Mike n Rach in DC: Greetings to all! We have an opportunity to visit an authentic Afghan feast this evening. We’re actually going to be watching videos of Bukhashi (Google it, but it’s a game that involves throwing a dead goat into a goal), Anyway, we’re going to miss the Chan Clan, but you will all be in our thoughts as we consume goat, lamb and various foreign foods. 🙂

Mike n Rach in DC: See y’all next week! Lots of love, MnR.

Matt1: Hello Rush!

Rush: Hello, Matt!

Mike n Rach in DC has left this room

Rush: We just missed Mike and Rachel.

Matt1: I just noticed that

Rush: Sounds like they will be having a good evening out!

Rush: The good news is that BOTH of our New Adventures are available online.

Matt1: Interesting

Rush: Those seem to go in cycles..at times there are LOTS of them online, and at others, few.

Matt1: I have dvd’s, but tonights are on two discs, so I’ll need to swtich

Rush: Yes, me too.

Rush: The first is on disc 1.

Rush: The second should appear on disc 3.

Matt1: Yes….then 3

Matt1: Yup

Rush: 🙂

Rush: I was looking at akll the serials that Keye Luke made.

Rush: There were five!

Rush: So, we have no trouble coming up with serials to view throughout the year.

Matt1: Available to us?

Rush: I think so.

Rush: I checed a few.

Matt1: Very good!

Rush: (checked)

Rush: We could always have some “replacement” material if necessary.

Rush: Radio shows.

Rush: The Chan Clan…

Matt1: Radio shaows were a fun detour

Rush: (IF people have the cartoons in their collections!

Rush: That’s what we have coming up.

Matt1: I still need to order those

Rush: Starting next week.

Rush: They can be found across the Internet.

Rush: eBay is a good place to look.

Matt1: The commercials were brutal last year

Rush: You can find them at “Buy it Now” prices.

Rush: TERRIBLE!

Rush: That made them unwatchable.

Matt1: Yes….Almost everything is getting commercialized now….even the internet

Rush: That is sadly true.

Rush: I spoke with Virginia yesterday.

Rush: She sounds as good as ever.

Matt1: How is she?

Rush: Doing well.

Matt1: Hope she pops in again

Rush: Me too.

Rush: It is a case of getting a computer and Internet access.

Rush: She’s on a limited budget.

Matt1: Understood

Rush: I suggested that she see if any people at her church have a used computer that might meet her basic needs.

Matt1: Good idea

Rush: I think it could be done.

Matt1: Is she still in Texas?

Rush: Yes.

Rush: Ft. Worth.

Rush: (Or is it Dallas?)

Rush: 🙂

Matt1: Wasn’t sure when she went missing fo awhile

Rush: I get them mixed up!

Rush: Dallas, I believe!

Matt1: I thought she was west of Dallas, but not 100%

Rush: Yes…I am sure, now that I think of it!

Rush: Well…I guess we can ready our final chapter of the serial.

Rush: Just us, it seems!

Matt1: I’m ready here

Rush: Okay….

Matt1: No cliffhanger, I guess

Rush: 30 seconds…

Rush: No more cliffhangers, right!

Rush: 10 seconds…

Rush: 5…

Rush: GO!!!

Rush: The last time we see those mysterious hands at the intro!

Matt1: Yes!

Rush: And, our final visit to Shadow Island.

Rush: Not a place one would want to buy any real estate on!

Matt1: lol, no

Rush: 🙂

Rush: Being shelled!

Rush: ZIG-ZAG!!!!

Rush: They could have made themselves a tougher target, at least!

Matt1: This bar reminds me of one of the Chan films

Rush: Oh, well…they made it anyway!

Rush: I am thinking which one….

Rush: i did look like a familiar one.

Matt1: I can’t remember which film

Rush: Probably a Monogram.

Rush: “Bonzai!”

Rush: Interesting that stock footage of a Japanese bomber taking off to the “Bonzai” cheers.

Matt1: Yes

Rush: I wonder how they got that.

Rush: maybe a pre-war newsreel?

Rush: Here we go…

Matt1: This bar

Rush: Manolo’s from “Panama” comes to mind for me.

Rush: Cy Kendall is vaguely reminding me of a Sidney Greenstreet-type character!

Matt1: Ah, yes

Rush: Confusing body count!

Rush: 🙂

Rush: I like the shooting style as they thrust their guns forward with each shot!

Rush: Not good for the aim!

Matt1: and never take cover

Rush: Right!

Rush: Keye Luke in disguise.

Rush: I predict she meets her doom in that sub!

Matt1: The ending I bet

Rush: Yes.

Rush: WOW!

Matt1: Nice hit

Rush: Shadow Island in a shambles!

Rush: Meanwhile….in the submarine…

Rush: End is near….3 minutes to go….

Rush: Those pilots must have grown up in the US!

Matt1: Ah ha!

Rush: 🙂

Rush: Depth charges…

Matt1: You called this on

Rush: “D’oh!”

Rush: “That was OUR sub!”

Rush: And…there we have it!

Rush: puetic justice at the end!

Rush: And all’s well at the bar….

Rush: That was pretty good.

Matt1: Good ending

Rush: I agree.

Rush: And Keye Luke got to shine.

Matt1: That was after his role in Chan?

Rush: I found a nice write-up on Keye Luke’s serials, and I am going to format it to include in our Study.

Matt1: Very nice

Rush: These serials among other films.

Rush: He did keep busy.

Matt1: Yes!

Rush: I cannot imagine he played any or many villian roles!

Matt1: Can’t imagine him in such a role, no

Rush: He was probably typecast as a good guy!

Rush: Possibly due in great part to his Chan work!

Rush: I hope no one was scared away by tonight’s features.

Matt1: It is a holiday, so?

Rush: I did include a note in the newsletter that the features are available online.

Rush: That, too.

Rush: I don’t know how many got the day off.

Matt1: I actually never got this weeks email reminder…..Noticed it on Facebook

Rush: it has been a rarity for me in my life.

Rush: HM!

Rush: Please re-send you email address to me.

Rush: I may have entered it incorrectly.

Rush: Did you get it last week?

Matt1: I’ve been getting them, just this week was missing

Rush: Interesting.

Rush: The only thing I changed was to add GS’s new email address to the list.

Matt1: We’ll see if next week is Ok and will let you know

Rush: Maybe I can sens out a test to you later.

Rush: (send)

Rush: 10 minutes to go…

Rush: We have the Melbourne Cup coming up soon, by the way.

Matt1: Always fun!

Rush: Yes! A tradition!

Rush: First comes the Halloween Party.

Rush: Monday the 28th.

Matt1: And we get back to some Oland too!

Rush: Yes!

Matt1: Got to work on my costume this year, hmmm

Matt1: Cued!

Rush: The film for Halloween is “Dead Men Tell”

Rush: Me too, Matt!

Matt1: Good choice

Rush: One of the “spooky” Chan films.

Rush: Last year we shared “CC’s Secret” I believe.

Rush: Maybe “Wax Museum” for next year…?

Rush: “Black Magic”?

Matt1: Thought we did Wax last year?

Rush: Then, we can do “Secret” or “Black Magic.”

Rush: Or…?

Matt1: BM works

Rush: Yes.

Rush: 5 minutes to go…

Rush: Many empty seats!

Matt1: Guess we have front row!

Rush: Yeah…

Rush: This is like the old days….

Matt1: lol, yes….or Christmas

Matt1: Now we can have a meeting

Rush: No.

Rush: “Your Money or Your Wife”

Godwinshelley2: Good – I am cued – the Nostalgia Merchant one

Rush: Episode one.

Rush: You are thinking of “The Lost Face.”

Godwinshelley2: The dog one and the acid one are my least favorite episodes

Rush: Yes.

Godwinshelley2: They make me sad

Rush: Two tough ones to watch, yes.

Godwinshelley2: Rush you can use either address I sent you – because of “porch pirates” we use the PO box alot

Rush: Well…we are at 90 seconds to go…

Godwinshelley2: AND today I missed a package because UPS tried to deliver to the PO box and of course it is a holiday

Rush: CD!

Rush: WELCOME!

Cdirus: Hi everyone!

Matt1: Hello CD!

Rush: We are “on hold” for a few…

Godwinshelley2: TV episodes do run short – so we can wait a bit

Rush: How are you this evening CD and Paul?

Godwinshelley2: I know – it would have been better for me the next week too

Rush: Are we ready to roll our first feature?

Godwinshelley2: Any WHY is the June one always near Father’s day?

Rush: “Your Money or Your Wife”?

Godwinshelley2: ready

Rush: Okay…

Cdirus: I’m doing good

Rush: Everyone ready?

Godwinshelley2: yes

Cdirus: Ready!

Rush: If you need them, they are at the above links…

Rush: Okay….

Rush: Let’s say….

Rush: 30 seconds…

Godwinshelley2: ok

Rush: 20 seconds…

Rush: 15…

Rush: 10…

Rush: 5…

Rush: GO!!!

Matt1:

Godwinshelley2: Car

Godwinshelley2: on a windy road

Rush: A ’57 T-Bird.

Rush: Yes.

Rush: Intro…

Rush: Chinese fades to…

Rush: “The New Adventures of Charlie Chan”

Rush: This one was before the arrival of Barry Chan.

Godwinshelley2: Nice ocean front property

Rush: CC works alone.

Rush: VERY good property, yes!

Rush: Even way back then.

Rush: What would the cable have done, I am not sure.

Rush: Unless it was set at “neck-level”?

Godwinshelley2: Ha!

Godwinshelley2: The old “Jayne Mansfield”

Rush: I think we are at Malibu again…

Rush: YOW, GS!

Rush: But, yes.

Godwinshelley2: Guess I’ved watched too many horror films this month so far

Rush: 🙂

Matt1: Tough crowd

Rush: Hmm…

Rush: I get the impression she does not like her boss’ wife….

Godwinshelley2: Perhaps the Boss’ wife does not like HER

Rush: The reference to the “village” points to this being Malibu.

Rush: Good point, GS!

Rush: I can imagine an insert of a scene with Kramer from “Seinfeld” incerted back a few lines ago!

Matt1: lol, yes

Godwinshelley2: You mean his “portrait”?

Rush: No, the mention of “Kramer being a strange person” …

Rush: Nice old reel-to-reel tape recorder!

Rush: This episode along with the next four were shot in the Los Angeles area.

Rush: The sixth is set in Washington, DC, and then we move to Europe.

Godwinshelley2: Were these episodes used to “sell” the series before moving production to Europe?

Rush: Never get on the back of a man on crutches!

Rush: Possibly, GS.

Rush: Maybe they decided on more exotic locales.

Rush: We get some really nice locations along the way!

Godwinshelley2: Weren’t they starting to do local shoots for some “hard-hitting” telelvision series around then?

Rush: And those were really LOCATION episodes for the most part!

Rush: I think you are right, GS.

Matt1:

Rush: That would probably coincide with television coming into its own by then.

Rush: TYSM, Matt…

Rush: I like that sound of the ocean clue that was heard on the tape earlier.

Rush: I guess we can call this the “second degree.”

Rush: LOTS of repeated questions and no coffee.

Godwinshelley2: I liked the film Sneakers where the audio clue “sounded like a cocktail party”? – turned out they were driving by geese!

Rush: 🙂

Cdirus: GS been a long time since I saw that movie

MnRnDC has joined this room

Godwinshelley2: Hello MnRn

MnRnDC: A very quick hello from DC!

MnRnDC: Sorry to miss the clan tonight!

Matt1: Hello M & R!

Rush: You are BACK!

Godwinshelley2: AH – I see your new signin

Rush: Just missed you earlier!

Cdirus: Hi M&R!

MnRnDC: Briefly…

Rush: You have not left for that dinner, yet?

MnRnDC: We’re dining on “nomad food” tonight!

Rush: Sounds good.

Matt1: How is it?

MnRnDC: In between appetizers and lamb / other slain animals…

Rush: I will say “welcome” to you and Rachel…

Rush: 🙂

MnRnDC: Hope y’all are having a great time…we’ll be back next week.

Rush: I am happy that you came back at least for a little while, tonight!

Matt1: Have fun!

Rush: Okay, M/R!

Rush: Enjoy dinner!

MnRnDC: Pro tip: If you get a chance to have any Afghan food, it’s definitely worth a try. burp

MnRnDC: See you next week!

Rush: But do not try that game you noted earlier!

Rush: Messy!

MnRnDC: Bukashi!

Godwinshelley2: I will be missing next week – another Indiana trip to check on my folks

Rush: YES!

Godwinshelley2: No cutlery at those restaurants?

Cdirus:

MnRnDC has left this room

Rush: Next week…

Rush: “The Chinese Ring”

Rush: The first of the Winters Chan movies.

Rush: Then…on the 28th…our annual Halloween Party!

Rush: THEN…melbourne Cup night.

Godwinshelley2: Someone on TCM page of facebook was wanting films that had old radio production in them – I kindly offered our Chan film

Rush: Nice, GS!

Rush: Great suggestion!

Rush: And early TV, as well!

Godwinshelley2: It is a good film – radio AND early television

Rush: Yes!

Rush: We near the finale of this one…

Rush: Chan set his trap…and it worked again…

Cdirus: That is one twisted woman

Rush: “I killed her to make you happy.”

Rush: (BONG…Cuckoo…)

Rush: Good first episode!

Rush: Next…

Matt1:

Rush: “The Final Curtain”

Matt1: Got to switch dvd’s …..brb

Rush: (Episode 11)

Rush: That one is on disc 3.

Rush: We can take five here to switch…

Godwinshelley2: Cued to THE CAT

Matt1: Ready here!

Rush: Okay….

Rush: I am getting there, too…

Godwinshelley2: Again – will be missing next week when I am at my parent’s internet-free home

Rush: Yes.

Rush: I wish you a happy and safe trip, GS!

Cdirus: Ok, at the cat

Rush: I am at the cat, too…

Godwinshelley2: Yes – a quick side-trip to Mars (October Bash) – but a short visit – late Friday leaving early Sunday – not the full length fun like in June

Rush: Ready, Paul?

Rush: Well…

Rush: Let’s say….30 seconds…

Godwinshelley2: ok

Rush: 20 seconds…

Rush: 15…

Rush: 10…

Rush: 5…

danventure has joined this room

Rush: GO!!!

Matt1:

Godwinshelley2: Hello DA

Matt1: Hello Dan!

Godwinshelley2: JUST started the second feature

Rush: DV!

danventure: Great timing, I see!

Rush: Just started “The Final Curtain”

Rush: WELCOME!

Rush: If you need it, the link is above.

Rush: We can get you situated, DV!

danventure: So, time stamp?

Cdirus: Hi Dan!

Rush: 1:30

Rush: Intro!

Rush: Title.

Rush: Naish credit.

Rush: “Archway Hotel, London”

Godwinshelley2: Ah – BARRY

Rush: YES!

Cdirus: Barry? What happened to Lee? I thought he was #1?

Rush: Are you caught up, DV?

Rush: AH! Good question, CD!

danventure: Yes,thanks!

danventure: Got “caught up” with my first exposure to this new portrayal of CC.

Rush: It seems that CC is calling this sone his “Number One Son” for whatever reason!

Cdirus: Ahh Hamlet. Summed up in two words – Everyone dies

Rush: maybe as his righthand son, now, that makes Barry his “Number One”?

Rush: Your first time watching these, DV?

Rush: I have to say, they grew on me fast!

Rush: Barry Chan is played by a young James Hong.

Cdirus: I think Oland is still my favorite Chan

Godwinshelley2: One facebook someone was discussing a bad film called “The Lost Empire” 1984 – with a detective named “Charlie Chang”

Rush: He’s over 90 now.

Rush: Still acting.

Rush: Mostly voice work.

Godwinshelley2: James Hong is still active on Facebook – I recommend you Frend him

Godwinshelley2: Friend

Rush: Yes.

Rush: I have gotn to meet him a few times.

Rush: (gotten)

Godwinshelley2: He seems to have a good sense of humor

Rush: One time in Honolulu when i was with Lou and Hawaii steve.

Rush: 2011.

Godwinshelley2: Broad Stripes have been seen on women in both of these episodes

Godwinshelley2: WOW – how Wonderful

Rush: it was fun.

Matt1: I can imagine!

Godwinshelley2: I picked up the Boxset of KungFu at the MidAtlantic Nostalgia fest and look forward to seeing many old friends in it

Rush: We have some serious jealously brewing in this adventure!

danventure: Yes, Rush, I didn’t even know of this series till tonight…yeah, I am behind that way.

Rush: Trouble ahead!

danventure: Wasn’t J. Carroll Naish in a previous CC?

Rush: DV, I am envious! You can now discover all 39 episodes starting with this one!

Rush: Wise man once said, “Drink wine in proper mood, sing loud in suitable location.”

Godwinshelley2: There are some films and tv episodes I wish I could watch again for the first time

Rush: Barry Chan was, I think, mentioned in a Biggers story.

Godwinshelley2: nice

Rush: We can also see him rendered in one of the earliest Chan Sunday Comics by Alfred Andriola.

danventure: I remember reading all of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It felt sad to think I would never have that “I have no idea what happens next” feeling…until now.

Rush: The artist actually made his Barry look a LOT like Layne Tom.

Rush: (Who played three Chan sons in the Chan film series.)

Godwinshelley2: Keye Luke

Godwinshelley2: Who’s next

Rush: So, we can imagine this barry being called “Charlie Chan, Jr.” in “Olympics.

Godwinshelley2: Layne Tom

Rush: YES! 🙂

Matt1:

Godwinshelley2: Victor Sen Yung

Rush: Men live together like birds in the woods, but when death comes, each takes his own flight.

Rush: TYSM…Matt…

Rush: The obvious and truth rarely identical.

Rush: No greater pleasure than agreeing with friend’s opinion.

Rush: LOTS of aphorisms in this episode!

Rush: Delay does not alter bad news.

Rush: “Scotland Yard”

Rush: That’s Inspector Duff.

Rush: I would suggest that he is, perhaps, the SON of the late Inspector!

Godwinshelley2: That would make sense. Is Duff the one seen in Behind That Curtain?

Rush: Yes.

Rush: And, last seen in “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise.”

Rush: “LIFE” magazine.

Godwinshelley2: So he could have a son as old as this Inspector Duff

Rush: Indeed!

Rush: Word of advice from ancient traveler: bubbly champagne very, very sneaky.

Cdirus: oops, forgot pop’s advice

Rush: He didn’t listen…!

Rush: He will have one nasty hangover…

Godwinshelley2: Do they ever listen?

Cdirus:

Rush: Compounded by messing up his Pop’s case!

Godwinshelley2: If there was a Charlie Chan card/dice game – would “son” cards take away points usually BUT if you roll a double – you GET a clue

Rush: To learn what is good, thousand days are not enough. To learn what is evil, one hour is more than enough.

Rush: YES, GS!

Godwinshelley2: I think we should design one! I’ve been pondering this

Rush: And, there WAS a Chan board game made in 1937…but that aspect was missing!

Rush: 🙂

Rush: Good idea, GS!

Rush: That would be fun!

Rush: Could be done!

Godwinshelley2: Maybe just streamline it to just cards – no dice. Then would need a “benefit” card of some kind to change son card from negative to positive

Rush: Limited edition…for CCF members!

Godwinshelley2: Then turn it into a phone app for $.99

Rush: HN!

Rush: Interesting.

Godwinshelley2: Yikes

Rush: NOT a good idea by CC just then!

Godwinshelley2: BRB

Rush: I hope he TRIPLE checked that gun ahead of time!

Rush: THE END…

Rush: Closing credits…

Matt1:

Rush: Once in a while, I see one of the technical crew pop up on something, like the old “Secret Agent” TV show…

Rush: AKA: “Danger Man.”

Rush: (Applause…)

Rush: Well!

Rush: Thank you all for coming tonight!

Rush: Sparce, but very nice!

PaulM: nice chANGE

Rush: These “New Adventures” are really fun, IMHO!

Godwinshelley2: Rush – there is a card game called Love Letters that is simple yet fun

Cdirus: Hey Rush, did you send out an email for tonight? I don’t recall seeing one.

Matt1: Good night folks and hope you have a good week ahead

Rush: Please watch them as you can…you will not be disappointed!

Godwinshelley2: And there is a version called Letters to Santa that is fun too

Rush: Yes, GS?

Godwinshelley2: I wonder if it might be a start to draft a Chan set

Rush: CD, I did…but Matt also mentioned not receiving one!

Rush: I think something went wrong at my end!

Rush: SORRY!

Godwinshelley2: It’s inexpensive – if you want to look for it – and the Santa one you could play with your kids

Rush: Maybe I lost the Internet as I was sending it.

Cdirus: Ok, I normally receive them

Matt1 has left this room

Rush: Sounds good, GS!

Godwinshelley2: A start

Rush: GS, is one address better than the other to reach you?

Rush: Next week…

Rush: “The Chinese Ring.”

Godwinshelley2: The PO Box is best if I don’t know something is arriving – since I won’t know to look on my porch

PaulM has left this room

Rush: A nice fist appearance for Roland Winters as Chan.

Godwinshelley2: Sad I will be missing it

Rush: Okay, the POB it will be.

Rush: TYSM!

Godwinshelley2: Great

Rush: So…good night, everyone!

Cdirus: See you next week!

Rush: have a GREAT week!

Godwinshelley2: And you have a good next couple of weeks everyone

Rush: take care…

Godwinshelley2: Night all

Godwinshelley2 has left this room

Rush: I will resend this week’s newsletter.

Cdirus has left this room

Rush: Good night, CD and DV!

Rush: I hope you enjoyed your first viewing of this series, DV!
