 AM Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Message: You can order the whole set from Doug Palmer at
torysmysterymovies.com. He will e-mail you information regarding all of the films that he has…and he has alot. Doug has all Chans..good quality too. I have ordered from Doug recently. The films came quickly and were very good copies.
I can tell you WHO NOT TO ORDER FROM. Rob Metz at Golden Age Video. He advertises as the best deal on the web…but he does not send the films out. So he’s got your $$$$ and you have nothing. Some folks, including myself, have been waiting 8+ months for their films.
Good luck, Aunt Ling
Our Chat/Film Viewing for tonight: “Dark Alibi” Name: Rush Glick Date Posted: May 3, 04 – 10:44 AM Email: email@example.com
Our movie for tonight’s Monday evening Chat/Group Viewing is “DARK ALIBI,” starring Sidney Toler. This is, perhaps, one of the better Monogram Chans, and it should provide a full evening of fun viewing and conversation!
We begin at 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time with our arrivals and greetings. At 8:30 (precisely!) we begin rolling our personal copies (DVD or VHS) of “DARK ALIBI,” thus alloiwing us to watch this fine film TOGETHER. If you do not have this movie available, please join us anyway, as there is always MUCH to discuss off-screen, as well, and EVERYONE will be included in our ongoing dialog!
Our Chat Room is located right here at our Charlie Chan Family Home. Please use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us.
Trivia: “DARK ALIBI” contains several similar “details” with other Chan films from the series. Can you detect these?
Until this evening, please take care and have a wonderful day.

This is one of my favorite movies. My favorite scenes are between Birmingham and Ben. I’ve always loved those routines and I believe this movie holds the best of them! Sorry I wasn’t able to attend. Hopefully sometime soon!

Everyone enjoyed the banter between Birmingham and Ben Carter during last night’s chat/viewing. Especially fun was Charlie Chan’s joining in with the two at the end of the film!
Best Wishes to Rush, Etc. Name: Virginia Johnson Date Posted: May 6, 04 – 6:36 AM Email: email@example.com
You know how many of us will be sending our thoughts and hearts with you and Marie until you bring “our” # 1 Chan child home safe and sound!
And if the last time was any indication, the next two Monday nights will go great guns–because that’s the kind of crowd that you’ve drawn to the chat room, Rush!
I hope I can live up to Rush’s expectations but you all make up the vitality so . . . Mrs. Pendleton did a great job last time with the beverage cart and Aunt Ling does an equally good job “riding shotgun.” Riding shotgun might not sound like much, especially to Easterners, but it’s an important job, like having an extra pair of eyes!
I would also like to ask if you all might want to think up tidbits to bring and contribute during our next two chats, please do so. I’m fairly sure that I have an introduction from American Movie Classics from some years back (read here: B.C.–Before Commercials!) on Treasure Island. Please e-mail me and let me know if any of you would like me to send it out before that Monday’s Chat Room. (Don’t worry if you don’t recognize the email. This is one of those things that our computer sends out on their email instead of mine. The subject ilne will read about Treasure Island so you’ll know.)
Please forgive the long post but . . . once again, Rush, y’all be safe and sound and we can hardly wait to see “Baby Sarah!”

First off, my humble apologies for missing last Monday’s chat. Duty called and I had to counsel with a couple that evening.
I’d also like to pass along my humblest wishes for you and Mrs. Glick. You know you will have my prayers for a safe journey both to and back from Russia. And of course my prayers will also go out to #1 daughter as well. I’m sure you are both filled with joy and anticipation! I’m excited for you, as are many others here.
I know you will do a great job the next couple of weeks! I hope to be there for both, and I hope that after I get into my new humble home, I can be more regular in attending the chats (but there will always be the potential for “emergency” counseling sessions regardless).

Sorry for having been a stranger recently. I contracted an extremely nasty virus the last week of April and have been out of commission since then. Although the doctors have said it will take some time for this thing to work its way out of my system, I feel quite blessed that it wasn’t anything too serious. The two weeks of work I’ve missed are a blessing in disguise because the mental relief offset any physical discomfort.
I especially regret missing the last two chats as those are so much fun. I’m not sure if I’ll be up for the next one or not, but hope to rejoin honorable comrades soon!
In the meantime I send my best to all and offer congratulations to our esteemed and very capable temporary hostesses for their glowing reviews!

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful comments. They are much appreciated!
I am slowly getting strength back and have been checking in here and at Kurt’s site. The doctor wasn’t kidding when he said it would take awhile before I wouldn’t feel tired all the time!
At first I was totally staying away from the internet and TV (not a bad thing actually), but I’ve spent the last several days watching the Laurel and Hardy DVDs that came last week. Laughter is indeed excellent medicine!
God Bless you all!
Hello, from Orenburg, Russia Name: Rush Glick Date Posted: May 14, 04 – 7:46 AM Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
I just wanted to let the members of our Charlie Chan Family know that Sarah Marie Glick is our newest member. I am using ther computer of the son from the family who is hosting us on our visit to the beautiful city of Orenburg, Russia.
We officially adopted Sarah following our court appearance on May 12 in this very friendly Russian city. She is VERY sweet, indeed, and beaming mother and broadly smiling father are as proud and as happy as can be! Sarah never tires at looking at ANY detail around her, and I thinh we may have a furture detective in our midst…
Everything is going very well, and we are leaving for Moscow very early tomorrow morning for a two-hour Orenburg Airlines flight. On Monday, we visit the U.S. embassy in that city to take care of our sdaughter’s papers, and then, on Tuesday, we are scheduled tio fly back home.
Our very best wishes to everyone, and my special thanks, again to Virginia, Aunt Ling, Mrs. Pendleton, and others who, I am certain, ran last Monday evening’s chat/viewing to perfection! I will be thinking of everyone when the next chat takes place, which I must sadly miss, as well. Take care, everyone, and good health to you and yours…

I’m so glad to hear everything is going so well. Your daughter will bring you much happiness and I know you and Marie will do the same for her.
We’ll keep you in our prayers for safe travels in Russia and the trip back!
How Do You Watch Your Charlie Chan Movies? Name: Virginia Johnson Date Posted: May 15, 04 – 7:12 AM Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Say you get to watch all the movies you want of an evening with company who want to watch with you.
So what do you put in the vcr?
Just Chan movies (and maybe Holmes, Moto, etc.)?
Or maybe start with a cartoon and an episode of your favorite serial?
If you like cartoons, do you like vintage from the thirties, WWII, or maybe The Pink Panther?
Yikes, that’s a whole other evening of Pink Panther cartoons AND movies! Time for me to stop asking and for you all to think about it!
Re: How Do You Watch Your Charlie Chan Movies? Name: Steve O Date Posted: May 15, 04 – 10:04 AM Email: steveliz at mchsi dot com
Actually, I tend to watch Chans while doing household chores (like ironing). It helps pass the time and keep my mind occupied.
I don’t usally couple it another movie. if only because I don’t like to sit in front of a TV for more than an hour and a half at one time especially during the non winter months. The cartoon idea is a good one though! Those are pretty short and would be a good “warm-up”.
Even these past several weeks when I’ve been not feeling well, I’d only watch TV a couple hours per day (daytime TV stinks! )
Re: Re: How Do You Watch Your Charlie Chan Movies? Name: Maurelius Date Posted: May 20, 04 – 9:42 AM Email: email@example.com
I tend to pull a pre-recorded movie out if something comes up to remind me about it or a piece of it. If someone mentions zombies I might get out the “Walk with a Zombie” tape. If the high renaissance comes up, “Agony and Ecstasy.” Around Halloween, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” One of the channels (doing a month of “epics”) is going to show “Zulu,” I’ve been seeing the promo so I’ll pull out my copy and watch when I want.

What we need now is you home, safe and sound, for our next chat, complete with the newest Chan production–Sarah Marie Glick!
I’d like to promise that we’ll behave ourselves but you’d know better. . . . So please come home anyway. . . . Or at least send Sarah!

Rush and Marie,
You have been in our thoughts and prayers and conversations since you have left. And even before that. It was wonderful to see your message and know that everything is going ahead as planned with the trip. We will keep our fingers crossed until you return safe and sound.
Re: A Open Letter to Rush Name: Mrs. Pendleton Date Posted: May 19, 04 – 4:09 PM Email: email@example.com
We are SO excited for you and Marie and Sarah. Good to hear things are finalized, but we are still holding our breath until we know you are all home, safe and sound.
Please don’t worry about the chat room – it only got a little charred and Virginia is stepping gingerly around the furniture polish as we try to clean it up for your return.
Virginia was an awesome hostess as you already know. Her shoes were very difficult to fill with the beverage cart. You’ll probably hear about it anyway, so I might as well tell you that I got a little too much liquor in the Rummy Punch and Auntie got a little punchy (but cute!), but she’s ok now. I only spilled on a few people, but I don’t think the cart is too much the worse for wear!
It will be good to have you back!
Re: A Open Letter to Rush Name: Maurelius Date Posted: May 20, 04 – 9:50 AM Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
I’m not sure anyone has addressed this point directly, but as a somewhat newbie I will.
Every child every how is a paramount treasure and a miracle, but there’s got to be a recognition of the Glick’s going the extra mile for Sarah. They’ve done more that I would be willing to do on a volunteer basis, and the world all ’round is richer for it.
Best wishes. “You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din.” So, hold down the din, I’m trying to sleep.
Smilies Name: Maurelius Date Posted: May 20, 04 – 9:55 AM Email: email@example.com
No big deal. But I can’t disable the smilies, with the little “disable smilies” button on bottom of compose post window.
I want to. Because smilies just ain’t me.
Joe Simon (pioneer comic book creator) did a comic in the late 60s/early 70s with a villain who wore an unremovable “Smilie” face, the old original yellow one. The character complained once how tough it was to function with an expression glued on you. That’s how I feel, only not too strongly.
This is no deal-killer. But instruction is invited.

Dear Aumt Ling and Virginia,
Marie and I returned home with little Sarah late last evening following our 12-hour Moscow-LAX flight. We are all doing well, and yours truly is back at work adding some final touches to our museum as we ready to hold our opening at our new site this Saturday.
In 20 minutes I will be meeting Marie, her mother, and Sarah at our pediatrician’s office where we will have our little one checked over to make sure that all is well. My deepest thanks to the both of you as well as to everyone else for all of the very kind words. I can tell you that your thoughts and prayers were felt by all of us.
Sarah did VERY well during our lengthy travels and appointments across Russia and then back home. We are very proud of our little daughter who has taken so well to radical changes in her life and who seems to be a boundless source of smiles, cute sounds (Her first word is “da-da” which could also mean “yes-yes” in Russian!), and curiosity.
Yes, our lives are somewhat “upside-down” now, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Re: Re: Re: JET LAG or CHILD LAG ? Name: Maurelius Date Posted: May 21, 04 – 10:15 AM Email: email@example.com
I’m a little slow, but I catch on that this is FIRST child for you guys?
That first night, whenever it finally occurs, when Mom and Dad and Child are home by themselves, after all the hubbub of getting child, is a funny, special time. Certainly it’s a special golden moment, maybe there will be some anxiety because FINALLY all the responsibility is on YOU and you alone.
Only advice is be prepared to SAVOR each moment, because although to the child a childhood is a long, long time, to the parents it just RACES by!
I have a little Sarah-envy right now thinking about you guys! God love ya!

My sincere thanks to you and the others who continue to offer kind thoughts to us at this very special moment in our lives. Our little Sarah is indeed our first child. We went to her pediatrician for the first time yesterday, her first full day on American soil. Sarah’s doctor is a wonderful, gentle person and he offered much helpful advice to her new parents.
Sarah is adapting to her new life very quickly, and she will doubtless have full control of our humble household in short order! If a proud father may be allowed to say so once more, she is truly a blessing and a delight…
Keye Luke as Kato Name: Chris M Date Posted: May 21, 04 – 11:35 AM Email: email@example.com
Got a question for you. I’ve been watching the Green Hornet Movie Serials in which Keye Luke plays the sidekick Kato. My question is didn’t Keye learn any type of Martial Arts to play this role or was it not required? Throughout the serials he spent most of the time driving Black Beauty and picking up The Hornet everytime he got “blown up” or “knocked down”.
Any infomation would be appreciated.
Re: Keye Luke as Kato Name: Maurelius Date Posted: May 22, 04 – 9:48 PM Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
I’m not a Green Hornet maven, but it’s my understanding that Kato was “just” a courageous, capable companion and helper to G.H., and who indeed had as a primary duty driving the B.B.
For a variety of reasons, the TV production was glad to hyper-up the martial arts fisticuffs (karate was the discipline of the day, I recall) and it makes a kind of entertainment-business sense to take any Asian character and have him kick and eat noodles. This aspect was later spoofed occasionally when Asian-genetic characters in a comedy would be expected to kick a bad guy and say “What you talkin’ ’bout?”
I have no argument with the TV Kato, really. What bothered me more were the “plastic” masks; they looked plastic anyway. And naturally I expected cloth masks like the “real” GH and K. Similar to the Batman of the TV show having the masky-part of his cowl formed of a stiff material and even having what in a cartoon drawing would have been ink lines painted in with white paint. Sort of jarring, and ever-present as TV shows show the the face a lot.
I’ll tell you what the Bruce Lee Kato being a karate expert makes me think of: The Charlie Chan character in “Murder by Death” immediately chucking his Charlie Chan suit and putting on a Fu Manchu “gown” and cloth cap! it’s okay–but WHY?

Sarah will be at the chat room tomorrow night, won’t she?!
At least an appearance?!
You’ll break several hearts if she doesn’t!!!

“It’s a date.” Our little Sarah WILL be in attendance at our chat this evening, although she may be “preoccupied” with other matters during the course of our two hours together. Sarah’s mother informs yours truly that our little one’s bath time will occur at abour 9:00 Eastern Time, so I will, in my capacity as “applier of the soap and shampoo” be required to slip away from our film and chat for about ten minutes.
By the way, I included Sarah’s Russian passport photo in my weekly email to our selected mailing list…
Tonight’s Chat/Film Viewing: “THE GOLDEN EYE” Name: Rush Glick Date Posted: May 24, 04 – 8:12 AM Email: email@example.com
The subject of this evening’s Monday Night Chat and Film Viewing is “THE GOLDEN EYE,” starring Roland Winters. We begin, as is customary, at 8:00 Eastern Time, with arrivals and greetings. Then, thirty minutes later, we begin rolling our personal copies of “THE GOLDEN EYE,” thus allowing us to watch this picture TOGETHER!
As our on-going discussion always drifts in and out of our featured film, if you do not happen to have a copy of this one available for viewing, you WILL be included in our dialog as a valued contributor!
Our Chat Room is located right here at our Charlie Chan Family Home. Once there, please use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us in our usual Monday evening fun and festivities.
Please have a wonderful Monday, and we will hopefully see you gracing an honored seat at our humble table this evening…

Thank you so much, Virginia and the Gang Name: Rush Glick Date Posted: May 26, 04 – 9:36 AM Email: email@example.com
I want to take a moment to thank Virginia as well as the other members of our Monday Chat “Gang” for the excellent continuation during my absence. In the early morning hour (in Russia) when I knew that everyone was gathered for our weekly get-together, my thoughts were with everyone, and I only wised that I had access to the Internet at 4 a.m., Moscow time!
Again, my sincerest thanks…
