Rush: Calif. is crazy…as always….

Matt1: Still the same then?

hounder: my home in NC is on lockdown for at least 14 days.

Rush: I keep hearing about mandatory stay-at-home, but that’s not really possible.

Rush: Yes, Matt!

Rush: Still the same!

Rush: Marie and I are teaching from home.

hounder: so far our stay at home has the excepton for essentials.

Rush: Had online meetings this morning.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi everyone!

Matt1: 1:40

Rush: Animals run amok!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Panic at the circus!

hounder: we trundle on m. you guys good?

danventure: So the Mob threatened trouble and the circus got it. Green Hornet didn’t help much.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hanging in there, hounder. DC just got our “lockdown” orders.

Rush: Yes, Mike?

Rush: (Hello to rachel…)

Mike n Rachel in DC: MD, VA and DC are all on “stay in your house” orders

hounder: graham county in nc is on lockdown as well

Rush: What type of haircut does the Green Hornet get?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Are you in Graham Co. hounder? I lived in Durham for 20 years…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Rush…you’re not thinking…”buzz cut” are you?

Rush: Bingo!

Rush: 🙂

hounder: no. still in fl, and apparantly will be for the foreseeabl future

marcycloud: lol

hounder: buzz

Mike n Rachel in DC: Rachel: BUZZ Aldrin?

Rush: Got it!

Matt1: Booooooooo

Rush: YAY!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Keep going, Rush. Rachel LOVES puns!

Mike n Rachel in DC: *Rachel swats Mike*

Rush: 🙂

Cdirus: Thats a real smart move – chuck it out the window!

danventure: Wait! What about passersby?? What of cars/businesses??

danventure: Sure, the Green Hornet’s having a blast, but what about these others?

Rush: At least he gets a collectible Hornet pin out of the deal!

Mike n Rachel in DC: I wonder where he gets those things made…

Rush: Good question!

Mike n Rachel in DC: “Hello? Acme Medallion Company? Yes. Green Hornet here. I need another 12 gross of my special medallions.”

Rush: 🙂

Mike n Rachel in DC: Actually, Kato probably takes care of monitoring the stock of medallions and gas pellets and placing orders.

Rush: I love Kato’s goggles.

Rush: True, Mike/Rachel!

Mike n Rachel in DC: I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when Keye Luke was talking about his “Kato goggles” over a few beers.

Rush: Cy Kendal and the man next to him in that last scene were both on CC films.

Rush: (in)

Rush: There is never anyone in the streets.

hounder: brb dog walk

Rush: Okay…

Mike n Rachel in DC: 🙂

Mike n Rachel in DC: Sneaky hornet

Louise has joined this room

Mike n Rachel in DC: Kato!

Louise: Hello Chan Clan!

Matt1: Hello Louise!

Cdirus: Hi Louise!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi Louise…welcome!

Rush: d evening to YOU!

Louise: Happy to be here

Rush: Great to have you here!

Rush: Settle in and join us in the closing minutes of our serial!

Rush: About 4 minutes left in it.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Not yet apparent how the underworld is doomed…

hounder: back

Louise: I have an odd experience to add to this Chan experience: I now know someone who has been murdered. I want to say it is nothing like in the movies.

Rush: Oh, MY!

Cdirus: Wow!

Rush: That’s TERRIBLE!

Rush: How close were you you to the victim, Louise?

Louise: It was an old boyfriend from high school days. Nicest guy Apparently murdered in his jewelry shop during a robbery.

Rush: This man was in “Circus.”

Rush: Lt. Macy.

Rush: Again, Louise…terrible.

Louise: I haven’t seen him in decades but it is interesting how a murder can affect you even when you no longer interact with the person.

Rush: Of course.

Louise: Not like in the movies, I shall repeat.

Rush: I am sure.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Sorry to hear about that, Louise.

Rush: Well…on a more pleasant note, we have reached the conclusion of the Green Hornet serial.

Mike n Rachel in DC: *applause for Hornet*

Rush: Next week: “Lost City of the Jungle”

Matt1: <clap-clap>

Mike n Rachel in DC: Oooh

Rush: Again…with Keye Luke.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Dude really got around in those cereals…er serials…

Rush: Louise, did the victim live near where you live today?

Rush: (Yes, mike!)

Phil has joined this room

Louise: No Rush, he was in Connecticut.

Rush: Phil…welcome!

Matt1: Hello Phil!

Phil: Aloha Earthlings!

Rush: Ah.

hounder: hi phil

Mike n Rachel in DC: I (Mike) grew up in Detroit. Between Vietnam and, well…Detroit, a lot of the “kids” I grew up with aren’t around any more. I’m sorry to hear the news, Louise. It’s a weird feeling.

Phil: Good to see Rush, CD, our soundguy Matt, Louise, m&R, DA, Hounder, Marcy

Rush: Maybe you could get a little closure by contacting his family and sending your sympathy, and a few high school memories…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hey Phil! Greetings from Earth!

Mike n Rachel in DC: (or at least…DC)

Rush: Happy to see you with us tonight, Phil!

Rush: 50,,,

Phil: Or afternoon.

LJ and Dad: this is one of my favorites

Mike n Rachel in DC: The space shuttle launches are barely-organized riots compared to the launch of a Chan film!

Rush: 40 seconds…

Louise: Hi Mrs Phil

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi Mrs. Phil!

Rush: 30 seconds…

Rush: 25…

Phil: There’s a thought M&R

Rush: Is Mrs. Phill also with us tonight?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Perspicacious offspring

Rush: Chan, Jr. making deductions…

Phil: I did put some Bailey’s in it. Yes Rush, Mrs Phil is present as well.[

Rush: Hello to her, please!

Louise: remote control airplane

LJ and Dad: nicely kept secret

Rush: And a welcome to LJ’s Dad, too!

Phil: Ditto to you Rush.

LJ and Dad

Rush: THE IDENTITY OF THE NAVAL SEARCH VESSEL: U.S.S. Preble (DD-345)

PaulM has joined this room

Rush: Paul!

Rush: WELCOME!

PaulM: good evening

LJ and Dad: it took Charlie and son 2 days to get to the fishing hole?

Dona: I don’t think I’ve seem many people wearing a tie to fish

Rush: We are 7 minutes into the movie.

Matt1: Hello Paul!

PaulM: ok

Dona: Hi Paul

PaulM: hi all

hounder: hi paul

Rush: How are you this evening, paul?

Phil: Hi Paul

PaulM: tired, but content. well, as content as one

PaulM: can be nowadays\

Louise: a long chance?

Rush: Yes, Paul!

Rush: Beats a SHORT one, louise!

Rush: 🙂

PaulM: i’m fortunate to have an essential job, so i’m working

Rush: Charlie, Jr. helps out a LOT! Perhaps too much!

Rush: 🙂

Rush: Very good, Paul!

Phil: Cue the can

Rush: That’s good.

Rush: No “official” bodies….yet….

Phil: No, charlie just said he’d found the body of murdered pilot in lagoon.

Rush: AH!

Rush: Sorry….

Rush: Distracted by typing!

Rush: 🙁

Mike n Rachel in DC: Too bad Angel & Fox aren’t here. This is fox’s biggest night!

Rush: I love this landlady.

Rush: What a character!

LJ and Dad: wff

Mike n Rachel in DC: “sharp eye of eagle…”

Louise: Typical old lady character

Matt1: <slap>

Phil: WHITE FOX FUR!

Louise: White fox fur? Could have come from any number of movies!

Rush: She was probably considered for the wicked witch part in “The Wizard of Oz”!

Rush: Yes, Louise!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Would love to see her complete list of movie credits

Rush: THIS is the origin of ALL of our fox fur comments throughout the year!

LJ and Dad: ouch!

Rush: Another official body!

Phil: Cue the can

Louise: Come on! Who opens a closet in a murder mystery!

Matt1<tin can>

Mike n Rachel in DC: …and of Angel’s sidekick, Rush

Rush: TYSM…Matt…

LJ and Dad: mini-ChRLIE

Rush: Poor Charlie….

LJ and Dad: Little keyboard lead to big typos

Rush: WFF!

LJ and Dad: another white fox fur

hounder: time check?

Rush: Yes, LJ! I am the biggest typoist!

Rush: 16:30

Rush: 16:50

Rush: 17:00

hounder: thanks. no rush you and i are tied for the fat fingered typo award

Phil: A well dressed woman could only wear a white fox fur in the tropics.

Rush: filibuster – An adventurer who engages in a private military action in a foreign country.

Rush: KGPD – The broadcasting station of the San Francisco Police. This station began broadcasting on May 5, 1932

LJ and Dad: tea and sandwiches

Rush: Kids today: “What’s a….SIR?”

Louise: FUR!

Rush: Manhattan – The S.S. Manhattan was a ship of the United States Lines, and was launched at Camden, New Jersey, in 1931. Her maiden voyage on August 10, 1932 was from New York City to Hamburg, Germany with calls at Cobh, Plymouth, and Le Havre outbound, and Le Havre, Southampton, and Cobh inbound. She remained on this route until World War II began in September 1939. The members of the United States Olympic team, including Lee Chan, took the Manhattan from New York City to Hamburg, Germany for the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games had an interesting history

Phil: My, what a coincidence. She needed to hear exactly what they, at that exact moment, were broadcasting.

hounder: true phil

Rush: CC’s itinerary….

Rush: Yes, Phil.

Louise: HINDENBERG!!!! NO!!!

Rush: Hindenburg – At 803.8 feet in length and 135.1 feet in diameter, the German passenger airship Hindenburg was the largest aircraft ever to fly. The commercial flights of Hindenburg, along with Graf Zeppelin, pioneered the first transatlantic air service. She carried hundreds of passengers and traveled thousands of miles before being destroyed in a tragic fire on May 6, 1937 at Lakehurst, New Jersey

LJ and Dad: Hidneburg, minus swatst

Rush: The first of Lee’s Pop-isms!

Rush: Yes, LJ!

Rush: Those were blacked out!

hounder: the or something like that get annoying in this film

Rush: BUT…at the opening ceremony scenes, we see the Nazi salute!

Rush: THAT they left in.

Phil: Smart, break his toe so he can’t compete.

Rush: TRUE!

Louise: This is before Olympians cared about their images

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes, hounder…glad the “or something like that’s” got weeded out of Lee’s dialog after this film

Rush: It could at least mar his performance.

Rush: Yes, Mike!

LJ and Dad: wiki says this movie was released 15 days after H Disaster

Rush: “Number One Son attempting to spout aphorisms can be annoying…or something like that!”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, in 1936 there were still quite a few Americans who thought that the Nazis had the right idea about how to run a country…so glad to see that we’ve come a long way since then. (sorry)

danventure: Note the use of “classical” German police uniforms, not those of the Nazi party.

Rush: Not TOO many thought that way as we can see from the protests against members of the Nazi Bund meeting at Madison Square Garden in the 1930s.

Rush: The undesirables too often get the newsprint!

Rush: “Brother officer”

Louise: Walt Disney was at that Madison Square Garden meeting. He wasn’t a Nazi but he believed in an authoritarian approach to his business and probably saw some similarities with fascism.

Rush: HM.

Mike n Rachel in DC: True, Rush, but that was 1939. In ’36 those folks were still recruiting strongly…the Depression yielded a lot of recruits…

Rush: And many though communism was the answer then, too.

Rush: (Thought)

Rush: desperate times…

LJ and Dad: economic downturns often lead to rise of desperation and radicals

Rush: Sadly true…

danventure: Indeed. Quite a few were fervent supporters of Russia.

Rush: SLAP!

Rush: Indeed.

Rush: The train trip to Berlin.

Rush: Outside the window looks a lot like the real German countryside.

Rush: What was he reaching for, then?

Rush: here’s another instance of Chan using a “pause” to trap someone…!

Rush: Listen for it.

Rush: HERE!

Rush: “Perhaps YOU….have answer?”

Louise: Is that a caterpillar on his lip?

Rush: 🙂

hounder: …

Rush: A reasonable facsimilie thereof, louise!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Lee: “We sure make a swell team.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Pop: no comment

Rush: Indeed they do!

Rush: Nice stock footage used in this film.

Rush: “Hey! Stoppa da bus!”

LJ and Dad: stoppen de bus

Louise: stoppa the bus

Rush: 🙂

LJ and Dad: is that the same woman from the hotel earlier in the film?

Rush: We see this Matron in another Chan film.

hounder: charlie knows she’s trying to get away with something

Mike n Rachel in DC: Off to the concentration camp for her…

Rush: She is also Miss Weebles in “The Trap.”

Rush: Another “Matron.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: ah…vaguely familiar, Rush

Rush: “Alcohol is the root of ALL evil.”

Rush: Remember her, now?

Rush: Chan is probably thinking of the “Race Track Case” for that “long shot” aphorism!

Rush: Hasty accusation like long shot on horse race – odds good, but chance is doubtful.

Rush: Note the visible breath in this scene.

Rush: These scenes were shot in the winter months in L.A.

Dona: It’s not that cold here rush

Rush: Mornings are cold enough at times for one’s breath to show, though.

Dona: maybe. could have been a higher elevation?

Rush: AH! Dona, I was mentioning earlier that there will be a showing of “Castle in the Desert” on the last weekend of April at the Old Towne Music Hall in El segundo!

Louise: Bang!

Rush: If it actually happens, perhaps some of us can meet to see a Saturday matanee?

LJ and Dad: Charlie pockets another clue

Dona: I would like that

Rush: Let’s see what we can do!

Dona: Hopefully they will be able to do it.

Rush: I hope to drive up to attend.

Rush: “In Berlin, things like this CANNOT happen!”

Dona: That would be great.

Mike n Rachel in DC: A matinee? How fun!

Rush: It is fun. in the past I have attended several.

marcycloud has left this room

Rush: The Luke family used to show for a showing.

Rush: Yes, Mike!

danventure: Yes, Rush–a classic line!

Rush: 🙂

Rush: We…it just DID happen!

Louise: more fur

danventure: Yes, I don’t think those words mean what you think they do…

Rush: The Los Angeles Memorial Colosseum was used for a number of shots that are coming up.

Rush: It was constructed in 1923, and was the site of the 1932 Olympic Games.

Rush: (And 1984!)

Rush: “Call for Phillip Mor-is!”

Dona: I was there in 1984

danventure: And in 2028

Rush: Yes?

danventure: We hope…

Dona: It was pretty thrilling

Rush: Yes.

Rush: Coming again in 2028!

Dona: Saw soccer at the Rose Bowl

Rush: NICE!

Rush: Opening ceremony….

Rush: See?

Rush: There it was.

LJ and Dad: lol

Rush: Colosseum shots here.

Louise: I know I said this several years ago but I got to run into the LA Colosseum during a race years ago.

LJ and Dad: cool, Louise

danventure: Carrying the torch started with the Berlin Olympics.

Mike n Rachel in DC: A representation of the “Olympiastadion” in Berlin…

Rush: VERY cool, Louise!

Mike n Rachel in DC: That must have been a thrill, Louise!

Rush: I went to the first Super Bowl there in 1967.

Louise: It was exciting.

Dona: WOW Louise that sounds exciting

Rush: 200-inch telescope – At the time of Charlie Chan at the Olympics, the proposed 200-inch telescope that was to sit atop Mount Palomar in San Diego County in California was still in the early preparatory stages. Daunting work to precisely grind the 200-inch mirror for the telescope began in the mid-1930s, and the working telescope itself was not completed until 1949. Evidently, the prospect of peering deeply into the universe by means of this telescope was, for those alive during Charlie Chan’s time, something much akin to how we, today, consider the orbiting Hubble telescope.

Rush: Colosseum entrance here.

Rush: The East end.

LJ and Dad: Dragnet? Is Joe Friday going to show up?

Louise: Western Union!

Cdirus has left this room

Rush: Lovelock (John Lovelock) – Olympic runner representing New Zealand at the 1939 Olympic Games in Berlin who won the 1500 meter race at a time of 3:47.8. This race and the awards ceremony can be seen in Charlie Chan at the Olympics. The second-place finisher was Jack Cunningham (USA) with a time of 3:48.4, and third place went to Luigi Becalli of Italy (3:49.2).

Rush: Jesse (Jesse Owens) – A black athlete from the United States, Jesse Owens (1913 – 1980) was the star of the 1936 Olympic Games, which began on August 1 and lasted for two weeks. Owens, called the “Tan Cyclone,” won four gold medals: the 100-meter dash, the long jump (set an Olympic record), the 200-meter sprint around a turn (set a world record), and part of the team for the 400-meter relay, a race which can be seen in Charlie Chan at the Olympics.

LJ and Dad: Jessie

hounder: run forest run

Louise: fast running!

Dona: charlies heart is breaking

Rush: “Checkmate…”

Rush

Mike n Rachel in DC: That doesn’t seem to be the way to triangulate…

Rush: I agree!

LJ and Dad: this was the first time I saw him flip the switch

Rush: I always thougt it was the INTERSECTION of the lines.

Rush: Menacing look on this man’s face…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Me too, Rush.

Rush: Yes.

Mike n Rachel in DC: *beep beep*

LJ and Dad: lots of guns in berlin

Rush: Indeed!

Rush: Even in Berlin: “Calling all cars!”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Lee has been in tough spots before…

Mike n Rachel in DC: This is supposed to be an embassy?

LJ and Dad: here come berlin’s finest….

Mike n Rachel in DC: hold the can

Phil: Cue the can

Rush: Yes…put the can away….

Phil: CANcel the cn

Louise: Can we be any more confused?

Rush: LOTS happening, yes!

LJ and Dad: EXUSE please…

Rush: “Shot…and a KNOT.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Better than to lose life than to lose face…

Rush: 🙂

Rush: Note Lee’s turns!

LJ and Dad: Lee says “you bet” not realizing it was HIS life that was about to be lost?

Louise: GO LEE!

Matt1: His hair, lol

Dona: They look slow compared to today’s swimmers

Mike n Rachel in DC: <kids-yeah>

Rush: YAY!

Matt1: <yee-haw>

Dona: YAY!!!!!

Rush: “Was prepared for emergency!”

marcycloud has joined this room

Louise: his hair was bad!

Rush: Closing credits….

Phil: APPLAUSE

Rush: THE END….

Rush: (Applause)

marcycloud: yay!
