As the extra will show, they’re basically three tiers high of cages in the middle of a concrete shell. Walking around the third tear with a flashlight to make sure they’re all in their cells….

Part of my work was to do interviews with prisoners, because most are on “indeterminate” sentences.. like “5 to life” – so they keep getting interviewed trying to get a “set time”

They had a “Trustee” who lived outside the walls in a little house in the village to overlook a well pump outside the walls. A guard would go out and check on him daily.
He’d muredered his wife because he wanted peace and quiet.

So he ended up on his own n his own house on San Francisco bay.

The interview I recall most was a fairly new inmate who told me of his first days there.

The Big Yard, where inmates walk around mis-day, is surrounded by catwalks with guards with guns. The guns only had 3 bullets so that if a prisoners tried to get to them, the guards would shoot all 3 and they’d not get a working gun.

So on this guys first week… new in stay in their cells for a week or so…. so he finally comes out into the big yard. Standing in a group, a guy on his left reaches around him and knocks him down by knifing the guy on the other side of him. He looks up and the guard on the catwalk shoots the guy on his left

We discovered after I left that another group of prisoners had been tunneling under the chapel building trying to get out.

That would have had to be a LONG tunnel to work, I would imagine.

They had a really little guy who was supposedly going into the broom closet to nap, but in fact was going through the floor… well they had a LONG time to work… when your sentence is “5 years to life”

“5 to life” means that once there, depending on your crime and what kind of a prisoner you were, at some point the penal commission would “Set” you time… a 5 or 10 or… whatever
