mda19083: warm one here in the Philadelphia environs
Rush: Summer simmer…
mda19083: I am wearing my aloha shirt to stay cool
mda19083: when did hawaiian shirts become aloha shirts?
Matt1: In Hawaii they’re called “shirts”
mda19083 has left this room
mda19083 has joined this room
Rush: That’s what they are meant to express.
mda19083: aha – makes sense to me now
Hawaii_Steve: MDA, a long time ago.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Aloha to MDA/shirt 🙂
Hawaii_Steve: Aloha shirts, not Hawaiian shirts.
mda19083: Steve – i’m old but i don’t remember the change in terminology
Rush: In about 5 minutes we can share the first “extra.”
Mike n Rachel in DC: Are those the bright print shirts?
mda19083: Mike – that is what I believe
Hawaii_Steve: The Extras for tonight relate to the war effort on the homefront.
Mike n Rachel in DC: I’ve always been curious whether the designs originally had meanings…or designated families, etc.
mda19083: cued here with the extras
Rush: And, the first one vaguely brings to mind what the scientist, Harper, is working on in our movie tonight!
Hawaii_Steve: The locals have called the color tropical shirts ALOHA SHIRTS since the 1930s. People from the mainland call them Hawaiian shirt.
Rush: Who knows, perhaps it gave the writers an idea that they expanded on, if only from the title!
mda19083: Steve – that explains it as i am from the mainland
Hawaii_Steve: There are several movies and TV episodes, produced in Hollywood & NY, that call the shirts Hawaiian shirts.
Rush: The aloha shirt (Hawaiian: palaka aloha), also referred to as a Hawaiian shirt, is a style of dress shirt originating in Hawaii. They are collared and buttoned dress shirts, usually short-sleeved and made from printed fabric. They are often worn untucked, but can also be worn tucked into the waist of trousers. They are worn casually or as informal business attire in Hawaii.
“Aloha Friday”, a now-common tradition of celebrating the end of the workweek by wearing more casual attire on Fridays, initially grew out of an effort to promote aloha shirts.
Rush: (From Wikipedia)
mda19083: we should have an aloha monday some night in the chat room
Hawaii_Steve: Rush, exactly. Thank you.
Rush: Okay! Steve will you please introduce our first extra?
Mike n Rachel in DC: They’re great for hot, humid climates (like DC)…and fun to wear.
Rush: Yes, Mike!
Hawaii_Steve: There is one Chan film in which the musicians wear aloha shirts. Monogram. Rush, title?
Rush: “The Tree in a test Tube”
Rush: I think that film might be “CC at the Olympics”
mda19083: ready as i’ll ever be
Rush: OR…”Dangerous Money’ comes to mind!
Mike n Rachel in DC: I’m going with Feathered Serpent 🙂
Hawaii_Steve: Its the Monogram set in the south pacific.

Rush: This is the furst time I have seen this short.
Rush: I heard about it before, but have not seen it till now!
Rush: I think it is the only color footage of laural and Hardy!
Rush: We could see that Stan has red hair.
Rush: And, there will be a “Tree in a Test Tube” so to speak, in our movie tonight!
Mike n Rachel in DC: They look a little different than in the other films I remember…though they’re older here, too
Rush: They were both over 50 by this film.
Hawaii_Steve: “Tree” was shot on 16mm color film stock during a lunch break, 1942.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Very cool story. Probably the film came from trees too.
Rush: So they were working on one of their MGM films.
Rush: Not the best of movies in their output, and not their fault!
mda19083: good films come from good material
Rush: RATIONING during the War…
mda19083: cued here
Rush: Cued here.
Rush: This was a reality during WW 2.
Mike n Rachel in DC: all set
Hawaii_Steve: Rationing among civilians during the war.
Rush: I recall cleaning out our garage when I was a kid, finding ration coupons.
Rush: Ready everyone?
Mike n Rachel in DC: I still have mom’s ration book, coupons and “points”
Mike n Rachel in DC: yep
Rush: 30 seconds…
Hawaii_Steve: Any paperwork from WW2 is worth a lot of $$$ these days.
Rush: 20 seconds…
Mike n Rachel in DC: Gas was rationed to save rubber (tires)
Hawaii_Steve: Everyone was in involved during World War Two.

Rush: Hello, DONA!
Hawaii_Steve: In Hawaii, during WW2, there was a street curfew. Nobody on the street after 6PM.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi Dona!
Rush: Yes, steve.
mda19083: greetings dona
Rush: Can you intro our last one, Please, steve?
Mike n Rachel in DC: Was that throughout the war, Steve? Until 1945?
Hawaii_Steve: The movie theaters played their respective movies from morning, ending by 5:30 – 6:00 PM.
Rush: I think it lasted right until the very end..perhaps a bit beyond.
Hawaii_Steve: Mike, until late 1944.
Rush: Everyone cured?
mda19083: cured here
Hawaii_Steve: Next Extras features a Chan supporting player.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes, Rush. Cued too. 🙂
Rush: Short countdown…
Rush: 20 seconds…
Hawaii_Steve: See Lucille Ball.
mda19083: smoking will kill you – bacon will kill you – smoking bacon will cure it

Los Dos Masqueros: Igualmente, romanticos/as!!
Rush: And, besides the fog…steam!
Los Dos Masqueros: If it wasn’t for bad steam, we wouldn’t have no steam at all.
Rush: “Tree in Harper’s Lab”
Los Dos Masqueros: 3:30?
Mike n Rachel in DC: 4:00
Hawaii_Steve: Yes, Rush.
Los Dos Masqueros: They look like the barbers from deVille in that Cadillac commercial.
Rush: WELCOME, LDM!
Los Dos Masqueros: Grassy you know, Rush!!
Los Dos Masqueros: Keep in mind this is the best job all these guys could find.
Rush: Govenrment work, Ang- I mean, LDM!
Rich Maine: And more steam
Los Dos Masqueros: Uh-oh.
Mike n Rachel in DC: open sesame
Los Dos Masqueros: Forgot to remember to forget, you mean.

Mike n Rachel in DC: sounds like a country song, LDM. “I forgot to remember to forget…”
Rich Maine: XYZZY

Los Dos Masqueros: Wheels are turning in a hundred heads re sweeping this guy off the floor pronto.

Los Dos Masqueros: New son rises!!!
Rush: “My personality always count in ‘end’.”
hounder: please call me edward
Rich Maine: Call me Edward
Rush: Eddie is Edwin Luke.
Mike n Rachel in DC: But I thought you were Rich. 🙂
Rich Maine: It’s the dummy talking
Los Dos Masqueros: Anybody remember the FIRST “Thin Man” movie? Son Eddy reminds me of the poindexter young man who tried to dupe Nick & Nora.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Oh, the creepy younf guy? Yes, he does.
Mike n Rachel in DC: *young*
Los Dos Masqueros: Lucky for everybody Chan not driving.
Godwinshelley2: The brother who keeps talking about complexes?
Rush: Regarding an earlier message, Benson Fong (Tommy) was really busy with films other than Chan movies in 1944!
Rush: He may have been working on “30 seconds Over Tokyo” when this one was filmed.
Rich Maine: Sheriff Mack!
Mike n Rachel in DC: Aha…thanks. So it was a practical substitution.
Rush: A favorite of mine in the series!
Los Dos Masqueros: YES, GS!!! Yes indeed! That’s a great film, to me; it begged for another. The supporting characters in that one were all strong, too.
Rich Maine: What else was sheriff in?
Rush: This is his only Chan appearance.
Los Dos Masqueros: PAINFUL nausea.
Rich Maine: Ah yes Reno!
Rush: “Tombstone” Fletcher…
mda19083: horse feathers
Rush: Slim Summerville.
Los Dos Masqueros: Sheriff could be a combo of John Goodman’s character in The Big Lebowski, and Breaking Bad’s Walter White.
Rich Maine: STELLA!
Rush: By the way…did I miss Matt’s (tin Can)?
Rich Maine: No, no dB yet
Rich Maine: He is missing now

Rush: Chan noted he “has to be in washington tomorrow.”
Mike n Rachel in DC: Short train ride…
Los Dos Masqueros: hounder: we liked that line too!

Los Dos Masqueros: Well, SHET MY MOUF!
hounder: i like tombstone’s quips
Dona: I like him too
Rush: “…it’s what they DON’T know that’ll kill you.”
Mike n Rachel in DC: He’s a very likable character
Rich Maine: A tombstone and BB combo….priceless
Dona: That would be Rick
Rush: Sheriff…you are not exactly a “lady killer” yourself!
Rush: (knock, knock, knock…)
Rush: “Over-sized decision with under-sized brain.”
Los Dos Masqueros: Scholars / archivists here: is Edwin Luke here a relation of Keye?
Rush: His actual brother!
Los Dos Masqueros: I’d be looking to sell the motorcycle first off.
Rich Maine: Wow rush! Older?

Los Dos Masqueros: mda: YES!
mda19083: LDM rocks!
Rush: “Murder know no law of relativity.”
Rush: early home/business recording device.
Los Dos Masqueros: Play it backward, guys!!
Rich Maine: Pail is dead
Rich Maine: Paul
Rush: “Turn me on, dead man…”
Los Dos Masqueros: An early Lava Light.
hounder: seems to me when folk asked me to run for sherrif i missed an excellant chance to keep my mouth shut
Los Dos Masqueros: Poor guys couldn’t dodge dart.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Couldn’t afford one either
Rush: Another projectile…
Los Dos Masqueros: Nobody mentions what government.
Rush: THE government.
Los Dos Masqueros: THWACK!
Rich Maine: Wake up Edward
hounder: luminous footprints by wall
Mike n Rachel in DC: Chan has dart-proof clothing
Rush: The suit lapel was thick enough to stop the dart.
mda19083: Snow White never dated any of the seven dwarves – the were all miners
Dona: LOL MDA
hounder: pajamas loud enough without you make extra noise
Los Dos Masqueros: mda:
Rush: Good quote!
mda19083: oh no – not the secret panel!
Los Dos Masqueros: Nobody can shut off the gas?
Rush: “If silence is golden…you are BANKRUPT.”
Los Dos Masqueros: mda: Panel includes Bennett Cerf, Dorothy Kilgallen & Steve Allen!
Los Dos Masqueros: And Peggy Cass!
Rush: I had a teacher in Jr. High who would tell students: “Silence is golden, shut up and get rich!”
mda19083: what about arlene francis?
Dona: That’s a good one Rush
Dona: I need to remember that
Rich Maine: Kilgallen was murdered
mda19083: what a looker!
Rush: Arlene Francis.
Los Dos Masqueros: Rush, i’ll steal that quip!
Rush: Please use it!
mda19083: get the dictaphone
Godwinshelley2: Was she on I’ve Got a Secret?
Mike n Rachel in DC: nice that they put an outlet in the safe
Rush: On some quiz show for sure.
Los Dos Masqueros: Rich, you are quite right. I’m just old enough to barely remember Miss Kilgallen, and she was quite celebrated in serious circles. She was definitely offed. This weekend, by the way, was the 60th anni of Marilyn’s suspicious exit.
Rich Maine: She was investigating mob
Rush: That’s right, LDM!
Rich Maine: Several you tube on her.
mda19083: she is sleeping with the fishes now
Los Dos Masqueros: NEVER LET A DEFENDANT HANDLE THE EVIDENCE!!
Rush: Joe Dimaggio had thoughts on her demise…
Rich Maine: Poor Stella
Rush: Drag her out of there!
Rush: The door might close!
Los Dos Masqueros: Lemme guess: they SAVE HER. Cuz women weren’t allowed, under Code, to get x’d; right?
Rush: Chan is definitely “no-nonsense”!
Mike n Rachel in DC: No. Tin for cans was rationed and they’ve already used their tin can ration for this film…
Rush: I hope Cc has memorized the combo!
Los Dos Masqueros: Did it not occur to anybody in the War Department that TETRAGENE might serve—or even good ol’ wartime Mimeograph Fluid?
Rush: yes, Mike!
mda19083: LDM – even TETRAGENE was rationed
Los Dos Masqueros: “That horrible room where the desk is”: Think how the DESK feels.

Rich Maine: Even Dick clark
Los Dos Masqueros: Edwin goes back to China to fight in Revolution now ongoing.
