Rush: Good evening, Matt!
Rush: How are you this evening?
Matt1: Hello Rush!
Matt1: Very good, thnx….u?
Rush: Not too bad, thank you…!
Rush: Getting used to coler weather.
Rush: colder
Matt1: Brrr….My blood has thinned out
Rush: 🙂
Rush: I guess mine is still thick enough!
Matt1: lol
Rush: As long as the wind isn’t blowing!
mda19083 has joined this room
Matt1: Thats rough
Rush: MDA!
Rush: WELCOME!
Matt1: Hello MDA!
mda19083: Chilly greetings from the Philadelphia suburbs!
Rush: Yes!
Rush: A little chill in the air in my area, too…
mda19083: I had to break out my snow shovel the other day!
Rush: I am learning about that tool!
Hawaii_Steve has joined this room
Rush: I also got a good snow blower for the driveway.
Matt1: Alohaaaaa, Steve!
mda19083: First snow of the season – only 3 inches though!
Hawaii_Steve: Aloha amigos from the Land of Chan !!!
Rush: Aloha, Steve!
mda19083: hello steve
Rush: You made it tonight!
Rush: How did the new job go?
Hawaii_Steve: Hello Rush, Matt, and MDA. How’z it?
Hawaii_Steve: I start the new job in 2 hours.
Rush: Well, we have two of us from warm climes, and two from the cold so far!
Matt1: Congrats!
Hawaii_Steve: Thanks gang!
Rush: Evening work!
Hawaii_Steve: Yes sir.
Rush: Good, as you will have the daytime off.
Hawaii_Steve: I like it. We shall see.
Rush: Yes!
Rush: Is it local?
Hawaii_Steve: Yes, it’s local.
Rush: Good!
mda19083: I am looking forward to tonight’s film
Hawaii_Steve: Oh, I can only stay for about a half hour. I just wanted to say “hi”.
Rush: I like this one, too!
Rush: The closest we will probably ever get to “Charlie Chan carries On.”
Hawaii_Steve: for tonight’s film, please watch for the scene shot on Bishop Street, downtown Honolulu.
Rush: Happy to have you here, Steve…if only for 30 or so minutes!
Rush: The driving scene?
Hawaii_Steve: I’ve been doing a bit of research on the Chan films.
MIke in DC has joined this room
Rush: Mike! Welcome!
Hawaii_Steve: Correct me if I am wrong, but …
mda19083: hello mike
MIke in DC: Buenas Tardes!
Matt1: Hello Mike!
Hawaii_Steve: Hi Mike.
Rush: Yes…?
mda19083: any ideas why Fox decided to make this film
Hawaii_Steve: … none of the Chan films were ever re-issued in movie theaters.
Rush: HM.
Hawaii_Steve: Universal re-issued the classic monster movies into the 1950s.
Rush: I guess they only reappeared later as “matanees or on early TV.
MIke in DC: I’ve never seen a Chan in a real movie theater…
Rush: Mike, I believe that they felt they could reach a new market.
Hawaii_Steve: Monogram, if I am correct, was the first studio to issues their catalogue to TV. As early as 1948.
Rush: All of the countries south of the border as well as Spain itself.
Rush: Yes, steve, I believe you are correct.
Hawaii_Steve: I did. Somewhere around 1970 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
Rush: Yes.
Rush: Also, in 1968, a host of Fox chan movies were presented at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.
Hawaii_Steve: Believe it or not, while Monogram was release the theatercial Chans in theaters, they were also releasing the early Toler films to TV, circa 1948.
Hawaii_Steve: I’m still research the Walker Ctr, but they followed the MoMA in NYC.
Rush: Mike, I have seen a couple of Chan movies in a small theater in the LA area.
Hawaii_Steve: After TV, correct Rush?
Rush: It was really fun to watch with a live audience reaction present!
Rush: Yes.
Hawaii_Steve: I found some ads from the Vista theater in L.A. They ran a detective film series in the 1980s, but no Chan films.
Rush: BUT, the Fox movies were released especially for TV, I believe, at the same time: “Warner 7 Arts”
Rush: I think that might have been when Warner got ahold of “The Black camel.”
Mariann has joined this room
Hawaii_Steve: Did the Old-Town Music Hall, El Segundo, screen a few Chans?
Rush: Mariann!
Rush: Welcome!!!
Rush: How are you tonight?
Matt1: Hello Mariann!
Rush: Yes, Syeve.
Rush: A great little theater!
Rush: (Steve)
Rush: I still receive theit bi-yearly program in the mail.
mda19083: hello mariann
Hawaii_Steve: The FOX Chans began playing on TV around 1964. Before that, during the ’50s, it was Monogram Chans.
Mariann has left this room
MIke in DC: I’ve been around several places that have done runs of old films (Thin Man, Wong, etc.) but never stumbled across a Chan-fest.
Rush: Yes?
Rush: So, I suppose that the Fox films were re-released to play in theaters.
Hawaii_Steve: MOMA was the first museum to show the Fox Chans in an educational setting. All prints came from WB/7 Arts.
Rush: Also TV, probably.
Rush: II see the “Warner 7 Arts” Chan movie stills on eBay a lot.
Rush: Also, Chan was “in the air” in 1967/1968!
mda19083: I believe that the Chan Chat Room is an “educational setting”
Hawaii_Steve: No, they were not. It started at the MOMA. In the mid-60s, the Chan films were on TV. No theater manager, in his right mind, would should a film in a theater that was being shown on TV for free.
Rush: “He” made an apparance at Expo ’67 in Montreal.
Hawaii_Steve: Again, after MOMA.
Rush: Also, there is a VW TV ad with “Chan” from that same time period!
Rush: The actor from
The Millionaire” TV show played the part.
Hawaii_Steve: The Warner 7 Arts stills are for television release, not in theaters.
Rush: AH.
Rush: I had thought so.
Hawaii_Steve: The VW ad came “after” the TV release.
Rush: Yes.
Rush: I am thinking 1968ish.
Rush: I actually recall seeing it as a teen.
Hawaii_Steve: Whoever controled the Chans during the ’60s, wwas very strict about where to release the FOX films. It was all on TV.
Rush: There was definitely a Chan “happening” at that time.
Hawaii_Steve: From 1979 to 1995, I lived and worked in L.A. I never saw a Chan film at a revival theater.
Hawaii_Steve: Rush, didn’t you a Chan film at Old Town in El Segundo?
Rush: I was definitely out of the loop during that time. I don’t recall any at the couple of art theaters in the San Diego area at the time, either, though.
Rush: Yes. a couple of times. Great experience!
Hawaii_Steve: The Chan revival, big-time revival, started at MOMA. Then it caught on at Expo ’67.
Rush: the first time I met some of the Keye Luke Family.
Rush: Also related to Edwin Luke.
Hawaii_Steve: Rush, now you got it.
Rush: I guess so…
Rush: 🙂
Hawaii_Steve: since 1979, I have kept a journal of all media-related events I have attended.
Rush: WOW!
Rush: That’s GREAT!
Hawaii_Steve: With the assistance of he Minnesota Historical Society, I am tracking my childhood movie going experience.
Rush: That would make something of an interesting book!
Hawaii_Steve: My earliest note about Chan films is from 1967. I wrote something in Maltin’s movie guide book.
Rush: really!
Rush: NICE!!!
Hawaii_Steve: Also, I have one of the original Chan comic books from circa 1964. I bought in brand new in ’64.
Rush: You contributed it in ’67?
Hawaii_Steve: Yes, I am an old guy.
Matt1: btw, Steve, I enjoyed your Facebook post…So, you’re a “Bea Boy”?
Rush: Well….
Rush: You were a young teen then!
Hawaii_Steve: Matt, LOL !!!! You’re the best. You’re in my will.
Rush: 🙂
Matt1: lol….Made me smile
Hawaii_Steve: Matt, I’m leaving you all my 8-track cassettes of Don Ho.

Matt1: Hello Len!
Rush: Len!
Louise: Slow getting here. Had to burn my popcorn first!
Rush: WELCOME!
Rush: I hope that his evening finds you well and happy!
mda19083: I love Don Ho’s Tiny Bubbles
mda19083: hello len and louise
Hawaii_Steve: But seriously, folks. I am very surprise that FOX never re-issued their Chan films to the theaters.
MIke in DC: Hey Len!
Louise: Cold but cozy here on the eastcoast
Len Freeman: Hi fiends
Rush: I would agree, Steve.
Len Freeman: that’s FRIENDS

mda19083: hrllo hounder

mda19083: hello
Louise: typo city today
DanVenture has joined this room
Rush: I would guess you met him, steve!
Hawaii_Steve: He would swear at the audience if they requested the song.
Matt1: Hello Dan!
Rush: DV!
Rush: Good evening to YOU!
Rush: Welcome!
mda19083: steve – Sinatra didn’t care for my way
DanVenture: Evening, Matt, Rush! See, I have at least ONE New Year’s Resolution that I am keeping!
Rush: yes?
mda19083: DV is in the house
DanVenture: INDEED, MDA!
MIke in DC: Hey DV
Hawaii_Steve: I heard that Sinatra throw something at the audience one time at the Universal Amp Theater.
Rush: Yes?
DanVenture: Now, if you can tell me where we are video-wise, I’d be happy to know.
hounder: she had a good day so we went to town. sh’s in bed now.
Rush: 10 minutes to showtime….
Rush: “Eran Trece”
Rush: Good to hear, Hounder!
Louise: Get ready to practice your high school Spanish
DanVenture: WOW! On time, even. I am feeling lucky.
Rush: Yes, louise!
Len Freeman: Looking back at some of the earlier conversation about seeing Chan films in theaters — I caught the first Roland Winters at an overnight stay in Barstow CA, in 1965 on a trip across country
Len Freeman: I had no idea who Winters was, had never seen any of his on TV before that
hounder: lol@louise. my high school spanish was never this good.
mda19083: DV – make sure you play the lottery then
Rush: Great to hear, Len! That might make a nive tidbit for next year’s CCF Newsletter!
Rush: I would love to hear that story.
Louise: Never saw a Chan movie in the theatre
DanVenture: Thx, MD!
Rush: Few of us have, Louise!
Hawaii_Steve: Len, if this is true, you should be able to find the newspaper ad for the film.
Matt1: Cued!
DanVenture: Sadly, Utah doesn’t have a lottery. Maybe you can recommend another? 😉
Rush: I was mentioning my several opportunities at the Old Time Music Hall in El Segundo, CA.
MIke in DC: The DC lottery has an online game, I think.
mda19083: DV – how about OTB?
Louise: I remeber last year or 2 years ago the California people were talking about seeing Chan movies on the big screen
Rush: 6 1/2 minutes…
Louise: cued
MIke in DC: We easterners have been deprived, Louise
Louise: yes Mike
Matt1: We talked about going to one as a group here one year
mda19083: cued here – I had 3 years of high school Spanish – many years ago
Hawaii_Steve: Louise & Len, we’re talking about FOX re-issuing the Chans during the ’30s and 40s. They never did, based on my research.
Len Freeman: Cued here.. Lindsay is joining me for this one… I think Manual Arbo does a great Chan… only wish he[d made more.
Louise: We only had French in my all girls highschool
mda19083: oui oui
MIke in DC: I learned German, then picked up some Spanish from travels
Rush: “Eran Trece” is found on the “CC in Shanghai” Fox disc.
Rush: n the “Special features.”
hounder: i had 2 in high school and another in college. still can’t speak it.
mda19083: I can order from a tapas bar menu
Rush: I had four semesters in HS, and it comes back at times.

Louise: Thanks GS, it is a fun show
Godwinshelley2: The others were good too!!
Len Freeman: Hosta luego alagathors (sp?) .. see you later alligator … my only spanish recollection from HS
Rush: 75 seconds…
Godwinshelley2: Len are you leaving?
Rush: 60 seconds…
eran angel y foxx: Lost baseballs may be deducible. Consult your agent and tax professional.
Len Freeman: Nope —
Rush: 50 seconds…
eran angel y foxx: Cinquenta!!
Rush: 40 seconds…
hounder: buenas noches
MIke in DC: Eran doce at the moment
Len Freeman: just reminiscijg

Rush: 20…
MIke in DC: *munches nachos*
eran angel y foxx: Wond’rin who you been missing, Lenny?
Rush: 15…
Rush: 10…
Rush: 5…
Rush: GO!!!
Matt1: <GONG>
eran angel y foxx: The longest day i live, it’s only Chan, i’ll be thinking of.
Rush: Title….
Rush: Music….
Rush: Cast….
Matt1: Inspector Duff!
eran angel y foxx: Charlie Chan i (and Buddy Holly)’ll be thinking of!
mda19083: love the music
Louise: some hints of the future theme music
Hawaii_Steve: Well, I’ve got to get ready for work. Adios amigos and amigets. Talk with you soon. Enjoy the film.
MIke in DC: The “standard” music is hidden in there…
Rush: Scotlan Yard
MIke in DC: Thanks for all of the info Steve!
Godwinshelley2: Why does Charlie get the LAST place in billing??
hounder: love the background card for the credits
eran angel y foxx: Hawaii?
Len Freeman: Adios HS
Rush: yes, Hounder, mee too!
Godwinshelley2: HS – bye
Rush: One of the clues in the movie!
eran angel y foxx: That’s what they told Ringo.
eran angel y foxx: Jajajajajaja!!
eran angel y foxx: Chino CA?
Hawaii_Steve has left this room
Matt1: Oland
Len Freeman: Notice dad in pic
Rush: The family photo.
Godwinshelley2: So anyone with alot of Spanish – is there a British accent to this Spanish?
Rush: Seen in a number of Chan movies.
Rush: That I cannot say, GS!
DanVenture: Wow. My spanish better than I thought. I am catching every word…
DanVenture: I’d better get to the bottom of this.
Rush: When I transcribed the dialogue a long time ago with a native Spanish speaker, he never let on to any attempt at an English accent.
Godwinshelley2: When we were in Germany, I would watch their television and the German I understood best was spoken with an “American” accent
Rich Maine: Inspector Duff returns
Rush: Yes, Rich.
hounder: i’m catching a few words but not enough to make sense of the sentences.
Rush: He begins the investigation, and Charlie Chan CARRIES ON later.
MIke in DC: My amateur ear says this is more Mexican Spanish than “Spanish Spanish”
Rush: Yes, Hounder.
Rush: That could be so, Mike.
Godwinshelley2: That is understandable, Mike, given that it is a Hollywood film
Rush: There is a difference.
Louise: fake beard
Godwinshelley2: Just wondered if they wanted to make a distinction between American and British characters with some kind of accents
Rush: it could be, GS.
eran angel y foxx: My Spanish is poor (i was adopted by a Latino family past age of easy language apprehension) but / so this is great.
Godwinshelley2: Does make me wonder why Nazi’s always have British accents in our films
Rush: Possibly the way they did it was to use more of a Spanish accent?
Rush: That is a good question, though.
eran angel y foxx: THESE guys’ Spanish seems VERY good. A detective should be assigned, to find some facts.
Rush: 🙂
Rush: Nice bag.
Godwinshelley2: That is a BIG hat for that guy
Rush: And…a nice hat.
Rush: Yes!
Rush: maybe to make him appear taller!
Rich Maine: Yes quite large
Len Freeman: Like Behind that Curtain, this was made before they used music in sound films.. the initial thought was that music had just been a filler, and that people would not want just dialogue as if they’d been in the room.
Rush: Shakey.
hounder: lol. i catch a few more words with my eyes closed.
Rush: had a nervous breakdown.
Rush: Good work, Hounder!
Louise: my subtitles don’t work so I am just getting the ambiance of it all
eran angel y foxx: hounder: you might catch words, but someone might lift your fur.
eran angel y foxx: Headline in the Daily Blatt: FUR STOLE!!
MIke in DC: I keep mentally comparing these scenes to “Murder Cruise”
mda19083: did someone say white fox fur?
Rush: I watched a lot of the Rose Parade this year on Telemundo whenever NBC went to commercials.
hounder: lol
Rush: MDA: 🙂
hounder: cool rush
Len Freeman: RU on the Fox disk Louise?
Rush: Yes…it worked!
eran angel y foxx: How did those glasses not just fall off? I know about the pince-nez, but them’s is ridiculous.
Rush: Maybe excessive sweating caused them to slip off, Angel!
eran angel y foxx: THAT’S where this flashlight came from!
eran angel y foxx: He’s not a senator from West Virginia these days, is he?
eran angel y foxx: A likely-looking crew.
mda19083: angel 🙂
Rush: I was just thinking that to Spanish speakers, the English accent would not be noticable, just as the Mexican or Cuban vs. Spain accent for English speakers would not really be an issue.
Rush: His heart!
eran angel y foxx: They’re ALL criminal lawyers in New York.
Rich Maine: Poppers!
Rush: Yes!
eran angel y foxx: Indeed!
MIke in DC: lol Rich
eran angel y foxx: “What is hip?”!!
Godwinshelley2: That was the issue with “Die Hard” in other languages – they didn’t “get” that Bruce Willis was fooled by Hans Gruber when he used his “American” accent
Rush: Duff will grill him when he recovers!
eran angel y foxx: I’ll bet you did.
Rush: Yes, that would make sense, GS.
eran angel y foxx: The rest of the story will be on Page Six.
Rush: this lady is something of a character throughout the film!
Louise: GS: fun point
Rush: I am still on page 3, Angel!
eran angel y foxx: All but one. The 39 Elephants were gonna be featured in a film by that Hitchcock guy but—
Rush: Fourth trip around the world!
mda19083: he is a gigolo
Rush: Quite the traveler!
Rush: Seems so, MDA!
eran angel y foxx: Hairy Potter.
Rush: 🙂
mda19083: a woman gigolo is an adventuress
eran angel y foxx: mda, THANK you! I have a neighbor i needed to describe!
eran angel y foxx: I’ll bet he is.
Rush: Get the medicine ready…
eran angel y foxx: I’ll bet you will.
mda19083: angel – anytime
eran angel y foxx: Hairy Potter!
eran angel y foxx: He looks kinda like The Chief from Get Smart, to us.
eran angel y foxx: Edward Platt, i think.
Rush: HM.
mda19083: angel – correct
Rush: (Cough…)
Len Freeman has left this room
Rush: Note how Max the gangster softens later in the film!
eran angel y foxx: These guys all have Nixon hairstyles: carpet top center, recessions both sides.
eran angel y foxx: Mr. Decker, you know a Mr. Black?
eran angel y foxx: They warned Miranda.]
Rush: Max Minchin will be a lot different while performing at the party later!
eran angel y foxx: He’ll have poppers.
Rush: Angel: :0 to the above.
eran angel y foxx: Love that fur!!
Rich Maine: Oh yes he will!
mda19083: fox fur
Rush: Another Character, here!
Rush: he goes a bit overboard later….
Rush: Note the bow in his hat band it to the rear of the hat.
Rush: It seems it was a style at one time.
Rich Maine: Yeah the bow is too precious
Rush: Charlie Chan wore a hat with the bow the same way once.
eran angel y foxx: That IS foppy. I’m reversing my own band in this instant.
eran angel y foxx: You’d think Duff Beer would want some cork.
eran angel y foxx: The whole world is waiting for HER.
MIke in DC: (and Chan)
Louise: Es muy possible.
Rush: “The Inspector’s favorite beer.”
eran angel y foxx: Uh-oh. Here we go.
eran angel y foxx: Off on a 20-year run of aphorisms. We love it!
eran angel y foxx: Her eyes don’t match. She looks Piccasso-y.
eran angel y foxx: Picasso-y.
hounder: nice shadows on the wall
Rush: I think I know what you mean, Angel.
Len Freeman has joined this room
Rush: WB, Len!
Len Freeman: smile
Rush: I am SO happy that we have this film available to us!
Len Freeman: Amen
Rush: Crumpled the hat!
Rush: yes, Len.
MIke in DC: He can afford a new one, Rush…
Rush: That hat will never be the same!
Rush: “Niza”
Rush: (“Nice”)
hounder: donde esta niza?
eran angel y foxx: The technical quality of this film seems at least on par with the early ’30s works, and the preservation seems superior.
MIke in DC: Travel music sounds like Mendelssohn
Rich Maine: Thatsa nice
Rush: Agreed, Angel!
eran angel y foxx: One cinematographer down.
hounder: but the way h\
Rush: Plants the gun to make it look like suicide.
MIke in DC: una lata?
Rush: BUT, where did the bullet enter the body?
eran angel y foxx: Drama queen?
hounder: but the way the hand was placed on the gun wouldn’t leave prints on the trigger
eran angel y foxx: Everyone faints on hearing the news.
Rush: “De nada.”
eran angel y foxx: D.N. to U2.
eran angel y foxx: It would be seething without cops.
Rush: That couple has GREAT bits throughout.
eran angel y foxx: You’re a lotta help.
MIke in DC: <lata>
eran angel y foxx: I’ll bet those glasses were glued on. For duration of production.
Rush: 🙂
Len Freeman: Next one to die?
Rush: Watch out….
eran angel y foxx: The old “get ’em all together” thing, before it was old.
Rush: Music builds….
Rush: I guess it got her in the head.
eran angel y foxx: THE SHADOW NOSE!
Matt1: <lata>
mda19083: cue the Spanish can
MIke in DC: It’s in!
Rush: Speaking of which, I have recently taken to purchasing an occasional “Shadow” pulp magazine. A joy to read.
Matt1: per Google
eran angel y foxx: La lata = the can
Rush: AH!
Rush: Boarding the train…
MIke in DC: We are multi-lingual with the effects!
eran angel y foxx: Lotta furs in this flick.
mda19083: Matt & angel – thanks for the translation
Rush: YES.
MIke in DC: Chinchilla perhaps?
Rush: Nice stock shot.
eran angel y foxx: I’ll chin anybody.
Rush: A lot of good ones through the film.
Rush: travel shots…
Rush: Hagia Sophia…
eran angel y foxx: What’s happened to the crowds, since?
Rush: Hong kong…
eran angel y foxx: Punji Punji?
mda19083: they really are going around the world
Len Freeman: wonderful travel shots
Rush: Funny here!
Rush: Yes, Len!
Rush: Love them!
eran angel y foxx: She washed that glass all night & couldn’t get out the stains.
Rush: With their luck, Venice was “flooded” when they got there!
eran angel y foxx: There are NO ruins without ME.
Len Freeman: bad joke
eran angel y foxx: She has a brute cellar at home.
Rush:
eran angel y foxx: Her millions have kept her from real romance.
eran angel y foxx: Rush: was that a drone photo?
mda19083: is she loaded?
eran angel y foxx: She modeled for the Sphinx.
eran angel y foxx: Loaded but lonely.
mda19083: angel 🙂
Rush: a detail from a still, I think.
Rush: More funny stuff here.
Rush: And, now, the romance buds…a little…
eran angel y foxx: Dolores?
Rush: Things get serious soon…and dangerous!
Rush: “Jim Maynard!”
Rush: Not a good move!
eran angel y foxx: The Hong Kongians speak Spanish as well as she speaks Chinese.
Rush:
Rush: (From the American version)
eran angel y foxx: DAMN! I woulda circled the globe for that globe!
eran angel y foxx: St Louis!!
Rush: “Honolulu”
mda19083: hawaii
Louise: That surfing scene is familiar
DanVenture: Hawaiian Eye…
eran angel y foxx: I like the one to our left.
mda19083: surf’s up
Rush: And….finally…. CHAN!
MIke in DC: Hey isn’t that the same scene from Black Camel?
eran angel y foxx: CC?
Rich Maine: At last, Charlie appears!
Len Freeman: CC
Rush: Not exactly….
Rush: Maybe the set?
eran angel y foxx: I WANT THAT ROOM!
Rush: NICE set.
MIke in DC: No…I meant the stock surfers
eran angel y foxx: Estoy aqui!!
Rush: I agree, Angel!
Matt1: CC looks a little different from family pic
Rush: Duff is at HPD to see chan.
Rush: Yes, matt!
eran angel y foxx: Mike: Stock surfers been taking a beating YTD: down in a range of 1000 points so far.
mda19083: 42 minutes in and he appears
Rush: Interesting that Oland “appears” in this film!
eran angel y foxx: DEFINITELY filmed live on location.
MIke in DC: He’s about an hour ahead of last weeks movie
Godwinshelley2: Is this same back projection used in other Chan films
Rush: Bishop Street in Honolulu.
eran angel y foxx: WOW!!!!!
Rush: Steve told us to look for this.
Godwinshelley2: (not counting the English version of this one)
Rush: Note the wider brim on chan’s hat.
