Why are we seeing this movie this week? This film was originally slated to be “Charlie Chan at the Ringside,” and was to star Warner Oland. The project got off to a very shaky start, and, after a number of delays due to Mr. Oland, the actor walked off of the set, and in a state of mind that made a quick return out of the question. 20th Century-Fox was in a dilemma. What should be done with all of the material that had already been shot? The answer was that the story would be retooled to become a Mr. Moto movie, and as many completed scenes as possible would be salvaged. Of course, this meant that most of the original cast would remain as intended, including Keye Luke, who would now be seen attending a criminology class offered by the Japanese sleuth. It is interesting to hear Mr. Moto utter lines – and aphorisms – which were intended to exit the lips of Charlie Chan…”)
