Matt1: Been so long since I got back into the charity rides. They are fun and challenging

Rush: I can imagine!

Rush: And supposting a charity is always good!

Matt1: We’ll probably do the 50 mile, rather than the 100 and see how we do

Rush: Still…50 miles is 50 miles!

Rush: it would be about from my home to Iowa City.

Dona has joined this room

Matt1: My family jokes they don’y like driving 50 miles, so biking it?

Rush: Agreed, Mike!

Hawaii_Steve: Punchbowl Cemetery was busy today. And yesterday.

Rush: I can imagine!

Rush: Hallowed ground to be sure!

Mike n Rachel in DC: That’s a US military cemetery?

Rush: Yes.

Hawaii_Steve: Matt, a cruise? I need to pack my suitcase. Hurry.

Rush: A National Cemetery.

Hawaii_Steve: The NEW job is wonderful. Having a ball.

Matt1: We embark in about 45 minutes, Steve!

Dona: That is great Steve

Matt1: That’s great Steve!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Not sure about this one, guys. I hear there is some shady goings-on among the passengers.

Rush: Wonderful, Steve! To say you have “paid your dues” is a GROSS UNDERSTATEMENT!

Hawaii_Steve: M&R: Yes. Military cemetery created at the end of WW2.

Hawaii_Steve: M&R, round up the usual suspects.

Rush: In about 7 or 8 minutes we can share the first of Steve’s extras?

Dona: sounds good Rush

Matt1: Great!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ooooh. Extras?

Rush: Steve, we can play the Atwell tribute first?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Rach: We need popcorn for the extras.

Hawaii_Steve: Rush, Thank your for the kind words. I’m just an old guy trying to get by.

Matt1: Hello Philly!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi MDA

mda19083: hello my chan friends

Hawaii_Steve: Rush, yes, please. Atwill first.

Rush: Then, perhaps you can note things about the Waikiki travelogue as YOU are the EXPERT!

Dona: Hello MDA

Rush: MDA!

Hawaii_Steve: Aloha MDA.

Rush: This holiday used to be called Decoration day. it is mentioned in “Charlie Chan at the Circus.”

Hawaii_Steve: Ah, Rush. Most interesting.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Charles Ives wrote a very striking piece for orchestra called “Decoration Day” too, Rush. πŸ™‚

Rush: It was originally a day when people would place flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers.

Rush: Yes, Mike?

Rush: Hence, they would “decorate” the graves.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes…he’s a huge figure in American music. His father was a band leader in the Civil War (Union). You can find all kinds of Ives history in Danbury, CT.

Dona: That is very interesting Rush

Rush: Interesting, Mike!

Dona: Yes, interesting Mike.

Mike n Rachel in DC: More info for those interested:

Rush: I enjoy things historic, Dona!

Hawaii_Steve: Yesterday, there was a ceremony at the Waikiki Natatorium. It was built as a tribute to the men who served during WW1.

Rush: I clicked on the link, Mike…and will save for later!

mda19083: I was intrigued when reading about this evening’s specials in the email blast yesterday

Rush: TYSM!

Rush: Yes, Mda.

Dona: I do to Rush. My grandfather was a high school history teacher.

Rush: I sent the emails out this morning. I was totally exhusted after a day of yardwork in the hot weather!

Rush: Nice, Dona!

Rush: My favorite high school teacher was a history teacher!

Rush: he made a huge impact on me!

Rush: Okay….

mda19083: Rush – TYSM for all of your efforts

Rush: Here is the link to our first extra.

Matt1: Yep

Mike n Rachel in DC: All set!

Rush: AH!

Rush: Okay….

Rush: 30 seconds…

Hawaii_Steve: As an actor, Lionel Atwill appeared in several films released by 20th Century-Fox, including The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939), Mr. Moto Takes a Vacation (1939), Charlie Chan in Panama (1940), and Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise (1940). mda19083: thanks for sharing the link

Rush: TYSM, Steve, for sharing that one!

Hawaii_Steve: Glad that you liked it, everybody.

Rush: We see Mr. Atwell as a multi-dimensional actor in that piece!

Rush: Okay…the next one!

Hawaii_Steve: Yes Rush. Little of the horror/mystery films.

Rush: Steve, would you honor us with an intro to it, please?

mda19083: from the films that i have seen, he was a talented actor

Rush: Yes!

Rush: Here’s the link:

Mike n Rachel in DC: There’s a slightly campy horror film from around 1930 called “Doctor X.” he’s a great “mad scientist” in that one.

Rush: This one is silent with titles and text.

Hawaii_Steve: Yes. will do.

Rush: I have seen that one, Mike! Excellent!

hounder: as well as can be. she’s still up so i may disappear if/when her bedtime comes. πŸ™‚

Rush: (Okay…)

Hawaii_Steve: Watch carefully for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Looks the same today.

Rush: And 1937 falls right into our Chan era!

Hawaii_Steve: Indeed it does.

Rush: πŸ™‚

Rush: So…

Rush: 30 seconds…

Rush: 20 seconds…

Rush: It is possible that a commercial or two will pop up!

Hawaii_Steve: A cruise ship approaches hawaii from the North Shore. The north end of the island.

Hawaii_Steve: It was called Honolulu Harbor then. Today, Aloha Market Place.

Hawaii_Steve: Lei greeters.

Rush: Marie’s grandmother used to tell of of some of the things we are seeing.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Many thanks, Steve

Godwinshelley2: I’m starting to gear up for the MonsterBash in a couple of weeks.

Dona: Hi Rich

Hawaii_Steve: Just a flavor of the times. Thank you.

Dona: Hello GS

Dona: Hi NT

Godwinshelley2: Hello Dona

Rich Maine: Hey Dona

Rush: Probably it was made for small public viewings.

Nothere: Careful God. The Monsters might bash you.

Dona: Thank you Steve

Rush: NT!

hounder: hi nt

Rush: Now…we can cue-up for our FEATURE!

mda19083: i enjoyed both of our extras

hounder: hi dona

Hawaii_Steve: Thank you all for viewing a couple of clips related to tonight’s feature film.

Godwinshelley2: I’m sharing a vendor table – “Rarities from my Basement OF DOOM!!”

Rush: AH!

Matt1: Wow, time flies!

Rush: Sounds intriguing, GS!

Hawaii_Steve: Aloha GS and Nothere.

Nothere: Basement of Doom? Lucky I only have a Basement of Inconvience.

Dona: No basement here.

Rush: Please pause at the OPENING TITLE.

Godwinshelley2: I’m cued

Rush: NT: πŸ™‚

Rush: Everyone ready?

Rich Maine: Leo G Carroll tonight, added the G since last time

Godwinshelley2: I’m expecting to see Paul at the Bash

hounder: yes

Matt1: Yes

Rush: 30 seconds…

Rush: 20 seconds…

Rush: 15….

Rich Maine: One of my favorites

Rush: 10…

Rush: 5…

Rush: GO!!!

Rush: Title….

Rush: Music….somber….

Rush: credits….

Godwinshelley2: Leisurely music presentation

Rush: Diamond Head in the background….

Dona: Nice intro

Rush: A still shot….

Hawaii_Steve: Yes, Rush.

Nothere: So Rich that wouldn’t have anything to do with Kay?

mda19083: Oh Kay!

Rush: Rifling through Pop’s mail!

Rush: Not a good idea!

Godwinshelley2: saw an episode of “My Little Margie” – with shots of Royal Hawaiian hotel shot from the other angle – away from Diamond Head – it was interesting

Hawaii_Steve: Are the waves moving during the opening credits?

Matt1: #2 & #7

Rush: Jimmy and Willie.

Nothere: So how many world sahttering cases does Charlie have to solve for a promotion to captain?

Rush: Chan seems to be recovering from a cold.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Charlie sounds like he has a cold.

Mike n Rachel in DC: ha

Rush: Good question, NT!

Rush: maybe Chan’s secret service work during the War halted that promotion?

Mike n Rachel in DC: He’s probably solved enough cases, but his attendance record is lousy. Always on leave solving crimes elsewhere.

Rush: Plus, CC might have, through humility, declined a promotion!

Nothere: Mystery already solved like unfilled balloon. Flat.

Rush: Yes, Mike! That’s so!

Matt1: Saved by the door

Rush: Inspector Duff!

Rich Maine: Yes Matt

Rush: Willie displays a fad of the era.

Rush: A “beanie” with attached buttons.

Godwinshelley2: I refer to that style of jacket as a “Ricky Ricardo” jacket

Rush: πŸ™‚

Mike n Rachel in DC: I like your explanation, Rush. He declined the promotion. Would have had to spend too much time in Honolulu and couldn’t have all the exciting adventures. Also, it would have cut into his movie career. πŸ™‚

hounder: willie wears a funny hat…… and should he be wearing iit inside?

Rush: His “beanie.”

Rush: Popular at the time!

Dona: Archie

Rush: Right!

Godwinshelley2: a jughead beanie

Rush: Yes.

Nothere: Well Hounder when robbing police heAadquarters you need something to cover your face.

Rush: True!

Rich Maine: Cue the can….

Rush: Uh…OH….

mda19083: close that window

Rush: We will need the OFFICIAL declaration!

Mike n Rachel in DC: I’m just saying that this has to be the least secure police headquarters in the world…theives going through mail, murderers lurking about…sheesh

hounder: y’all got to quit leaving windows open for the bad guys.

Godwinshelley2: Knives and bullets wizzing through windoes

Rush: YES, Hounder!

Nothere: What do you expect when they keep the windows open?

Rush: Garoted!!!

Hawaii_Steve: Tonight’s film is based on the 1930 novel by Earl Derr Biggers “Charlie Chan Carries On.”

Rush: yes!

Rich Maine: Yup not very secure building

Rush: We have a “remake” of “Charlie Chan Carries On” (1931) with Oland in the lead.

Matt1: <tin can>

Nothere: Matt your on

Mike n Rachel in DC: pulmotor squad πŸ™‚

Nothere: This one just got personal

Hawaii_Steve: The murder of Insp. Duff differs from the novel and the film.

Rush: I’ll add a can image…BUT, we may be a little premature…

Dona: I was worried about my memory

Mike n Rachel in DC: pulmotor squad still working…

Rush: Dona: πŸ™‚

Nothere: The pulmotor squad never stops working.

Rush: Lionel Atwill!

Rich Maine: Mr Waverly appears

Rush: And, him, too!

Hawaii_Steve: Yes, Mr. Atwill, indeed.

Mike n Rachel in DC: NO ONE expects the pulmotor squad. Our chief weapon is surprise…

Rush: By way of “Charlie Chan in City in darkness.”

Nothere: Before that little incident at his house sent him to poverty row.

mda19083: and conjecture

Rush: Not for certain…

Nothere: I’ll be too drunk to commit the murder. Not that there will be another murder.

Rush: This watchman reminds me of Gus the Fireman on “Leave it to Beaver”!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Great alibi, NT

mda19083: i know that guy

Rich Maine: He is like the detective in Malibu!

Mike n Rachel in DC: The house detective? He’s in a Bogart film.

Rush: Matt?

Rush: A victim….

Nothere: But did he pay the early check out fee?

Matt1: <tin can>

Mike n Rachel in DC: Does housekeeping charge extra for corpse removal? Or is that included in the deluxe package?

Rush: CC is “backed up” by the hotel detective!

Nothere: I hope Inspector Duff isn’t upset he didn’t get the full tin can

Rush: Well, Mike….probably at least, no refund on the stay!

Rush: Dimes…

Rush: “Symbol of ancient betrayal.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: The bible story? Where Jesus is betrayed for 30 pieces of zinc?

Nothere: Better than copper

Rush: How could anyone have missed the drag marks???

Rush: yes, NT!

Nothere: In a Chan film? If your name isn’t Chan your liabel to miss anything.

Rush: TRUE!!!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Cheap betrayal rates these days. I want 30 pieces of molybdenum at least.

Rush: yes, Mike!!!

hounder: ..

Matt1: <cuckoo>

Rush: True!

Rich Maine: I need sleep!

Nothere: So can he order different sheets for the bed?

Rush: I doubt he’d have the strength to strangle anyone!

Rush: yes, NT!

Rush: πŸ™‚

Mike n Rachel in DC: Have him followed? By whom?

Rush: An HPD detective?

Nothere: Your mustache may be bigger, but I have a monocole.

mda19083: susie

Rich Maine: The fur appears

Matt1: Face only a mother can love?

Nothere: Don’t take this woman to a horror movie.

Rush: Well…it DID snap her out of it!

hounder: peeping thomas

Rush: This description should stand up in court!

Rush: Yes, Hounder!

Rush: White faux fur….

Mike n Rachel in DC: Are those mink pajamas that she’s wearing?

Rush: JIMMY!

Nothere: Well he has used other faces.

Dona: Oh Jimmy

Rush: An evening robe?

Rush: Fingerprints ruined.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Touch nothing!

Rush: Exactly!

Rich Maine: 35! Ha!

Rush: Right!

Nothere: Well with a weight like that your obviously not the hold on how tall did you say?

Rush: Here’s the tail that CC mentioned earlier.

Mike n Rachel in DC has left this room

Rush: The spiritualist couple….

Mike n Rachel in DC has joined this room

Rich Maine: American Gothic

Mike n Rachel in DC: Is the Imperial Hawaiian Hotel as nice as the Royal Hawaiian?

Rush: WB, M/R.

Rush: yes, Rich!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Thanks. Just stepped out to get our pitchfork. πŸ™‚

Nothere: Mwey Mike and or Racheal

Nothere: Just in time for the creeps of the cruise.

Rush: M/R: πŸ™‚

Rush: Jimmy spills the proverbial beans….

hounder: i think they were the models for the painting american gothic

Dona: Poor Inspector Duff

Rich Maine: How did she know Scotland yard?

Rush: It was painted by Grant Wood in 1930…10 years before this film!

Nothere: To whoever the murderer in our party is. I have nothing against you.

Mike n Rachel in DC: *pulmotor squad hangs head sadly*

Matt1: Your now up, Rush

Matt1: TYSM

Rush: It’s official….

hounder: foggy atmosphere

Rich Maine: That a typical Celebrity cruise ship

Rush: Ship’s bells indicated 10:30 pm.

Nothere: True Hounder. Who do they think they are Monogram?

Rush: πŸ™‚

Mike n Rachel in DC: Fiercely plaid coat too.

Rush: Test pattern.

Rush: Disappeared….

hounder: those coats are making it look cold or damp on deck

Rush: Yes.

Nothere: Chan cruises

Rush: They have successfully portrayed the foggy, damp condition!

Nothere: Disappearing passengers, doors that open and close by themselves. I want a refund.

Rush: Maybe she was just leaving the ship’s bar.

Rich Maine: Another fur

Rush: The specter of doom….

Mike n Rachel in DC has left this room

hounder: that’s it grab on to charlie. he’ll protect you

Nothere: Did you forget your broomstick lady?

Rush: Suzie IS a bit “clingy”!

Rush: JIMMY!

Nothere: Just don’t tell Mrs. Chan

Rush: It looked like Chan was about to throw a punch there!

Nothere: Digging trenches? Difficult, but Suzie can do it.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Love this exchange.

Rush: Yes.

Nothere: Call me crazy, but I think it might be Mr. Pembelton.

Rush: Hm…

Nothere: Well at least the killer helps pay for the funeral before he kills you.

Dona: lol

Rich Maine: How did that fit under door?

Rush: πŸ™‚

Rush: High threshold?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Did you ever hear the expression “one thin dime,” Rich? πŸ˜‰

Hawaii_Steve: The ship was rocking when stones were thrown.

Rich Maine: 1 but not 30 πŸ™‚

Nothere: 3 handed bridge?

Rush: Americanized Mah Jong.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Another American innovation, NT?

Rush: πŸ™‚

Nothere: I’ll see your force from within and raise you an Eve Cario

mda19083: FYI – I just added a few dessert items to tonight’s virtual food and drink cart – enjoy!

Rush: Well, Rich, if the person being guarded is killed, he gets his money back.
