Rush: Hello, Lulu!
Rush: Welcome!
Lulu: Ho
Lulu: That should be Hi
Rush: We are a little early, but I wanted to make sure I could log-in as last week there were issues with that!
Rush: Well, lulu…as Santa would say… 🙂
Rush: This is your first time here. lulu?
Rush: Sorry about the lowercase!
Lulu: I’m a long time fan of Charlie’s. First time here.
Rush: AH! Great!
Rush: Well, we have been holding our Monday night Chats for more than 20 years now!
Rush: Usually we have 8 ot 10 show.
Rush: You will find this to be probably the nicest group of people around the Internet!
Lulu: I’ve read most of his books and I’ve seen most of his movies.
Rush: Perfect!
Rush: Do you happen to have a copy of tonight’s movie?
Louise has joined this room
Louise: Hi Rush
Rush: Sadly, this one is not available free on the Internet.
Rush: Hello, Louise!
Louise: I was joining because you looked lonely but I see lulu has joined you!
Rush: Welcome!
Rush: Please meet our newest member…Lulu!
Lulu: I’ve never seen it I dont think.
Louise: I won’t join in on the radio drama but can chat until you do.
Lulu: Hello Louise, I’m Lulu.
Louise: Nice to see you here Lulu. We have lots of fun and everyone is very nice.
Rush: What we do is, we start running our personal copies at the same time, so we can watch and have fun with the movie together!
Rush: Louise, how are you feeling?
Rush: If you don’t have a copy of thefilm tonight, please stay! You might not be alone in that regard!
Louise: I’m good Rush. I didn’t have COVID, my sondid, and he had no symptoms.
Louise: *son did
Rush: AH! How’s HE doing?
Lulu: Gotta break – eating pizza.
Louise: He is as feisty as ever
Rush: Good to hear!
Louise: It does break your heart, though, when you have to worry about it.
Rush: Please feel free to grab your slice and eat as we talk!
Louise: Like most of his friends (he is in grad school) he is feeling lonely because he can’t come home and he can’t have his friends over for Thanksgiving.
Rush: I just got done adding “The Wit and Wisdom of Birmingham Brown” to our “Shanghai Chest” section!
Rush: Took a LOT of time this week! He has a LOT of dialog tonight!
Louise: I will take a look at that, Rush. He is such a wonderful part of these movies.
Rush: I can understand that, Louise!
Rush: That would be tough for Thanksgiving!
Louise: I have been, off and on, working on a video of the Chan Women. They fascinate me, especially the reporters.
Rush: I agree that our Birmingham Brown is INTEGRAL to the Mionograam series!
Rush: He’s always a delight!
Louise: And as I have often commented, those old women who wear Victorian clothes still make me shake my head!
Louise: What are your Thanksgiving plans?
Rush: To me, he’s sort of an “everyman” character, with whom we can all identify!
Rush: Our plans are to have our usual smallish family gathering.
Louise: Funny that one of the few famous black actors of the time is the one we all identify with!
Rush: How about you?
Rush: YES!
Rush: I just saw what you said above!
Rush: Great idea about the Chan women!
Rush: GREAT idea about the Chan women video!

Rush: 🙂
Louise: Hi Matt!
Rush: Yes, we have a new member…Lulu…who is out momentarily eating pizza!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes…now that the novelty has worn off it’s getting to be more of a slog.
Rush: Marie has her moments, too, with that! She hast to teach BOTH cvlassroom students as well as those who are at home!
Rush: Juggling act.
Matt1: My cousin teaches high school….teaches from school, no students

Godwinshelley2: There were lots of links on facebook today for Karloff on the Red Skelton show episodes
Rush: The killer!
Matt1: Pain in the bacl!
Mike n Rachel in DC: Interesting that there’s been no dialogue so far
Rush: Welcome back, Lulu!
Louise: shiny knife

Godwinshelley2: Hello Lulu!!
Rush: Lt. Mike Ruark.
Matt1: Lt Mike!
DanVenture: [BTW: I found a clean online streaming copy of “Chest” at https://archive.org/details/shanghai-chest-1948 ]
Rush: Yes!
Rush: ReallY!
Rush: Hoe GREAT!
Godwinshelley2: Lulu – are you running a dvd of this film along with us?

Rush: TYSM, DV!
Mike n Rachel in DC: George Kaplan, perhaps?
Lulu: Hello GodwinShelly2
Rush: I looked and looked…and YOU found it!
Matt1: <tin can>
Rush: TYSM…Matt.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Gong…can…lots of action early on, Matt. 🙂
Rush: Lulu…at each “demise,” it is our tradition that we “kick the can”.
Lulu: What is that?
Godwinshelley2: And, as we have seen in many, many Chan films, do not sit with your back to an open window
Rush: That goes back to a previous version of our Chat Room where we had sound effects available.
Rush: We had a “can” but no “bucket” sound!
Lulu: Oh OK
Rush: So…the tradition continues with “imagined” sounds!
Godwinshelley2: Lulu – how did you find us?
Rush: Note how this scene plays out!
Rush: Later in our movie, Chan actually does the same thing!
Godwinshelley2: Ha – good transition
Matt1: Poor BB, lol
Rush: Yes, GS!
Mike n Rachel in DC: many little animals…
Louise: Time mark please
Godwinshelley2: 9:00
Rush: Lulu, were you able to get the address to the online copy of our movie?
Mike n Rachel in DC: 9:15
Godwinshelley2: 9:15
Rush: We can bring you to the right place in the film.
Godwinshelley2: 9:30
Godwinshelley2: 9:45
Louise: thanks all
Godwinshelley2: 10:00
Rush: “Night in Bastille not exactly bed of roses.”
Lulu: I was looking in search engine for Charlie Chan, I saw this site and I meant to check it out on Mondays but I never remembered to check on time.
Rush: Russell Hicks
Godwinshelley2: Nice – glad you found us – we are a friendly group
Rush: Flashback
Rush: We see Mr. Hicks in a few Chan films…first in “Charlie Chan in Shanghai.”
Louise: agreed, GS
Mike n Rachel in DC: Glad to see he went straight after that deal in Shanghai
Godwinshelley2: I don’t recall many “flashbacks” in these films, usually Chan recounting or having the people recount earlier actions
Rush: Tonight he’s in another “Shanghai” movie!
Rush: He’s also seen as the warden in “Dark Alibi.”
Rush: Yes, GS.
Lulu: Am I missing out? Are you watching a film?
Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes, but this time he’s on the right side of the law.
Godwinshelley2: Like he couldn’t dial that phone himself
Rush: There is one in “Charlie Chan in Paris.” Actually TWO.
Rush: Yes, GS!
Godwinshelley2: Lulu – open a second window on your computer and go to this address for that second window – minimize both windows and watch them both
Godwinshelley2: https://archive.org/details/shanghai-chest-1948
Godwinshelley2: That is the link to this film if you do not have the DVD
Rush: Just highlight, copy, and paste in the address bar in another window.
Godwinshelley2: when you get there and it starts running, ask us for the time and forward your film to that time
Godwinshelley2: Maybe minimize is the wrong word – make them smaller to fit one screen
Rush: As a last resort, just click on the link, which will get you the film but take you from the Chat room…but you can open another window to return to the Chat Room!
Rush: Tony Pindello.
Godwinshelley2: I like the lady’s suit and her hat is quite sensible
Louise: That hat is trying to escape
Rush: “Very funny.”
Mike n Rachel in DC: It seems that she’s trying to channel a little Lauren Bacall
Lulu: where are you in the film?
Rush: At this point, Charlie Chan is based in San Francisco.
Mike n Rachel in DC: 16:20
Godwinshelley2: at 16:5 in
Rush: Yes, Mike!
Godwinshelley2: 16:30
Rush: Willie Best!
Louise: Willie Best shows up
Godwinshelley2: Can you forward your scroll bar on the film
Rush: Nice dialogue here.
Godwinshelley2: They actually call him Willie Best, too!!
Rush: Yes!
Lulu: I’m on a laptot
Mike n Rachel in DC: Huh? Is this Willie Best playing a character named Willie Best?
Lulu: I’m on a laptop $
Mike n Rachel in DC: This dialogue is priceless
Godwinshelley2: Lulu – do you have 2 windows open
Godwinshelley2: or just one?
Rush: Can you open two windows on the laptop, Lulu?
Godwinshelley2: Or you might be able to watch the movie on your smart phone
Rush: What I have done is switch back and forth, window to window to watch and then chat!
tenman: Can always just switch back and forth tabs in the browser if not, leaving the sound on on the movie while checking back int the chat room
Godwinshelley2: Thats a good idea to leave the sound on
Rush: Yes.
Hounder has left this room
Hounder has joined this room
Mike n Rachel in DC: Didn’t the killer have gloves on? Clue?
Rush: WB, Hounder!
Rush: Clue, indeed!
Mike n Rachel in DC: Erk. Just realized I sound like Kashimo.
Rush: “Happiest walk in life of mailman are on holiday.”
Lulu: I’m on a laptop now & it’s not playing the movie smoothly, so I’ll go until next week & I’ll be on my PC Thanks and good night.
Godwinshelley2: Chan did not seem like a fringe on the curtains kind of guy to me
Rush: The title of HonoluLou’s blog!
Godwinshelley2: Ok Lulu – glad you stopped in
Hounder: Glad you found us lulu
Godwinshelley2: Rush what is next week’s film
Mike n Rachel in DC: Hope to see you next week!
Rush: Yes, GS!
Rush: maybe that touch reminds him of the “missing” Mrs. Chan?
Lulu has left this room
DanVenture: Peter Cushing shows up
Rush: Remember, the working title for this film was: “Murder By Alphabet.”
Rush: Yes, DV!
Godwinshelley2: I think that is a bit complicated – certainly not what I think about for this
Godwinshelley2: Yea! Plaid is back
Rush: Loud coat!
Rush: Yes!
Louise: She’s wearing her couch now
Mike n Rachel in DC: I’m sure it has a matching tablecloth
Rush: I think she left the hanger in it!
Godwinshelley2: It’s really hard when shoulder pads are in ALL your clothes – so your shirt with pads goes into a jacket with pads and into a coat with shoulder pads – you look like a football player
Louise: she has such a sad face
Mike n Rachel in DC: I’m gradually finding more to like about Winters’s portrayal of Chan. he’s good in this one.
Godwinshelley2: Yes
Louise: He grows on you
Hounder: Never thought of it that way gs
Rush: Just advance notice: I will be driving back to Iowa with my younger daughter during Christmas Break. This will cause me to probably miss TWO Chat evenings.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Oh no!
Godwinshelley2: Don’t take the Donner Pass!!
Louise: We will help, Rush
Rush: So, I will need to lean on some person or persons to tAKE THE REINS FOR THOSE NIGHTS!
Louise: We will help, Rush
Rush: i WILL ONLY HAVE MU PHONE AVAILABLE TO DROP IN!
Louise: Echo
Godwinshelley2: I think we can tag-team it for you
Rush: Sorry about the caps lock!
Rush: TYSM!
Godwinshelley2: what will our films be?
Rush: You all always come through!
Rush: Let’s see…
Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, we’re a “family” after all. 🙂
Rush: Nice graveyard scene.
Godwinshelley2: Those graves look pretty fresh for old graves
Louise: a good family
Mike n Rachel in DC: best line in all of Chan-dom: “Dig.”
Godwinshelley2: Mantan isn’t trying real hard – barely a handful on each shovel
Rush: Okay, the films will be: 12/21: TWO of the “New Adventures of Charlie Chan.” 12/28: “The Return of Charlie Chan”
Rush: The wrap-up of this year!
Godwinshelley2: Hope there are on-line versions for folks
Godwinshelley2: I don’t think I’m going anywhere for the rest of this year
Rush: The two “New Adventures” WILL be online!
Godwinshelley2: Good
Rush: Even “The Return” should be online!
Godwinshelley2: As long as they aren’t the dog or the acid episodes
Hounder: Are you home or with your folks gs
Rush: it was last time I looked.
Godwinshelley2: Home in Delaware – for a change
Godwinshelley2: Parents in Indiana
Rush: Home is nice, is it not, GS?
Godwinshelley2: Yes – and safer too
Rush: Yes.
Hounder: Yea! Gs. Wish I could promise to help cover for you rushbut…
Rush: Understood, Hounder!
Godwinshelley2: I know those places
Rush: Wearing out lots of shoe leather….
Godwinshelley2: I think I could cover – though I’d like some help if possible
Rush: Chabing
Mike n Rachel in DC: Chabing!
Rush: (“Cha-bing”)
Rush: 🙂
Mike n Rachel in DC: Charlie Chan get wrong number…
Rush: She might no nothing of the business…but she gives CC the business.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Hey. That’s a take off on the scene with Lee in “Paris.”
Godwinshelley2: You would think Charlie would hang out by the door to see what she does once he leaves
Rush: Cartwright…”C”
Rush: Yes, GS.
Godwinshelley2: Did you see the cameraman in the car window reflection there?
Rush: Note the type of gloves!
Mike n Rachel in DC: Bad Guy music again…
Rush: CLUE!
Rush: Yes, Mike!
Godwinshelley2: They look like patent leather
Rush: By the way, please send Rachel a wave for me!
Rush: Yes…that’s what they look like.
Rush: Possibly they are something else…
Mike n Rachel in DC: Rach waves back. She’s trying to finish up some statistics homework at the moment…I think she’s waiting for the next fashion moment.
Rush: )GASP!)
Matt1: <tin can>
Rush: TYSM, Matt…
Godwinshelley2: oops!
Godwinshelley2: His tie is askew
Louise: and coat is too big

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ah! Hence: Alphabet Murders
Rush: YES!
Godwinshelley2: See the fringe
Rush: Note.
Louise: “Dolphin”
Rush: Ticklish!
Rush: But…this relates to the killer’s gloves!
Rush: Yes, louise!
Louise: I miss the dolphin: and those new here must think I’m nuts!
Rush: By now, CC has experience in making forged fingerprints!
Rush: Louise…aren’t we ALL?
Rush: 🙂
Mike n Rachel in DC: Third time…
Rush: Yes.
Rush: Third time!
Rush: So, the killer does not wear gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints…but just the opposite!
Godwinshelley2: I like her outfit
Hounder has left this room
Rush: Yes, GS. IMHO, one of the better ones in the series.
Godwinshelley2: That us a big closet
Rush: Yes.
Rush: Room for four.
Rush: Murphy.
Godwinshelley2: And room for a library too
Rush: Yes!
Rush: I could use such a closet!
Rush: Bates.
Godwinshelley2: Mine are more like Fibber McGee
Rush: 🙂
Hounder has joined this room
Hounder: Mine too gs
Rush: Connection troubles, Hounder?
Godwinshelley2: Her purse looks like a lunch box
Mike n Rachel in DC: Where car? There car. Where wolf?
Rush: We see this happen in another film.
Rush: Recall?
Godwinshelley2: You mean the water in the ear?
Rush: I think it happend in “The Trap”?
Rush: Funny here.
Godwinshelley2: Remember when everyone wanted their business name to begin with A, B or C
Rush: yes, GS!
Godwinshelley2: Doesn’t seem to be the case anymore
Louise: AAA funerals_ the first one you find!
Mike n Rachel in DC: Those car seats look like the woman’s dress
Rush: And everyone wanted top billing, thus: “AAAAA funeral Services”, etc.!
DanVenture: Indeed!
Godwinshelley2: 1A Funeral Service
DanVenture: Lot of wars fought over who got the 1st listing.
Godwinshelley2: I had a friend from New Mexico who had their mother’s corpse “poached” by a freewheeling funeral home
Rush: In the San Diego phone book many years ago, the LAST listing was always “Zeke and Zizzy Zzyxx”!
Godwinshelley2: They called in the police to get it back – weren’t going to pay them for a service they did not order
Rush: Perhaps!
Louise: I always wanted a kid named Zeke so he would always be the last in line
Rush: “serious searching music” there…
Rush: Yes, Louise!
Louise: Who is in the picture on the mantle?
Hounder: What a funny bit of trivia rush
Rush: Photo of Tommy on mantel.
Godwinshelley2: Would Zeke be a shortened version of something
Louise: Thanks Rush
Mike n Rachel in DC: Ezekiel I think GS
Hounder: Ezekiel maybe gs
Godwinshelley2: Ah
Louise: yes hounder
Rush: Now, here, CC has BB do almost exactly what he was angry about earlier!
DanVenture: I was wondering about that picture too, Rush.
Rush: Breaking and entering!
tenman: Ok, this headache is getting the better of me. Signing off. Til next week!
Godwinshelley2: OK – tenman – get better
Mike n Rachel in DC: Hope you feel better Tenman!
Hounder: Nite tenma .feel well
Rush: Yes, DV! Actually, i am not sure I noticed it before. Often I am typing and glancing away from the movie!
tenman has left this room
DanVenture: One would think that businesses in San Francisco would lock up.
Rush: I would not react much differently, I admit!
Godwinshelley2: Not that much to steal from a funeral parlor unless you are a medical college
Rush: True!
Rush: CC and company look for information.
Rush: Enter Mr. Grail.
Godwinshelley2: Which is WHY Baltimore is known as “Mob town” – a mob descended on the medical schools years ago because they were tired of the colleges poaching their dead
Rush: Milton Parsons, our “old friend.”
Rush: He was in four Chan movies….
DanVenture: If GS is right, pilfering bodies actually was a practice. With all those funeral parlors Chan found in the SF yellow pages, there would be stiff competition for such services.
Rush: Dead Men Tell: Gene LaFarge
Castle in the Desert: Arthur Fletcher
Dark Alibi: Johnson
The Shanghai Chest: Mr. Grail
Mike n Rachel in DC: Mr. Grail doesn’t know the law very well.
Rush: Picture of the Rome Collosseum.
Rush: Why would this room probably never be rented by a Chinese individual?
Rush: There is the “Shanghai Chest”>
Mike n Rachel in DC: Bad feng shui
DanVenture: If our famed AAA mortician ends up getting shot himself, he’ll be the “Holey” Grail.
Rush: Possibly…but the number “14” would not be desirable. The number “4” has the same sound as the word for “death.”
Mike n Rachel in DC: oooh
Rush: If homes are being built with Chinese as possible buyers, the number “4” will not be used in addresses.
Hounder: Wow rush
Rush: We approach the climax of the movie.
Rush: Yes, Mike!
Rush: Different type of gloves.
Rush: look like brown leather.
Rush: The photo in background.
Louise: Birmingham for the block
Mike n Rachel in DC: BB is the hero!
Rush: YES!
Godwinshelley2: Actor playing Seward?
Rush: Tristam Coffin: Ed Seward
Rush: THE END
Matt1: <yee-haw>
Godwinshelley2: Ah
Rush: (Applause)
Mike n Rachel in DC: <kids-yeah>
Godwinshelley2: The end
Rush: Next week…”The Golden Eye”
DanVenture: Pretty good.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Forgot how enjoyable this one is!
Rush: Not too bad, yes?
Louise: Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!
Rush: TYSM…

Rush: Take care….
Godwinshelley2: And set your scales back 15 pounds
Rush: I hope that Rachel will have a few days off, Mike!
