Rush: That is always a good thing, Hounder…
Hawaii_Steve: Now I walk from my Kailua apartment to Sheila Faye Beach.
hounder: it definitelt lifts the spirits to be sunny and warm.
Rush: Good, sunny weather can do wonders to brighten the spirit.
Rush: Yes!
Mike in DC: HS…is there actually a beach called “Sheila Faye Beach?”
Hawaii_Steve: Since I moved to Kailua, there is !!!
Rush: Well…we can get our movie serial ready, if you like….
Rush: Steve: π
Matt1: I’m cued
Hawaii_Steve: Mike. I’m joking.

Matt1: 7:20
Matt1: 7:40
Len Freeman: secretor opening
Len Freeman: door
Rush: Yes…
Rush: Last week we learned the the Hornet’s car can “do 200”!
Len Freeman: When I was a kid we had a big old green Oldsmobile that my dad called The Green Hornet.
Rush: Yes, Len?
Rush: Nice!
Len Freeman: Big 4 door sedan….
Len Freeman: not swift… but it was green!
Rush: Those were the days of BIG!
Rush: And…steel!
Matt1: But Kato wasn’t driving Len!
Rush: You can get that badge in your next box of Wheaties….
Rush: The Green Hornet is framed!
Len Freeman: I think this was Gordon Jones only main role as a hero… he moved on to other backup roles, often a more humorous sidekick type.
Hawaii_Steve: Because this series was produced by Universal, we hear music from “Son of Frankenstein” and sets from the Mummy series.
Cdirus has joined this room
Matt1: Hello CD!
Cdirus: Hi guys!
Rush: AH! Nice info, Steve!
Rush: Good evening, CD!
Len Freeman: Al Hodges, who did the Hornet on radio, dubbed the Hornet voice when he was under the mask
Rush: To make it sound different…?
hounder: hi cd
Cdirus: Where are we at on the serial
Cdirus: ?
Rush: How are you tonight, CD?
Cdirus: Doing OK, Rush
Rush: 15:00
Matt1: 15:00
Len Freeman: I think to match it up with what kids knew from radio
Rush: That makes sense, yes.
Mike in DC: Kato is looking very dapper
Cdirus: Thanks Rush and Matt!
Len Freeman: The mask would’ve muffled sound, so they’d have to dub the Hornet voice anyways
Rush: Yes.
Len Freeman: I think they kept Hodges as the voice when they went to Warren Hull for the sequel
Rush: Earlier we heard that the hornet sound was the car’s siren, but when the Hornet asked to silence the engine, the sound ended.
Len Freeman: Hodges was later Capt. Video on TV
Rush: AH!
hounder: makes sense
Matt1: Charlie Chan move
Mike in DC: Hornet at work
Rush: That was a famous early “kids'” space show!
Len Freeman: my mind’s in a trivia mode tonight I guess
Mike in DC has left this room

Hawaii_Steve: Here’s your Unviersal horror music.
Len Freeman: dangerous stunts at any speed
Rush: I saw how they will escape!

Rush: Their engine switched tracks!
Hawaii_Steve: Great! Oh, Perils of Pauline.

Rush: Been well, thank you, Mariann…
Hawaii_Steve: Yes, “TV or Not TV” episode title.
Rush: 10 minutes to go…
Mariann: Still involved with your Roller Derby?
Rush: No, we lost our building lease some time ago, so banked track ended.
Mariann: oh no
Rush: it was all on cement and outdoors.
Rush: The first night, our main person got hurt.
Rush: i felt that was a “sign.”
Mariann: perhaps, you will find another location
Rush: So, in brief…no.
Rush: One can never tell, Mariann!
Rush: π
Mariann: so right, young man
Rush: 8 minutes…
Rush: TYSM, Mariann…!

Godwinshelley2: Rotating Door
Hawaii_Steve: With the family’s permission, I will add a little “local history” to the Honolulu stock shots in our feature film for tonight. At the 40m MARK, we see downtown Honolulu. If you folks are interested.
Rush: How has the new year treATED YOU THUS FAR, gs?
Matt1: Hello GS!
Godwinshelley2: Wow sounds good HS
Hawaii_Steve: Buenas Tardes Ms. Godwinshelly.
Godwinshelley2: We had windows replaced today – for a couple that had fogged up – and the weather cooperated
Rush: 4 1/2 minutes…
Godwinshelley2: Hello HS
Godwinshelley2: I’m cued
Godwinshelley2: Glad they have subtitles on this one
Mike n Rachel in DC: Would love the Hawaii Steve tour!
Godwinshelley2: It is WELL WORTH the trip
Hawaii_Steve: Bueno. Gracias.
Godwinshelley2: And check out the Honolulu Police Dept museum
Mike n Rachel in DC: Mike: I’m trying to entice Rach to a “Chan” tour of Hawaii.
Godwinshelley2: Not crowded
Hawaii_Steve: Honolulu’s Chinatown is very dangerous these days. Lots of shootings.
Godwinshelley2: Lots to see without going to Chinatown
Godwinshelley2: And DC has it’s own share of those anyways
Rush: I am cued now and ready…
Rush: 2 1/2 minutes to go…
Mike n Rachel in DC: I’d love to spend a decadent day or two at the Royal Hawaiian
Len Freeman has joined this room
Godwinshelley2: Hello Len – I thought I chased you away
Len Freeman: Ah… safely returned
Rush: If needed, we have our feature available above via a link.
Matt1: wb Len!
Hawaii_Steve: Godwinshelley is correct. Royal HI Hotel, Police Museum, Kailua Beach.

Mike n Rachel in DC: *lights fuse*
Rush: GO!!!
Matt1: <GONG!>
Rush: Title…
Rush: Music…
Godwinshelley2: Monkeys
Rush: Credits…
Mike n Rachel in DC: Manuel Arbo…
Rush: This was probably the same music used in “Charlie Chan carries on.”
Rush: Nice GONG, Matt!
Hawaii_Steve: This is a very clean print.
Rush: “Scotland Yard”
Len Freeman: Argo does a great job in this… should’ve done more…
Rush: Inspector Duff.
Rush: I agree, Len.
Rush: Too bad that there were not more.
Rush: “Carrumba!”
Godwinshelley2: Oland photo
Rush: Yes!
hounder: time?
Rush: So, in a way, Oland is in this film!
Hawaii_Steve: Cute photo of Chan family
Godwinshelley2: Oland was in a 1933 film on TCM this week
Rush: 2:20
Rush: 2:30
Hawaii_Steve: What film?
Rush: 2:40
Rush: Which one, GS?
hounder: thanks for the time check. my window froze and i missed the gong
Godwinshelley2: I’m trying to look it up
Matt1: <tin can>
Rush: AH!
Mike n Rachel in DC: Don’t know, but this could turn out to be a …. Murder Cruise…
Rush: TYSM…Matt…
Rush: Are you back on track, Hounder?
Godwinshelley2: Before Dawn
Len Freeman: time?
Rush: 4:00
Rush: 4:10
Len Freeman: got it
Rush: 4:20
Rush: Very good!
Rush: Stones.
Rush: In the “remake,” it was dimes.
Rush: As in “There Were…”
Cdirus: No!
Rush: “No, no no, NO!”
Rush: Senor Loff-TONE
Mike n Rachel in DC: Eren trece…ahorita hay doce
Rush: Si.
Godwinshelley2: The actor playing the inspector – is he in other Chan English films
Mike n Rachel in DC: Dropping like moscas
Rush: No.
Godwinshelley2: That is one WIDE hat band
Godwinshelley2: The inspector looks so familiar – like I had seen him in other films
Rush: Rafael Luis Calvo: Inspector Duf
Mike n Rachel in DC: *cough*
Rush: (Duff)
Godwinshelley2: Rush – did you see Yahoo was closing down Groups – didn’t this used to be a Yahoo group?
Rush: Yes, GS!
Rush: Long ago, Yahoo Groups began to decline.
Godwinshelley2: So if you want any of that archive material – you might need to download it or whatever you need to get it
Matt1: Many years ago
Rush: GS, I could not even access it anymore!
Matt1: I thought NightWolf ran that group
Mike n Rachel in DC: The Elders of the Chan Clan remember this. It is called the Dark Time.
Rush: She did as as we switced to this site.
Rush: Just to keep it rolling.
Rush: It was still at least another outlet, and could offer an “emergency” Chat Room if needed!
hounder: yahoo groups were useful at the time but social media evolved beyond them
Matt1: Yes, I remember both running
Rush: it was fun in the days when they had VOICE CHAT available!
Rush: yes, Hounder.
Rush: Max minchin and sadie.
Rush: Note how his abrasive personality “evolves’ as the film progresses.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Oh dear.
Mariann has left this room
Rush: Lost Mariann.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Eran once?
Matt1: tic-tac?
Rush: π
Mike n Rachel in DC: *whew* back up to doce
Rush: amyl nitrate – A vasodilator that is sometimes used to treat angina pectoris.
Rush: Carmen Rodriguez: SeΓ±ora Rockwel
Rush: Assembled suspects…
Hawaii_Steve: Are there photographs of “Ch Chan A
Hawaii_Steve: Chan Carries on?
Hawaii_Steve: If so, do the sets match the sets of the Spanish version?
Rush: OH!
Rush: There are at least some matches.
Rush: Just to announce in advance, and also to seek one or two to be here to sub for me, on Monday, February 3, I will be out of town and unable to be here.
Rush: ctually, I will be on a plane returning home while the Chat is happening.
Rush: So I will not even be able to check in.
Hawaii_Steve: Can we assume, like “Dracula” (1931), the Spanish Chan was shot on the same sets as the English?
Rush: SO…if anyone can take over that night, it would set my mind at ease!
hounder: i’m sorry rush, i just can’t count on my ability to be here anymore.
Rush: I think that would be generally right, steve,
Godwinshelley2: I might be available
Godwinshelley2: Remind me as we get closer
hounder: i try but….
Rush: I can tell you that the telegraph office we see later was exactly the same.
Rush: Chan’s office looks like it was the same.
Rush: TYSM, Hounder and GS!
Rush: I will definitely remind.
Hawaii_Steve: Gracias amigo.
Rush: π
Rush: Ana Maria Custodio: Elen Potter
Juan Torena: Dick Kennaway
Rush: Now we’re getting somewhere!
Rush: “Niza” (“Nice”)
Hawaii_Steve: That looked like a roll of 35mm film pulled out of briefcase.
Rush: I also think that some of the shots, such as the gun being fired, were probably from the Oland film.
Rush: Stock footage, too.
Rush: Yes, Steve.
Rush: The Minchins.
Rush: Sadie Minchin is called “Peggy” in this one.
Rush: In “Charlie Chan carries On,” Marjorie White was Sadie Minchin. We see her also in “The Black camel.”
Hawaii_Steve: In 10 minutes, we will see lots of stock footage of Honolulu.
Godwinshelley2: Is that rear projection while folks drive?
Rush: Moral: ALWAYS give important information NOW!
Rush: Don’t wait till later!
Rush: Later never comes!
Rush: Yes, Steve!
Mike n Rachel in DC: Well, at least it removes the motivation to “silence” the witness
Matt1: <lata>
Rush: Steve, tell us if you recognize the rear-projected footage as Chan and Duff drive in Honolulu.
Rush: Any recognizable locations?
Hawaii_Steve: GS,yes. Bishop St. in downtown. And you were there.
Rush: Stock train departure footage…
Rush: Ship…
Rush: Travel location sequence…
Rush: Hong Kong street performers…
Rush: Funny dialogue here.
Hawaii_Steve: Great historical footage from the past.
Rush: June 22 is sarah’s birthday.
Rush: This scene is in the Oland version.
Rush: You can see ALL the “Charlie Chan Carries On” images so far available at our scriopt recreation of this movie.
Hawaii_Steve: Thank you Rush.
Rush: I alsi incorporated some things from this film that match the script.
hounder: thankyou for all your work rush
Rush: We can recognize some familar musical accompaniment that we hear in other Chan films.
Rush: “We’ve got a book at home…”
Rush: “Mer..CI!”
Mike n Rachel in DC: Saucy.
Rush: Dick Kennaway is reluctant to acknowledge her because she is a bit wealthy.
Rush: Doen’t want her to think he’s after her money.
Rush: “Jim Maynard!”
Rush: Gets interesting here…
Mike n Rachel in DC: Crazy American lady
Rush: π
Rush: That narrows it to FIVE…
Rush: Now she’s in danger!
Rush: The telegraph office.
Rush: same set here.
Mike n Rachel in DC: That was close
Rush: TOO close!
Mike n Rachel in DC: beginning of another Chan
Hawaii_Steve: Okay, here we go. Waikiki, then Bishop Street in Downtown Honolulu, financial center of Hawaii. Two of the buildings are standing today. On the left, Alex-Baldwin Building. On the right, Dillingham Transportation building.
Godwinshelley2: Finally – someone who looks out for window attacks
Matt1: Wahooooo!
Rush: We finally arrive in Honolulu…
Matt1: CC!
Rush: Surfers…like in “The Black camel.”
Chan at home.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Ah…right
Len Freeman: Duke Honomca on surfboard? (sp)
Hawaii_Steve: May be same footage.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Looks very similar…
hounder: a different style of chinese dress shown here
Rush: I think so, Steve.
Hawaii_Steve: Not Duke Kahanamoku.
Len Freeman: Excuse my spelling HS
Rush: In the script for this movie, there was originally supposed to be that same breakfast with the family scene that appears in “The Black camel.”
Rush: The street, steve?
Hawaii_Steve: On the left is Alexander Bauldwin Building now.
Rush: TY, Steve!
Hawaii_Steve: Transist Bulding on right.
Rush: Love it!
Hawaii_Steve: Turn onto Queen Street.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Amazing tour. Thanks Steve!
Rush: TYSM, Steve, for the tour!
Len Freeman: TYSM
Mike n Rachel in DC: Chan has a BIG office!
Matt1: Did they make other Chans in Spanish with this actor?
Len Freeman: They should have
Rush: Steve and I were able to visit the old HPD office!
Hawaii_Steve: Just a quick tour of downtown. One can actually put it back together today. 1931 to 2020. Amazing.
Rush: I will not forget that day!
Rush: Amazing…YES!
Rush: Duff is shot!
Godwinshelley2: What is the death rate in Chan’s office – he seems to lose people there regularly
Hawaii_Steve: Chang Apana’s was not as big as Charlie Chan’s office. Apana shared his office with other police detectives.
Rush: Not the safest place, what with that open ground floor window!
Hawaii_Steve: GS, but never the kids. Oh, pop.
Len Freeman: Pretty nervy to shot thru a police statin window though
Godwinshelley2: Thank goodness!!
Rush: They leave Duuf on the floor…
Mike n Rachel in DC: Wait…wait…hold the can!
Godwinshelley2: And Charlie seems to get his letter mail delivered there and not home – since that one film with the kids going through his mail to get the report card
Mike n Rachel in DC: er…never mind…
Rush: Hold it, still….
Mike n Rachel in DC: Tell him that Charlie Chan Carries On…and …Eran Trece!
Rush: “Charlie Chan Carries On”
Len Freeman: CC is carrying on….
Rush: Mrs. Chan speaks…JAPANESE!
Rush: She will soon say, “Sayonara.”
hounder: an odd mistake for the directors to make
Mike n Rachel in DC: Sayonara? Did Charlie marry a Geisha or something?
Godwinshelley2: Even when Chan is not gone – still listen to your mother
Rush: Yes, Hounder.
Hawaii_Steve: Cute scene with the Chan kids.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Listen to your mother…even when she speaks the wrong Asian language
Rush: “Gracias…muchisima.”
Rush: “Maxito.”
Len Freeman: I note this in my course… at this time we didn’t really distinguish between asian peoples… so Sayonara was fine… and of course the first sound Charlie is Korean
Rush: (“Maxie”)
Cdirus: I was reading Death on the Nile by Christie – and they were interviewing the ships passengers in the smoking lounge too.
Godwinshelley2: Oh no – I signed up for the Murder Cruise by mistake!!
Rush: Yes, Len!
Rush: GS: π
Len Freeman: Only later when it gets important for WW II coming on reasons, we start to make a more clear distinction
Mike n Rachel in DC: OH…so it was more like *generic Asian language*
Godwinshelley2: Was the Mrs Chan actress Chinese or Japanese?
Hawaii_Steve: Actors playing Chan kids are not credited on IMDb. Rush, do you know about them?
hounder: ok that makes sense len
Rush: “Gracias……muchisima”
Mike n Rachel in DC: “Talk will not cook rice”
Len Freeman: tysm
Rush: Got the glove and gun.
Godwinshelley2: Would like the window-gun concession for this film
Rush: π
Rush: The Three Wise Monkeys clue.
Godwinshelley2: Tip they guy, Charlie!
Rush: “Hear nothin’, see nothin’, shut up”
Hawaii_Steve: The “gun through the widow” routine has been a number of times in Chan Films. I recall a scene featuring Keye Luke.
Rush: Yes, Steve.
Godwinshelley2: And the usual – set up a Chan shadow for the killer to shoot
Godwinshelley2: a notable spin on the window shooting
Rush: Itr sort of happens in “Charlie Chan’s Secret,” though from a hidden opening.
Rush: Steve, you were thinking of “Charlie Chan in Shanghai.”
Godwinshelley2: Finders Keepers
Hawaii_Steve: Oland and Luke are in a hotel room. Luke sees the hand/gun in the mirror. Am I remembering it correctly?
Rush: The mirror one was in “Secret.”
Godwinshelley2: So Rush do you add these sayings to the list
Rush: And..I am not sure to be honest about the “Shanghai” one having a mitrror…maybe yes.
Godwinshelley2: Ugh – not that one!!
Cdirus: What was the one where lee threw the tobacco jar at the gun?
Rush: Not these, although they are very close and often exact to those in thwe original movie.
Mike n Rachel in DC: That was in Panama, CD…I think
Rush: By the way…the Chan son we saw with Mrs. Chan was called “Henry” in “Charlie Chan Carries On.”
Cdirus: Ok
Mike n Rachel in DC: That’s when we found out that he was on the baseball team
Rush: Chan is feeling “down” here.
Rush: he is still in th dark as to the ID of the killer.
Rush: Time runs out…
Godwinshelley2: Weird hem on her shirt and dress – like dental molding on furniture
Rush: Chan often serves as a reconsiler of young lovers.
Godwinshelley2: It ‘s the only way they can bring romance into the film for Charlie, since he is a married man.
Rush: Chan gets an idea!
Godwinshelley2: Why would you dot your last name?
Rush: Sets a trap for the killer.
Godwinshelley2: Is that a Spanish thing – putting a period after a name
Rush: You mean, after it, GS?
Rush: Funny scene here.
Rush: The resulting misunderstanding will prove beneficial to both!
Rush: The ship’s horn.
Godwinshelley2: Whoops
Rush: π
Rush: ….
Len Freeman: dear dummy
Mike n Rachel in DC: *smooch*
Godwinshelley2: Those pencil eyebrows are a bit much for me
Rush: The style then.
Mike n Rachel in DC: Now. Where were we?
Rush: Timewise?
Len Freeman: I think they’re back in
Mike n Rachel in DC: Oh Lord. What a get-up
Godwinshelley2: 1:05
Rush: 105:20
Rush: The party scene.
Rush: Max has change his attitude.
Rush: A “regular guy” now!
Godwinshelley2: This part is a bit long for me
Godwinshelley2: Tough guys play the accordian – tell Weird Al!
Len Freeman: we call this
stretching…
Mike n Rachel in DC: Baba-loooo
Rush: Raul Roulien, a famous Brazillian performer of the day.
Rush: These scenes gave him the chance to “do his stuff.
“
Godwinshelley2: They were getting their money’s worth from his notoriety
hounder: odd looking instrument
Rush: Bottle with coins in it?
Mike n Rachel in DC: ANOTHER Danse Apache?
Rush: That was Brazillian, I believe.
Godwinshelley2: Ugh – again – not my favorite
Rush: And now…the dreaded “Dans Apache….”
Godwinshelley2: Even when I Love Lucy does it – I don’t like it
hounder: yuk. dans apache
Len Freeman: abuse abuse
Mike n Rachel in DC: Does anyone know where this thing came from? It seems like an odd entertainment
Rush: “Brutish Dance”
Godwinshelley2: France?
Godwinshelley2: They do it again in one of Chan’s French adventures
Mike n Rachel in DC: In “Paris”
Rush: How about when Popeye dances it with Bluto?
Rush: Chan plants the trap…
Rush: And soon he SETS it.
Godwinshelley2: A quick look at the internet says this about Apache Dancing: In early 20th century Paris, a dance was created to depict the perceived savagery of street gangs, prostitutes, and pimps.
Rush: Masterful move here.
Rush: Yes, GS.
Godwinshelley2: Look – tea bags!
Rush: CC looked for a reaction as he said the name.
