Matt1: Hello Rush!

Rush: Good evening, Matt!

Rush: Did you get the day off tody?

Matt1: Happy Memorial Day

Rush: (today)

Rush: And the same to you!

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Matt1: Oh yes….cloudy and windy here today though

Mike n Rachel in DC has joined this room

Rush: It was very warm and nice in our area today.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Good evening, gentlemen!

Matt1: Challenging 30 mile bike ride in 20+ mph winds

Matt1: Hello M & R!

Rush: However, I took the whole day to remove the linoleum fro our kitchen and laundry room floors.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Woosh, Matt.

Rush: Mike/Rachel!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yikes, Rush!

Rush: Good evening!

Rush: Yes.

Matt1: Turning into a handyman, Rush! Bravo!

Rush: We are getting things redone so we can sell the house next spring.

Mike n Rachel in DC: We were feeling virtuous because of some gardening…

Rush: I would have preferred the gardening, M/R!

Mike n Rachel in DC: ðŸ™‚

Rush: Handyman out of necessity, matt!

Rush: I just finished a nice mystery book that honoluLou recommended.

Rush: “Death by Dumpling” by Vivien Chien.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Sounds like fun, Rush.

Rush: There are a series of these books.

Matt1: After 11 weeks of isolation…..ALL my honey-do projects over the last MANY years are complete…Really!

Rush: It felt like the good, old-fashioned mystery novels.

Rush: Set in Cleveland’s Chinatown area.

Mike n Rachel in DC: The title is definitely in that ilk

Rush: Yes.

Rush: I ordered the second book last night.

Mike n Rachel in DC: An insidious poison in the dim sum?

Rush: Actually, Dim sum is in the title of the SECOND novel!

Rush: Anyway: Recommended.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Deadly Dim Sum?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Will check them out…

Rush: “Dim Sum of all Fears.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: OH YES. OH YES.

Rush

Rush: OOPS!

Rush: Next attempt!

Rush: Oh, well….

Rush: Tonight’s serial installment runs about 12 minutes.

Matt1: Where do we start?

Rush: 42:10

Mike n Rachel in DC: Found it! https://www.amazon.com/Dim-Sum-All-Fears-Mystery/dp/1250129176

Matt1: Ok

Rush: AH!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ah ha. It comes pre-set to the right starting point. Now that’s service!

Rush: We can start at 15 before the hour.

Matt1: I’m cued

Rush: I should do the same…

Hounder has joined this room

Mike n Rachel in DC: Locked and loaded here.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hello Hounder!

Rush: “Fire Jet Torture”

Rush: Hello, HOUNDER!

Hounder: Hi everyone. Just checking in

Matt1: Yep!

Matt1: Hello Hounder!

Rush: I hope that you can stay beyond checking in, Hounder!

Rush: Ate you in NC tonight?

Rush: (Are)

Rush: (Funny typo…ala the Donner Party!)

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yum.

Hounder: The computer’s packed so I can’t watch with you. Not yet Rush. Leaving tomorrow for 2 days in al then nc on Thurs.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Where in NC, Hounder?

Rush: I have to warn you, though, once you start reading the story, you will have a huge craving for Chinese food!

Matt1: Well, safe travels….How long will you be gone for Hounder?

Rush: Yes…be safe on your journey!

Rush: Is NC starting to reopen?

Hounder: I don’t know if I’ll have internet the so I may not get to check in often. 2 hours west of Asheville Mike. Probably return to fl the end of Oct.

Matt1: Wow, LONG trip!

Rush: Just as the weather starts to change, Hounder.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Wow. So really in the mountains! Hopefully it will be nice weather–it’s always beautiful there.

Rush: You have a place there, right, Hounder?

Hounder: I think the county I’m going to is a little more open. The concrete barriers are gone and they’ve eliminated the 14 day self quarentine.

Rush: That’s good.

Rush: I would hope so by now.

Hounder: I do have a place there. And the grass is probably up to an elephant’s eye by now.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes. Hopefully things will continue to calm down over the summer!

Rush: Yes, Hounder!

Rush: You might need a machete to get to the front door!

Hounder: It’s getting too hot here for me. 93 yesterday.

Mike n Rachel in DC: The grass is as high as an elephant’s eye…it looks like it’s reachin’ right up to the sky… (all together now)

Rush: With humidity, yes?

Rush: M/R: 🙂

Matt1: I’d but a few goats

Matt1: buy

Rush: Yes. That’d do it, matt!

Hounder: I’m hoping people don’t get stupid! But according to what was seen in Daytona Beach….they’re going to be stupid.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Fatten them up then a nice barbecue

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Hounder: Sounds like a plan matt.

Matt1: lol

Rush: The “reward” for all that work!

Rush: Well, Hounder, outside in the sun and heat is pretty safe, I believe.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, goats…you didn’t think that was FREE grass, did you? 😉

Matt1: Duuuuuuude

Rush: That bug does not last long in those conditions.

Rush: Wel…

Rush: Should we run the serial?

Cdirus has joined this room

Mike n Rachel in DC: We now have Apple TV, so we’re going to have the films on the Big Screen…

Rush: NICE, Mike!

Rush: Okay….

Rush: To give everyone time…

Rush: 45 seconds…

Hounder: Lol@rush

Cdirus: That’s one big Walkie Talkie

Rush: Watch those grenades…

Mike n Rachel in DC: It’s near there, Rush

Rush: Indeed, M/R!

Mike n Rachel in DC: *boom*

Mike n Rachel in DC: tick tick tick

Mike n Rachel in DC: Oooh. Very small pieces…

Matt1: Just in time!

Rush: LONG delay on that one!

Mike n Rachel in DC: a real VSP

Rush: Splinters.

Rush: A good old drafting table.

Matt1: Wasn’t he killed in last Chan film?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Compass. Protractor.

Rush: Atwill?

Matt1: I think they just looked a like, sorry

Rush: However, we DO see Mr. Atwell tonight in “Panama.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: In his “British” mode.

Mike n Rachel in DC: My aunt would have LOVED this evening’s movies!

Rush: Yes?

Rush: Interesting clue.

Mike n Rachel in DC: My aunt “Serd” (Seraphina) thought that Lionel Atwill was the most handsome man ever. She would baby-sit me and we watched about every movie he ever made. 🙂

Hounder: A good memory

Rush: Biff…

Rush: BOP!

Rush: Bang!

Mike n Rachel in DC: (While eating her favorite: Strawberry ice cream and pretzels.)

Mike n Rachel in DC: Still makes me smile, Hounder…

Rush: Sounds good, actually!

Rush: Sweet plus salty.

Mike n Rachel in DC: The movies were uneven, but the ice cream was always good! 😉

Rush: Fun tidbit about your aunt, Mike!

Cdirus has left this room

Mike n Rachel in DC: I’ve always thought that “pretzel cones” would be good for ice cream parlors…

Hounder: I remember watching wrestling with my great grandfather. He’d eat apple pie drowned in cream

Rush: Yes!

Mike n Rachel in DC: mmmmm

Hounder: That does sound like a good idea mike

Rush: Hounder…THAT sounds like a good time!

Rush: One minute left….

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hm. No big explosions seem imminent.

Rush: (Bubbles…)

Mike n Rachel in DC: glub glub

Rush: And…an abrupt ending!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hm. Abrupt ending.

Rush: Next week….

Rush: Part 9.

Matt1: I thought I lost connection

Hounder: Time to go pack a little more. I’ve been dodging light rain and now it’s starting to get dark. I’ll try to check back in later

Rush: Unfortunately, this serial has been chopped up and edited.

Rush: But, we get tyhe gist….

Rush: …and Keye Luke.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hope to see you, Hounder

Rush: (the)

Matt1: If not Hounder, safe travels and hope you have internet connection in NC!

aemelton: fine

Rush: Indeed!

Rush: Might be a smallish gathering.

Rush: That happens on holidays, sometimes.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Small in numbers, but large in spirit, Rush. 🙂

aemelton: has the feature started?

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Rush: And, by the way…please say hello to Rachel….!

Cdirus has joined this room

Cdirus: Sorry, lost my wifi and had to switch to the netbook

Mike n Rachel in DC: WB CD!

Rush: Yes…welcome back!

Mike n Rachel in DC: She’s here…still giggling about Dim Sum of All Fears.

Rush: 9 minutes until showtime…

Cdirus: Yea, lost the last few minutes of the serial

Rush: AH!

Rush: Yes, the titles are a bit tongue in cheek!

Cdirus: I was trying to look up that book you mentioned

Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, the bad guys were busy being nefarious and Keye Luke was getting ready to save the day…

Rush: Here is the Amazon location for the book: https://www.amazon.com/Death-Dumpling-Noodle-Shop-Mystery/dp/125012915X

Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, Rach always complains about puns…so this is a particularly auspicious find for us!

Cdirus: Thanks Rush!

Matt1: Cued here

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ditto

Rush: I am cueing now…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Or ditti

Rush: Opening title…

Mike n Rachel in DC: First Chan not on a laptop screen in a long time, here. We’re very excited.

Cdirus: I’m hold #12 on 2 copies of that book.

Rush: I am with you on that, Mike!

Rush: hang in there, CD!

Cdirus: Hey Rush, do you have to read those noodle books in order?

Rush: Maybe not…

Phil has joined this room

Rush: But I am doing them in order.

Matt1: Hello Phil!

Cdirus: Hi Phil, Dona!

Phil: Aloohhaa to all my esteemed Chan friends!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Phil! Dona! It IS a party…

Cdirus: OK, I can wait. I’m reading Tony Hillerman’s books now.

Dona: I saw the book in the chat before I signed on. I ordered it on my audible. I will listen to it this week. Thank you!

Phil: I hear David Lee Roth singing about his Ferrari “Panama”

Rush: Hard to be bored with two teens in our home!

Rush: 20 seconds…

Rush: 15…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Never a dull moment, Rush

Rush: 10…

Rush: 5…

Cdirus: The land divided, the world united!

Rush: YES.

Rush: GO!!!

Matt1<GONG!>

Rush: Title….

Rush: Music….

Phil: Gone baby!

Rush: Credits….

Rush: Nice GONG, matt!

Rush: TYSM!

Phil: Ah the music of the tropics

Rush: Yes!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Seems like an authentic Chinese gong…

Rush: And…here wego…

Rush: Intrigue right away!

aemelton: music reference

aemelton: navy

Mike n Rachel in DC: A little mood music.

Rush: “Japanese” music…

aemelton: xylophone

Rush: A hint…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Faux-Japanese vs. US Navy

Rush: Yes.

aemelton: whoa trumpets

Phil: Indianapolis was written on the side of that plane.

aemelton: this looks like a real location – not a studio

Mike n Rachel in DC: Had to play the fanfare with mutes…no time to put them in before the next “Japanese” music. hehe

Rush: Charles Stevens: Spy on Dock

Rush: M/R: 🙂

Rush: Miss Finch.

PaulM has joined this room

Rush: Lionel Atwell…

Rush: 6 years earlier.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Miss Finch. Quite the “bird.”

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Matt1: Hello Paul!

Mike n Rachel in DC: 18 years of teaching…that would make Miss Finch around 40…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hello Paul!

PaulM: good evening

Phil: Hi Paul

Rush: Maybe slightly more…

Rush: WELCOME, Paul!

Dona: Hi Paul

Rush: We just arrived in “Panama.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hehe…assuming she started right out of school.

Rush: 5:25

Rush: True, Mike.

Phil: Next thing she’ll be doing marijuana

Rush: 6:10

Cdirus: Hi Paul!

Dona: lol

Rush: Yes, Phil…but maybe not in 1940!

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Mike n Rachel in DC: Maybe a little cocaine…

Phil: Especially in 1940. Nothing’s regulated then.

Rush

Rush: Douglas “Dolphin” flying boat.

Cdirus: Grumman Goose?

Cdirus: Ooops

aemelton: I love old airplane scenes

Rush: Dr. Grosser.

Rush: Me too, AE!

Phil: Me three.

Rush: The “Clipper” especially.

Cdirus: Anyone remember the show Tales of the Gold Monkey?

Rush: 8:20

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ah, the Good Old Days. When you could take your bubonic plague infected rats as a carry-on–for FREE!

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Rush: TRUE!

Dona: lol

Mike n Rachel in DC: Now, most airlines charge $30

aemelton: whether the rats are diseased or not

Rush: Maybe $1.50 in 1940!

Cdirus: Yay! Balboa

Rush: Yes!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Is this Rocky’s hometown?

Rush: “Fu Yuen Panama Hats”

Cdirus: Balboa High School Class of 1988!

Rush: Maybe his ancestors.

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Rush: Watch those cigarettes….

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hats are easier on the lungs

Rush: True!

Matt1: World famous detective CC goes deep undercover?

Phil: Cigarettes Kill!

Rush: Nice opening shot of Chan.

Rush: “Thousand friends too few”

Rush: “One enemy too many”

Mike n Rachel in DC: So Charlie shows up everywhere around the world and is instantly recognized…so how can he pose as an unknown hat dealer?

Phil: Yeah stupid, stick with the cover names

Cdirus: Good point

aemelton: don’t over-think it

Rush: Maybe his fame has not yet reached Balboa, Panama!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Fu Yuen. A name that can hide anyone.

Rush: Yes!

Rush: (Cough…)

Rush: (GAG…)

Matt1: Beware, Smoking kills!

aemelton: like James bond saying his name all over the place

Phil: CUE THE CAN!

Matt1<tin can>

Rush: “Policia!”

Rush: TYSM, Matt…

Rush: July 15, 1940…

Rush: “Fu Yuen” could not have been in Balboa that long.

Matt1: Funny scene

Rush: he would still be something of a stranger.

Rush: YES!

Mike n Rachel in DC: He has quite a hat business…

Rush: SLAP!

Rush: Interesting collection of individuals in that cell.

Rush: “Man without relatives is man without trouble.”

Rush: Funny line.

Rush: “Maybe tomorrow we choose you, I think…”

Rush: Boanide.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Tetragene!

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Mike n Rachel in DC: Oops.

Phil: Dang, thought it was tetragine

PaulM: “Maybe tomorrow we SHOOT you, i think”

Rush: That one apprears later!

PaulM: they think he’s a spy

Rush: Yes.

Rush: Accurate map of the Canal.

Mike n Rachel in DC: “was not aware of current collaboration”. 🙂

Rush: good line!

Rush: With the Toler era, we get more moments of humor.

Rush: “Young maiden of fifty summers or more…”

Phil: Charlie dates the teacher at “50 summers or more”

Mike n Rachel in DC: “50 summers or more.” Must have had a few extra years there, Rush.

Rush: Maybe she started teaching a little later in life.

Rush: YES!

Rush: Or..perhaps she wanted to come off as a little younger!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Or maybe 18 years of teaching just made her look a little older than her true age…

Rush: Two sailors and one girl there…

Rush: Could very well BE, Mike!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Two sailors and one girl…sounds like trouble.

Rush: Yes.

Rush: Sounds a bit suspect…

Rush: That “new mixture…”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Secret plans, no doubt.

Rush: Yes.

Rush: And, the aptly named Dr. Grosser…

Rush: Jimmy investigates.

Dona: That is true Rush

Rush: Note how the music rises…

Mike n Rachel in DC: This is from a Sherlock Holmes movie.

Rush: Yes?

Mike n Rachel in DC: “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” (Basil Rathbone)

Rush: Lollipop!!!

Mike n Rachel in DC: He’s back!

Rush: Tarantulas.

Rush: RATS!

Phil: Door to room filled with plague infected rats left unlocked.

aemelton: Mike n Rachel you really know your old mystery movies

Rush: Manolo’s cabaret.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Start around 1:17:00. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76GiUWcqt3Q

Dona: I’m trying to remember which one Mike

Phil: Door to room filled with plague infected rats left unlocked.

Rush: I agree, AE!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Different orchestra and different tempos (slower) but the exact same music

Rush: Hm.

Mike n Rachel in DC: I would LOVE to know how this music got shared around

Rush: Note their expressions…

aemelton: that’s amazing

Rush: “Who’s THIS guy?”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Pretty good Spanish for a Czech refugee…

Rush: This would be a fun place to visit.

Rush: I was thinking the same, Mike!

Rush: Snooping while smoking.

Rush: (Applause…)

aemelton: snooping is always better with a smoke

Rush: Brash young man!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hard to conceal one’s presence with cigarette smoke in the air…

Rush: I guess so, AE!

Rush: Like Kashimo in “The Black Camel”

Rush: Note the drunk sailor between them.

aemelton: ha

Phil: What’s Kane’s first name?

Rush: You got me, Phil!

Phil: The guy that’s talking to her right now?

Rush: But, Kane’s LAST name is Richmond!

Phil: There you go. Thanks!

Rush: Kane Richmond: Richard Cabot

Rush: Here comes trouble!

Phil: TYSM

Mike n Rachel in DC: Silenco la boca!

Rush: Oh, JIMMY!

Rush: The beans are spilled.

Rush: Officially.

Dona: big mouth

Phil: chamPAGna

Rush: “Perhaps better to let cat out of bag than drown same.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Exit Fu Yuen. Enter Charlie Chan.

Rush: Yes.

Rush: We see that they know of Charlie chan, but probably had not seen many pictures of him.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, Charlie…it’s not the rats, it’s the FLEAS you have to worry about.

Rush: TRUE!

Mike n Rachel in DC: I bet he looks a lot like Fu Yuen.

Rush: ðŸ™‚

Rush: Maybe “Puzzums.”

Rush: Look for “evidence” of the rats having been there.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yuck

Phil: Jimmy could be working for today’s media and reporting on covid

Rush: Yes…YUCK.

Rush: Sometimes there is a touch or two of “yuck” in detective work!

Phil: The way one thing leads to another with that boy

Mike n Rachel in DC: Of all the plots to hamper the Panama Canal, an infestation of plague infested rats seems the least likely, Jimmy.

Rush: yes, Phil!

Rush: Jimmy could try a window.

Phil: Another plausible theory could be that of spoiled bananas

Mike n Rachel in DC: Cielito Lindo

Rush: TYSM, Mike!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Sweet Little Heaven. 🙂

Cdirus: Mexican song

Rush: It made its way south to Panama!

Rush: “Good night, lady…”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Probably played for the tourists…not too discerning about Central American culture?

Rush: (Phew!)

Rush: Yes, mike!

Rush: Manolo’s darker nater comes through.

Rush: (nature)

Phil: Jimmy’s all masked up!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Amateur detective strikes again

Rush: We see CC get physical.

Rush: But…it’s Jimmy!

Mike n Rachel in DC: “Thought too horrible to contemplate.” Droll.

Rush: So, Jimmy did use the window exit…

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Rush: Jimmy, we shall see, was on the USC baseball team.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Nice “throwing” humidor.

Rush: Strike!

Mike n Rachel in DC: We find the Chan family is quite athletic.

Rush: AH! He still IS attending college.

Rush: Yes, Mike.

Rush: In “The Golden Eye,” we see that Lee was also involved with baseball at one point in his life.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Czardas (her last name) is also the name of a Gipsy dance.

Rush: Yes?

Rush: INTERESTING!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes…Hungarian/Romanian roots

Rush

Mike n Rachel in DChttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cs%C3%A1rd%C3%A1s

Rush: Got it! TYSM!

Rush: Again, interesting!

Phil: Hungarians were also sent to concentration camps by the Germans.

Rush: “On soil of democracy you are safe from persecution.”

Rush: Yes, Phil.

Matt1<tin can>

Rush: TYSM, Matt…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Pretty can-intensive case for Charlie!

Phil: Right on it Matt

Rush: jimmy started to say that the Baroness had a strong motive…

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Rush: Chan goes to work here!

Rush: (Zooooommmm!)

Phil: Oops

Rush: Escaped like John Wilkes Booth did…

Rush: That was some drop!

Matt1: lol, poor Jimmy

Rush: Could have broken a leg.

Rush: yes….

Rush: The mind is a strong convincer!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Just like the ploy later in the series, Rush

Rush: “Where’s Reiner?”

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Rush: I had actually forgotten that connection.

Rush: “Docks of New Orleans.”

Rush: Not often do we see CC with a gun.

PaulM has left this room

Rush: And, that education has become much MORE expensive over the decades!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ooof, Rush.

Rush: Like “Treasure Island”!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Skeleton?

Phil: That sure looks like Dr Arnold from CC in Egypt

aemelton: of course there’s a skeleton

Rush: Phil: 🙂

Mike n Rachel in DC: Must have been a little short of coffins for those funerals?

Rush: Yes, AE!

Rush: The water business must be dirty.

Rush: I recall using those folded cups.

Mike n Rachel in DC: tick tick tick tick

Rush: Ships shown: USS ‘Arizona,’ USS ‘Lexington,’ USS ‘Trac’y (DD-214) and USS ‘Dahlgren’ (DD-187), as well
as two other Town-class destroyers in the background.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Excellent research department, Rush. 😉

Rush: He didn’t get his wish.

Phil: CUE THE CAN!

Rush: Yes…dead.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Crickets.

Rush: Yes…crickets…

Matt1: Wasn’t able to do the can!

Rush: A “manual” can…

Hounder has joined this room

Mike n Rachel in DC: If a can falls in the cemetery and no one hears it…

Rush: Dr. Grosser.

Rush: Hounder!

Rush: Welcome back!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yay!

Dona: Hi Hounder

Phil: Rush, early in the movie when the plane was going to be catapulted from the ship, the plane had “Indianapolis” written on it. The Indy, I believe was a heavy cruiser and the ship that delivered the atomic bomb to Tinian.

Hounder: Just a quick check back in

Rush: Yes, Phil!

Rush: You are correct!

Mike n Rachel in DC: And Phil, it ran into big trouble with sharks…

Rush: Some history in ths film!

Phil: Well, the crew did M&R

Mike n Rachel in DC: So none of the three big ships shown in this movie survived the war

Rush

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes…what a tragedy

Rush: The USS ‘Indianapilis’ as shown in this film.

Rush

Mike n Rachel in DC: tick tick tick tick

Rush

Rush: Third time the charm!

Dona: Nice picture

Rush: Unique gathering of suspects!
