Hello, Matt!

Good evening!

01-05 18:46

Matt:

Happy New Year!

01-05 18:46

I hope that you and Steve have had a great New Year so far.

Hawaii_Steve:

Aloha Matt.  Good afternoon.  It’s 2:46 p.m.

01-05 18:47

Matt:

7:47 here in Florida

01-05 18:47

Hawaii_Steve:

This New Year Eve, there was one firework explosion.  Only one person was killed compared to six in 2025.

01-05 18:47

Matt:

I was in bed by 10:30PM

01-05 18:48

Rush:

I had forgotten which Fox disc contains our movie…it is on the “Monte Carlo” disc.

01-05 18:48

Rush:

Wow, Steve!

I actually didn’t hear any fireworks go off in my area this year.

01-05 18:49

Hawaii_Steve:

Most of my Chan DVDs are in storage.  I don’t know which disc tonight’s film is on.

01-05 18:50

Rush:

Do you have the Fox DVDs handy still?

01-05 18:50

Hawaii_Steve:

Because the day is open for business, I will be checking out soon.

01-05 18:50

Rush:

Okay.

01-05 18:51

Rush:

Again, it’s side two of the “Monte Carlo” disc, just in case.

01-05 18:52

Hawaii_Steve:

You are correct.  I just found the DVD Monte Carlo.

01-05 18:52

Rush:

01-05 18:53

Rush:

Loading mine into the player now…

01-05 18:54

Hawaii_Steve:

For me, I find it difficult to sit through Behind Curtain.  I have errands to run.

I will be leaving shortly.  So sorry.

01-05 18:55

Rush:

And, thank you, again, Steve for the DVD you sent to me!  I received it in today’s mail.

Understood, Steve.

01-05 18:55

Hawaii_Steve:

It a disc of the original VHS recording from 1989.  I hope that you enjoy it.

01-05 18:55

01-05 19:05

Rush:

TYSM for the link, GS!

01-05 19:05

Hawaii_Steve:

The Thin Man series is wonderful.  Probably the best detective series produced during the golden age of Hollywood.

01-05 19:05

Rush:

I agree, Steve!

01-05 19:05

Matt:

Cued here!

01-05 19:05

Rush:

I DVRd the showings on TCM.

01-05 19:06

While living in the L.A. area, during the 1980s, I go to meet Myrna Loy.  When I asked her for her autograph, she responded with “not that again.”  She was sweet.

01-05 19:09

Rush:

How WONDERFUL, Steve!

Did she give you the autograph?

01-05 19:09

Rich in Maine:

01-05 19:19

Godwinshelley:

So – for our cookbook – should we divide the recipes by country – or by appetizers, entrees, etc?

01-05 19:20

Louise:

GS: how about the manner of death???

01-05 19:20

Rush:

Country based on the movie?

01-05 19:20

Louise:

*just kidding

01-05 19:20

tenman:

Was out for a min, explaining to my snap buds about silent/sound films.

01-05 19:20

Rush:

AH!

01-05 19:21

Rush:

Start with the concept of “black and white,” TM!

01-05 19:21

Godwinshelley:

There seemed to be some consensus that each film would have a description – with maybe a suggested list of recipes (found later in the book) to use while watching that film

01-05 19:21

Rich in Maine:

by course GS, so apps, entrees, desserts

01-05 19:21

Louise:

and drinks

01-05 19:21

tenman:

God, I would think by course, as I’ll look for desserts lol. Of course the text should contain the relevant movie info

01-05 19:22

Godwinshelley:

Tenman – there is a great documentary on Hitchcock and his TWO versions of “Blackmail” – one silent and one sound – both coming out around the same year

01-05 19:23

tenman:

Yes, I like the idea of the film descriptions/food connections for people to prepare ahead of a viewing!

Interesting, GS. I’ll have to check it out!

01-05 19:23

Rush:

Eve…DON’T MARRY HIM!!!”

01-05 19:24

Godwinshelley:

So this films could have food from London, India, Persia, San Francisco?

01-05 19:24

Rush:

India?

01-05 19:25

Godwinshelley:

Where does she live before she leaves for the desert?

Egypt?

01-05 19:25

Rush:

Good question.

01-05 19:25

Louise:

So many meals from England and their bad food!

01-05 19:26

Rush:

01-05 19:26

Godwinshelley:

Rush – are the descriptions you provide on your webpage written by you or copied from another place – could I use them in the cookbook?

01-05 19:27

Rush:

Of course!

India was just mentioned.

01-05 19:28

Rush:

A BOUNDER!

01-05 19:30

Rush:

Our old friend who appears as “Lake” in “Charlie Chan in London”…

…and as a ship’s steward in “Charlie Chan at the Race Track.”

01-05 19:31

Rush:

TYSM….Matt…

01-05 19:32

Godwinshelley:

Does it seem slow because there is no background music – or is it just really slow?

01-05 19:32

Rush:

A bit of both, GS.

01-05 19:33

tenman:

I think a large part of it was that sound was so novel they felt voices filled it up

01-05 19:33

Rush:

There we go…they are sailing to India.

You were correct.

01-05 19:34

Rush:

So…India is IN!

Some of my favorite food!

01-05 19:34

Louise:

Not sure they eat in India

01-05 19:34

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, good night

01-05 19:34

Godwinshelley:

So Chicken Tikka -is one of our recipes – it’s both “Indian” AND British

Rush:

01-05 19:35

01-05 19:36

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

No, GS.  Film music isn’t really in my line of work so Chan/Opera was more a labor of love

01-05 19:36

No problem about being late!

01-05 19:36

Godwinshelley:

OK – just wondered – I could pull up a list of films with some possible operas if you decide to check it out

01-05 19:37

hounder:

got invited to a party.

01-05 19:37

Rush:

“No one ever knows what lies behind the curtain…”

Very good, Hounder!

01-05 19:38

Godwinshelley:

This occured to me as I watched “Night at the Opera” with the Marx brothers

01-05 19:38

01-05 19:42

Godwinshelley:

But not by a Chan

01-05 19:42

Rush:

One of the two men talking in the earlier scene.

01-05 19:42

Godwinshelley:

Guess we will need a chapter on the different teas – british, indian, chinese, etc.

01-05 19:43

Rush:

The beverages.

01-05 19:43

Godwinshelley:

The cocktail section will be quite extensive

01-05 19:43

Rush:

There are some exact mixtures mentioned.

01-05 19:44

Godwinshelley:

I have a copy of Victor Sen Yung’s cookbook

01-05 19:52

Rush:

She could divorce due to “Irreconcilable Differences”…to the max!!!

01-05 19:53

Charlie Angel:

Max doesn’t want her either.

01-05 19:53

Rush:

This must be the part of India that later became Pakistan.

01-05 19:53

Matt:

Looks like a Space Balls helmet

01-05 19:54

Charlie Angel:

I LOVE those beaded curtains!  Got just one set now, get lots of compliments on them but some strands have worn out & fallen.  Gotta order 2 or 3!!

01-05 19:55

Rush:

01-05 19:55

Charlie Angel:

Charlie Angel:

01-05 19:56

Austinchanfan:

ooh love tandoori chicken

01-05 19:56

Rush:

For all its faults, I have to say the locations and the quality of the scene shots are very nice!

01-05 19:57

Godwinshelley:

And the location shooting in San Francisco is nice too

01-05 19:57

Rush:

And the outdoor locations made with sound equipment back in 1929 is actually pretty amazing.

01-05 19:57

Rich in Maine:

back, laptop did update!

01-05 19:58

Louise:

Ugh, these people are awful

01-05 19:58

Charlie Angel:

Whilst wasting time luxuriously Searching old-movie stuff, i learned that the Sarah Siddon referenced in “All About [REDACTED]” was a real thespian!

01-05 19:58

Austinchanfan:

better quality than the coconuts film I watched on you tube’

01-05 19:58

Charlie Angel:

Why don’t they all just cut left sooner?

01-05 19:58

Rush:

Rich, those updates can come up at the worst times!

01-05 19:58

Louise:

How about tandoori vegetables for the vegans?

01-05 19:59

Rich in Maine:

of course Rush, but internet was wacky until I did it.

01-05 19:59

Charlie Angel:

I feel it there too.  But she has such prominent, ah, punjis.

01-05 19:59

Godwinshelley:

I’ll make a note – and anyone want to try out this recipe and report back?

01-05 19:59

Rush:

I see, Rich.

01-05 20:00

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

liar liar pants on fire

01-05 20:00

Rush:

By the way, the recipes above look pretty good.

01-05 20:00

tenman:

I just take any recipe ansd sub out seitan or some other meat sub for the meat in it. It’s pretty simple,. and by addiing a touch more garlic, soy sauce, and a spash of liquid smoke, no one would ever know the diff!

01-05 20:00

Austinchanfan:

yep and I enjoy Indian cusine’

01-05 20:00

Charlie Angel:

Dueling juleps.

01-05 20:00

Godwinshelley:

I’d try the recipe with cauliflower

01-05 20:01

tenman:

I make a great palak paneer

01-05 20:01

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

how about matar paneer?

ah.  or palak paneer, 10man

01-05 20:01

Charlie Angel:

Tenman, you have the secret somewhere in there.  Watch for aircraft and get a lead box.  Then put the secret in the bread box.

01-05 20:02

Rush:

The shaky hand.

01-05 20:02

Austinchanfan:

I like palak paneer

01-05 20:02

Rush:

Right on cue…

01-05 20:02

Godwinshelley:

Anyone who wants to submit a possible recipe, send it to me at mcnealb@hotmail.com

01-05 20:02

tenman:

Do we know what punji means?

01-05 20:02

Rich in Maine:

I confess! I did it! just stop singing

01-05 20:02

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

I think it’s sanskrit for “out of tune” tenman

01-05 20:03

Charlie Angel:

An aeroplane at his disposal.
Just call it a dumpster, your Lardship; we’re all co-conspirators here.

01-05 20:06

Rush:

01-05 20:06

Rich in Maine:

The bell tolls for thee

01-05 20:06

Charlie Angel:

25¢/axle, Axel.

01-05 20:07

Charlie Angel:

The same BORRRRRING moon.

01-05 20:07

Charlie Angel:

He wants a shoulder blade stake.

01-05 20:08

Rush:

01-05 20:08

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

ok.  this is lame dialog, but the acting doesn’t help it at all

01-05 20:08

Charlie Angel:

He’ll be wife-rife for life.

01-05 20:08

Rush:

Odd shot there.

Their heads barely above the bottom of the image!

01-05 20:08

01-05 20:11

Rush:

Horses get spooked!

01-05 20:11

Charlie Angel:

01-05 20:13

tenman:

I spy with my little eye something taht starts with a B

01-05 20:13

Rush:

His first onscreen words.

01-05 20:13

Godwinshelley:

So what drink was Karloff making?

01-05 20:13

Charlie Angel:

NOTICE the “V” in “XIV” is FLOPPED (heavy stroke should be at left, not right).

01-05 20:14

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

let’s have a drink and sing a few choruses of “pungi pungi”

01-05 20:14

01-05 20:15

Charlie Angel:

That’s SHERLOCK HOLMES’ SLIPPER, minus the GOOD STUFF!

01-05 20:15

Rush:

The long reach of Scotland Yard…

01-05 20:16

tenman:

Yes, punji punji does seem to eb a drinking song!

01-05 20:16

Charlie Angel:

They’re gonna grab him by his very attractive KNEES.

01-05 20:17

Rush:

“I order obeyment!”

01-05 20:17

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

I am obeymenting, sahib

01-05 20:17

Charlie Angel:

Just order more SAND, Mustafa.

01-05 20:18

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

perhaps the learned gentlemen will go pound sand

01-05 20:18

Charlie Angel:

I wouldn’t wanna be in HIS dress.

01-05 20:18

Rush:

Why would he need sign language?  He heard Col. Beetham’s clap.

01-05 20:18

Charlie Angel:

MnR:  It IS to be DEVOUTLY HOPED.

01-05 20:19

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

de plane, boss.  de plane

01-05 20:19

Charlie Angel:

🤣

01-05 20:19

Rush:

M/R:

01-05 20:21

Godwinshelley:

Because usually when you say … “Can I explain – the killer is – …..” it doesn’t go well for you in Chan films

01-05 20:21

Rush:

Yes, GS!

01-05 20:21

Charlie Angel:

How many hounds had to dye for that SUIT?

01-05 20:21

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

she’s been eves dropping?

01-05 20:21

Godwinshelley:

So good thing he said not right now

01-05 20:21

Charlie Angel:

01-05 20:21

01-05 20:25

Rush:

01-05 20:25

Charlie Angel:

She rented a tent, she rented a tent, she rented she rented she rented a tent.  Get over it!

01-05 20:25

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

we are closer to Charlie’s big scene

01-05 20:25

Rush:

That little kid would be at least 96 years old today!

01-05 20:26

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

She was so upset she rent her tent in pieces

01-05 20:26

Charlie Angel:

😆😆😆😆😆😆

They can’t even spell CLAUS.

01-05 20:27

Rush:

01-05 20:27

Charlie Angel:

Clock running backwards!

01-05 20:27

Rush:

The ferry “Santa Clara” seen in the arrival scene.

01-05 20:27

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

outed at his lecture!  egad!

01-05 20:27

Rush:

Unhappy elevator customers!

01-05 20:28

Godwinshelley:

If she would just give the letter to the police, she wouldn’t have to worry about him following her

01-05 20:28

Charlie Angel:

OH!  I didn’t THINK Santa CLAUS was a ferry!

01-05 20:28

Rush:

She would have some nice things to tell about HIM as well!

01-05 20:28

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

dude, your acting is getting on Rachel’s nerves.  we’re even.

01-05 20:28

Matt:

That job must have it’s ups & downs

01-05 20:28

Rush:

01-05 20:28

Godwinshelley:

You can’t fool me – there ain’t no “Sanity Clause”

01-05 20:28

Rush:

01-05 20:28

Charlie Angel:

You’ve made your Marx here, GS!

01-05 20:29

Godwinshelley:

Ha

01-05 20:29

Rush:

I have to say, this film definitely spawns many choice jokes!

01-05 20:29

Charlie Angel:

“Eve” looks (here anyway) a little like Peggy Olson from Mad Men.

01-05 20:29

Rush:

“Can anyone work this elevator?”

01-05 20:29

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

we could use the Monogram “walking music” for this scene!

01-05 20:30

Rush:

Charlie Chan….finally!!!

E.L. Park.

01-05 20:30

Matt:

Pop!

01-05 20:30

Rich in Maine:

does the maid speak Chinese?

01-05 20:30

Godwinshelley:

Mike we MUST get that as a ring tone for when Rush calls us

01-05 20:30

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

Chinese cops!  Charile!

01-05 20:30

Charlie Angel:

LIVIA?  Livia SOPRANO?!!

01-05 20:31

Godwinshelley:

So Charlie is breaking and entering along with theft

01-05 20:31

Rich in Maine:

CC but no sons

01-05 20:31

Rush:

Not yet.

01-05 20:31

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

…yet, Rich.  No kids yet.

01-05 20:32

Charlie Angel:

Where, where?

01-05 20:32

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

Siri, call the Cosmopolitan Club

01-05 20:32

tenman:

I do thnk Charlie got far more screen time in Murder By Death than he does in this film!

01-05 20:33

Charlie Angel:

SHE’S gonna bring a COSMOPOLITAN CLUB of her own. With a lead slug in it.

01-05 20:33

Godwinshelley:

Bee n tbere

been there

01-05 20:33

Rush:

A familiar Chinatown corner?

01-05 20:33

Godwinshelley:

Very

01-05 20:33

Rush:

YES!

01-05 20:34

Louise:

always the matchmaker

01-05 20:34

Godwinshelley:

That “Walking Music” was used in Monogram films – so it’s probably public domain –

01-05 20:34

Rush:

Possible son?

No.

01-05 20:34

Charlie Angel:

You’d think “PUNJI PUNJI PUNJI” would have had time to get on every Victrola store’s outside speaker by now.

01-05 20:34

Rush:

He called him “Mr. Chan.”

01-05 20:34

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

Chop Suey Boogie

01-05 20:35

Charlie Angel:

Hotsy totsy INDEED!

01-05 20:35

Rush:

We see why E.L. Park was not signed to play Chan in any future films.

01-05 20:35

Godwinshelley:

Much like “Perry Mason” – so many murder mysteries are all about REPUTATION

01-05 20:35

Rush:

True, GS.

01-05 20:36

Charlie Angel:

INSPECTOR is presaging Mr.Chameleon, who had a similar and at least equally pedantic slogan.
   Saints preserve us!!

01-05 20:36

Godwinshelley:

Not sure what streeet that was

01-05 20:36

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

First source music in a Chan film.

…well, except for Pungi Pungi

01-05 20:36

Godwinshelley:

What about the Punji Punji song?

01-05 20:37

tenman:

Ther Mummu in an earlier adventure

01-05 20:37

Godwinshelley:

though not orchestral

01-05 20:37

Charlie Angel:

PPP will always be 1st 1st 1st in our Hartz.

01-05 20:37

tenman:

*mummy

01-05 20:37

Rush:

Look closely at the audience and you will see “Dr. Cream.”

01-05 20:37

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

Karloff rockin’ the turban

01-05 20:37

Rush:

“The desert gives, and the desert takes…away…”

01-05 20:38

Godwinshelley:

Rumor is that Karloff’s father may have been a Egyptian Diplomat

01-05 20:38

Charlie Angel:

Anything you can’t—UNWRAP—in here?

01-05 20:38

Louise:

applause

01-05 20:38

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

It’s never good when your father is “rumored” to be…anyone…

01-05 20:38

Charlie Angel:

PAID AUDIENCE

01-05 20:38

Austinchanfan:

good film

01-05 20:38

Godwinshelley:

Did he rent that tux for this event – can’t imagine packing that in his camel luggage

01-05 20:39

Charlie Angel:

GS, you’ve got the thread of something there.

01-05 20:39

Rush:

There he is!

01-05 20:39

Godwinshelley:

back to bad hats again

01-05 20:39

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

Dr. Cream…right behind Eve

01-05 20:39

Rush:

Dr. Cream in the house….

01-05 20:39

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

Eve..Cairo?

01-05 20:39

Charlie Angel:

She’s a swell flapper.  What’s under the flaps?

01-05 20:40

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

She doesn’t flip her flaps, Charlie

01-05 20:40

Rush:

M/R…she’s the first of the two “Eves” in Chan films!

01-05 20:40

Charlie Angel:

NICE editing & insertions here!

01-05 20:41

Charlie Angel:

Like little tears, my terrific feeling.  Oh Mikimoto baby, where are you now?

01-05 20:41

Austinchanfan:

this was longer than other chan films

01-05 20:41

Charlie Angel:

PLOP!

01-05 20:41

Rush:

Chan took care of business.

01-05 20:42

Godwinshelley:

So Eric is just crazy at this point?  It’s not like shooting the Col. will stop him from being arrested

01-05 20:42

Austinchanfan:

yep

01-05 20:42

Charlie Angel:

Lee Egypt Oswald!!

01-05 20:42

Rush:

Yes, GS!  He was definitely crazy…complete with a twitch!

Angel:

01-05 20:43

Charlie Angel:

He dyes happy.

01-05 20:43

Matt:

Image thumbnail

01-05 20:44

tenman:

ACF, yes, it is longer, and if it had been made later – even with the same script – it would have been much shorter. Lots of pauses and drawn out speeches. Their timing is still that of a silent film

01-05 20:44

Austinchanfan:

back when this was made india was under British rule

01-05 20:44

Rush:

TYSM…Matt….

01-05 20:44

Charlie Angel:

No.

01-05 20:44

Rush:

They can now marry!

01-05 20:44

Louise:

How careless of Chan!!!

01-05 20:44

Charlie Angel:

We mean Yes.

01-05 20:44

Rush:

This is the oddest way that Chan plays cupid!  Killing the former husband!

01-05 20:45

Austinchanfan:

love silent films

01-05 20:45

Charlie Angel:

Walk softly, catcher crazy monkey.

01-05 20:45

Godwinshelley:

Even the ending is unbearably slow

01-05 20:45

Rush:

Yes, ACF!

THE END….

(Applause…)

01-05 20:45

Matt:

<yee-haw>

01-05 20:45

Rush:

As the organ plays the exit music….

01-05 20:45

tenman:

Silents were a world of their own. Different pacing as well as different acting.

01-05 20:45

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:

Did he ever get a band-aid?

01-05 20:45

Charlie Angel:

PHAR LAPS to PHINISH!

01-05 20:45

Mike n Rachel in San Jose:
