NOTE: “W. A. Gabrielson” (William A. Gabrielson) was Chief of Police for the Honolulu Police Department between 1932 and 1946. The inscription on this portrait photograph was made out to him probably by a member of the publicity staff at 20th Century-Fox, as neither the “Sidney Toler” signature nor the writing style does match other examples by the actor’s hand. The inscribed date of November 28, 1938, indicates that this was meant as a gesture of publicity for Sidney Toler’s first film as Charlie Chan, “Charlie Chan in Honolulu,” which was probably in its final stages of production at the time. A stamp on the rear of the photograph reads: “PORTRAIT BY WINIFRED GAIL,” who was a prominent photographer in Hollywood at that time.
