Matt1: Hello Rush!

Rush: Hi, Matt!

Matt1: Hope all is well

Rush: On the phone…sorry…

Matt1: Take your time

Rush: I’m back!

Rush: I had to change an appointment.

Rush: Got a call while I was typing to you!

Rush: How are you doing, tonight?

Rush: By the way…we are all fine at this end!

Mike n Rachel in DC has joined this room

Rush: Mike/Rachel!

Rush: Good evening!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Greetings gentlemen!

Matt1: Hello M & R!

Rush: How are you and Rachel tonight?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hope you are both well. Rach had a “long day” at school today. 😉

Mike n Rachel in DC: Mike is good (easy day…)

Rush: Ah. One of those days?

Rush: Good for you….

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes. Parent/band booster issues, etc. Grrrrrr.

Rush: Hopefully Rachel can sit back, relax, and enjoy our movie tonight!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hopefully a little X9 and Chan will perk things up!

Rush: Yes!

Rush: Our online copy of “Shadows Over Cinatown,” unfortunately, is the “best” I could find…

Rush: In two parts…and dubbed in Italian.

Matt1: I have DVD

Rush: Yes!

Matt1: Yikes!

Rush: Those that need the online copy will at least be able to visually follow along!

Rush: I don’t know if there are inserted commercials.

Rush: Oh, well…

Mike n Rachel in DC: OK. Mike is back. Served some lasagna to Rach. 🙂

Rush: Nice!

Rush: ounds very good!

Matt1: Like Garfield

Rush: (sounds)

Rush: Garfield?

Matt1: Isn’t lasagna the comfort food for Garfield the cat?

Rush: I never knew that.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hm. It works for Rach. (Grandma’s recipe)

Rush: I figured that there was some connection!

Rush: 🙂

Mike n Rachel in DC: (Mike’s grandma)

Mike n Rachel in DC: There may also be a relaxing bath in order later this evening…teacher self-care.

Rush: That must be VERY good lasagna!

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Rush: Maybe even a bubble bath!

Rush: That used to relax me back as a kid.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes…she has nice-smelling things she puts in there.

Rush: Herbal additives?

Matt1: Bathsalts

Rush: AH!

Rush: That would work!

Rush: Nice!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes, Matt. There is a local company that comes up with fancy stuff.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ideal for female pampering.

Rush: Well…should we roll “X-9”?

Matt1: Ready here

Rush: Yes, mike…and deserved!

Rush: I am ready, too…

Mike n Rachel in DC: towels off

Mike n Rachel in DC: OK. Ready here!

Rush: Ready, Mike?

Rush: Very good…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yep.

Rush: Let’s say….

Rush: 15..

Rush: 10…

Rush: 5…

Rush: and…

Rush: GO!!!

Rush: Nice opening title…

Rush: I like that handing of the “universal” book over…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Let’s see if we’re back on Shadow Island

Matt1: Bro!

Rush: ONE holding THREE at gunpoint!

Mike n Rachel in DC: We need Pop to sort this out

Matt1: Agreed!

Rush: Yes!

Rush: An escape…?

Matt1: Phew!

Rush: WOW!

Rush: Close shave!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Quick work, Lee

Rush: “There’s one less man on Shadow Island.”

Rush: I think that our Lee just stated an aphorism there.

Rush: I am really having to “squint” my ears to hear this tonight!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Lee is ON it tonight!

Rush: Yes!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes…can’t hear much of the dialog, but the good guys are cleaning up so far.

Rush: That’s my take, too.

Mike n Rachel in DC: She looks demurely evil…

Rush: WOW! Good shot!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Quote of the evening: “Ricotta cheese is magical.”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Mission accomplished. 🙂

Matt1: Works wonders, Mike

Rush: Yes, Mike.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Might try it on my sore knee…

Rush: 🙂

Rush: Interesting sequence here.

Mike n Rachel in DC: I have flashbacks to “Chan in Berlin” when this captain shows up.

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Rush: “House of Shadows”

Rush: Cy Kendall…

Rush: From “The Chinese Cat.”

Rush: The subtitles feature works well, if you want to try it!

Rush: Just thought of it.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Aha!

Rush: Some funny traqnslations, though!

Rush: ‘Hakejima” came out as “hockey team”!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Pidgin English…

Rush: 🙂

Rush: I see our next cliffhanger aproaching…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hero…mine…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Japanese burial!

Rush: Next week: “Japanese Burial”

Rush: That stock landslide footage was impressive!

Mike n Rachel in DC: It would have been fun to watch them edit one of these movies

Rush: Well….

Rush: Agreed, Mike!

Rush: 14 minutes till showtime…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Also would have loved to see them do the music

Rush: Yes, Mike! I would guess you can see where it could have been improved at times!

Rush: Fun, action music!

Mike n Rachel in DC: No click-track…I think they must have done it on the fly. (Not easy!)

Rush: Ah.

Rush: These serials have some good qualities, in my opinion.

Rush: Dome well, actually!

Rush: (done)

Rush: I am getting my DVD ready…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Agreed, Rush.

Rush: 🙂

Mike n Rachel in DC: Got “Shadows” set here. BTW this is a pretty “Shadowy” evening between Shadow Island and our feature.

Rush: Yes!

Nothere has joined this room

Matt1: Hello NT!

Rush: Shadows all around tonight!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hey NT!

Rush: Hello, NT!

Matt1:

Nothere: Next time on serial network. They run out of milk.

Nothere: HEy all.

Godwinshelley2 has joined this room

Mike n Rachel in DC: Good to have you not here again. 🙂

Nothere: HEy God

Matt1: Hello GS2!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi GS!

Rush: GS!

Godwinshelley2: Im back from Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia – passed out our Chan group cards

Rush: Good evening to you!

Godwinshelley2: I still need to cue up my dvd

Rush: NICE, GS!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Was it properly nostalgic?

Louise has joined this room

Godwinshelley2: Yes – had lunch with Lonnie Anderson – saw un-sold pilot of Nero Wolf with Kurt Kasner and William Shatner

Rush: 8 minutes to go…

Matt1: Hello Louise!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi Louise!

Louise: Greeting Chan Clan!

Godwinshelley2: Nice time

Rush: Hello, Louise!

Godwinshelley2: Greetings L

Rush: Welcome!

Nothere: Hey Louuise

Louise: I have been scrambling to find a CD player tonight since I lent mine to a graduate student and then I realized I needed it for Chan night!

Rush: 7 minutes…

Matt1: Ready here!

Godwinshelley2: I should go cue up my DVD player – thanks for reminding me Louise

Rush: So, of course, you found it…

Rush: 6 minutes…

Louise: Well I found an old laptop that didn’t have a battery but it did have a CD player internally. I’ll never understand why they stopped putting the players into laptops.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Have DVDs ripped to computer. Fewer technical things to mess up on Chan nights!

Rush: Good question, Louise.

Louise: I thought I had all the Chans ripped but apparently I missed a few, like tonights!

Rush: Great idea, Mike!

PaulM has joined this room

Matt1: I like my DVD on the big screen TV

Mike n Rachel in DC: Pro tip: Makes it much easier to “Chan in” when I’m on the road.

Rush: 4 minutes…

Matt1: Hello Paul!

Godwinshelley2: My DVD does not have a subtitle setting – but offers “English for Deaf and Hard of Hearing”. I picture watching the whole film with all the actors yelling.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hi Paul!

Rush: GS: 🙂

Rush: Greetings, Paul!

Rush: Good evening!

Nothere: Hey Paul

Godwinshelley2: Hello Paul

Rush: THREE minutes…

Matt1:

Rush: Title…

Rush: Credits…

Godwinshelley2: 1946

Rush: Yes.

Rush: 1946.

Godwinshelley2: Mary Gordon again

Rush: Mary Gordon.

Louise: I like to look at the first names in the cast list: so different from today’s

Rush: Can anyone recall an earlier Chan film she was in?

Mike n Rachel in DC: No Chan on this title sequence

Rush: San francisco…

Louise: anxious music

Rush: Hall of Justice

Godwinshelley2: Is that building gone now

Nothere: The sad thing is that statue needs to scratch but can’t reah it.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Newton Tharp, architect

Rush: GS, I think it is gone today.

Godwinshelley2: I went looking for the sign but never found it

Louise: the curtain of oblivion

Louise: an interesting intro

Godwinshelley2: Well this is a downer!!

Rush: Narration….

Mike n Rachel in DC: Untold horrors!

Cdirus: Greyhound!

Louise: Perry White!

Rush: Backfiring bus…

Godwinshelley2: Now if you have to take a bus, WHY bring along your chauffeur?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Perry White!

Rush: I think that, upon arrival in SF, we can see”Continental” on the side of the bus.

Rush: yes!

Rush: Mr. White.

Cdirus: Someone has to drive once they get to the city

Rush: US 40.

Rush: That is very accurate!

Mike n Rachel in DC: What assistance?

Rush: There really is an Emigrant Gap along highway 40.

Mike n Rachel in DC: So Charlie flies via transpacific clipper plane and takes…the bus?

Cdirus: At least he offered. No one offered to help the other ladies

Rush: SHOT!

Mike n Rachel in DC: True, CD.

Matt1: Pop!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Charlie!!!

Rush:

Rush: SAVED!

Matt1: Well “timed”, Rush!

Mike n Rachel in DC: whew

Rush: 🙂

Rush: “We SURE will!”

Mike n Rachel in DC: So soldiers can carry weapons when on leave?

Rush: THIS one can.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Good thing he’s not in the tank corps.

Rush: YES!!!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Charlie is getting more lenient in his older years.

Rush: Note Mary Gordon at the back of the bus.

Rush: Recall which Chan film she was in before?

Louise: Well that was cheery, Charlie

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hm. Doesn’t look familiar…

Rush: Recall Mr. and Mrs. McMasters…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Tanneverro?

Rush: AH!

Rush: Yes.

Rush: “The Black Camel”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Nice to see some of the early actors making returns in the late films.

Rush: Yes.

Louise: Wow, sign language

Rush: Some actors were on the way up…some on the downward slope…

Louise: Who’s on first

Rush: 🙂

Rush: “Don’t call ne CHIEF!”

Rush: (me)

Rush: “New Orleans Trunk Murder”

Louise: This movies seems so diffrent from the other Chans

Mike n Rachel in DC: Mr. Pendleton again?

Rush: It does have a different “feel.”

Rush: The morgue.

Louise: Must be a dormitory…

Rush: 🙂

Rush: In a manner of speaking…yes.

Matt1: Tincans?

Rush: For thos LONG dormitions.

Rush: Maybe a dozen?

Louise: BB is such a good physical comedien

Rush: Must be pretty gruesome…

Rush: Yes, Louise!

Rush: I love him!

Rush: He is NEVER boring!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hey, Mr. Chan! Hey, Mr. Hay.

Rush: !!!

Rush: Expecting the worst.

Nothere: Liverwurt?

Louise: I like that Chan movies have people eating and drinking

Rush: GORDON, Mary (May 16, 1882; Glassgow, Scotland – August 23, 1963; Pasadena, California)

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ingrid Bergman from “Spellbound,”NT: “Liverwurst.”

Rush: Mary Gordon was alson in a very small role in “CC in London.”

Rush: Prison Matron.

Nothere: Ingri bergman quoted me? Ridiclulous. I was not there. 🙂

Rush: Chan is right to turn up his nose at that “American” dish, chop suey!

Rush: LOTS of extras in this film.

Mike n Rachel in DC: No chop sticks for Jimmy?

Rush: Strictly a spoon and fork guy..although he was adept in “Honolulu”!

Louise: Babe? That guy would get a smack.

Rush: Nice uniform.

Rush: Yes, Louise.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Hey, buddy. Stop annoying the waitstaff.

Rush: Obviously he has little respect for her.

Rush: He’s holding something over her.

Nothere: But you should see how big a tipper he is.

Louise: He’s dropping a dime on her.

Rush: NT: 🙂

Rush: Yes!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, Louise, that’s a different story. 🙂

Mike n Rachel in DC: Awesome hood ornament

Rush: Mayfair Hotel

Rush: Yes, M/R!

Rush: I was wondering about that car’s make.

Rush: Chrysler?

Mike n Rachel in DC: Clearly a cop. They always call women, “babe.”

Nothere: THese Monograms have a lot more street action than the Universal ones.

Cdirus: those tow are really subtle

Mike n Rachel in DC: Practically invisible, CD

Nothere: BB mater of disguise.

Louise: great disguise!

Rush: Yes, to the above, NT.

Cdirus: Why was he carrying that in the first place?

Rush: This one feels like a higher, lower-budget film!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Grade B+

Rush: CD: BB is always prepared!

Rush: I would agree, Mike!

Rush: Funny bit here!

Cdirus:

Mike n Rachel in DC: And leave it to BB to pull this off so well

Rush: Yes.

Rush: “Hm…Sure is a FAST man…”

Rush: I REALLY enjoy the Monogram Chan films!

Rush: they have a certain “charm” about them, I feel!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Definitely a lighter touch Rush.

Mike n Rachel in DC: (but I miss the “science moments” in the earlier films)

Rush: And they really “ooze” the uniqueness of the ’40s

Rush: Yes, Mike.

Rush: That was a fun feature of those.

Rush: The latest technology demonstrated.

Rush: Jimmy looks a bit skeptical.

Matt1:

Rush: TYSM, Matt…

Rush: This is the longest wait, I think, for the first “official” victim.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Maybe a nice feature for the website, Rush. A “time to first victim” entry for each film?

Rush: CC’s wearing those stylish shoes he had on in “The Red Dragon.”

Rush: Mike…interesting thought…

Rush: I would also like to add BB’s words of wisdom someday!

Matt1: That would be good

Rush: Sheriff Mack!

Louise: Charlie is giving him the stinky eye

Rush: (Alan Bridge)

Rush: Indeed!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Bay City Escort Bureau…this always seems shady

Cdirus has left this room

Rush: I must agree.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Clearly there were different social conventions in the 40s…

Rush: They have cheerful Muzak playing…

Rush: Yes, Mike.

Mike n Rachel in DC: I wonder what it cost to get an escort?

Rush: In 1946?

Godwinshelley2: Social Conventions as displayed on film

Rush: Maybe…$15.00!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes. I just googled “1940s escort bureau” and got “List of destroyer escorts of the US Navy.”

Rush: That makes sense, mike!

Rush: Poor BB…

Cdirus has joined this room

Mike n Rachel in DC: Welcome back, CD

Rush: WB, CD!

Rush: Matt?

Cdirus: Thanks. That was my fault. Clicked on another link and forgot I was stil on this window

Rush: Many of us have done that, CD!

Matt1: Sorry, stepped away….

Mike n Rachel in DC: Looks like it. He was pretty dead-looking

Rush: A funny interlude…

Mike n Rachel in DC: Another BB classic

Matt1: Original bobbleheads?

Louise: GONG!

Godwinshelley2: cheap looking gong

Mike n Rachel in DC: Yes.

Mike n Rachel in DC: Ohhhh. Science!

Godwinshelley2: Looking for Gravel – opera singer

Rush: “Start peeling!”

Mike n Rachel in DC: “Make like a banana.”

Rush: 🙂

Godwinshelley2: Easier to just kill the girl

Rush: Tricked!

Mike n Rachel in DC: “What are you doing in Mary’s clothes?”

Rush: She’s an accessory!

Mike n Rachel in DC: At least he wasn’t talking to Mr. Hay…

Rush: “Car 54…Where are you…?”

Mike n Rachel in DC: Moo

Rush: 🙂

Rush: Squeaky brakes!

Mike n Rachel in DC: Charlie = smart

Rush: BB has to get on that.

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Louise: too many cans

Rush: Hold that can, please…

Louise: fake detective

Rush: Yes.

Rush: All but one, unfortunately.

Mike n Rachel in DC: You might want to hurry on that doctor thing…just sayin’

Rush: A BB-ism for the books!

Rush: Yes, Mike!

Rush: While they talk…

Rush: (Dolphin)
